Box Elder (2008)
worth checking out if you like films like Harold and Kumar or Animal House or even Revenge of the Nerds.
This movie is a funny movie that told the tales of the lives of several students that went to a college, I think it's in Detroit, and it shows how they spent their years within the most hilarious of consequences.
Plot-wise, nothing much happens, but the eccentric people grow on you nevertheless, mostly because the acting is much better than what's in many debut indie features, and also because of the sweet-and-sour tang arising from the characters' rueful awareness of time passing.
The dialogue has a hit-or-miss improvisational feel, but somehow hits a nice sweet spot between studio comedy improv (think: Judd Apatow) and indie-film improv (think: Joe Swanberg) . And the characters are just great.
You've got stoic and handsome Nick Becker, who is alternately boosted and plagued by motormouth pal Rennie, lovelorn and self-destructive roommate Scott, and the cool but ultimately duplicitous Fletcher. Scott's girlfriend Laura adds spice to the mix in that she is both hot, and also a free spirit who unlike the other characters in this movie, knows when to move on.
Killer soundtrack too.
Freddy Got Fingered (2001)
Kind of genius, totally hilarious; The dumbest well-made movie of all time
Let me start by saying that I genuinely love this movie and think it's good. It's also completely retarded. But that's kind of the point.
I was one of the few people that actually saw this in theatres on opening weekend back in 2001. Looking back on it now, 15 years later, it still holds up, and almost gets better with each viewing.
People will scoff at this movie and describe it as infantile, moronic, unnecessary and offencive. And the truth is, it's all of these things, but that's partially what makes it so good. If you took any one scene or set piece out of this movie and put it into a different film, I would instantly hate that film for that very scene, but somehow in this movie, a collection of these hate-inducing scenes all work. And they don't induce hate, but rather, genuine laughter and joy.
This may be a brilliant work of art. It may be a total piece of Gonzo filmmaking shite. It may be in on it's own jokes. It may not be. Either way though, it makes me laugh like a 15 year old every time I watch it, and that is a priceless and rare feat.
Black Mass (2015)
Extraordinarily mediocre
There are a lot of great performances here but overall this movie is just so thoroughly mediocre that it's hard to justify watching it.
Deppis great. Bacon is great. Really everyone is, but it's just not that enjoyable to watch.
Sort've feels like if you took Goddfellas and took all the fun and style out of it. Not sure if that's a Boston thing, or a director thing, or a side effect of how movies are made today versus the way they were in the 90's, but overall, this felt a lot like a trip to the grocery store.
I think this movie had so much going for it but really didn't build any momentum at all. seemed more like a docu drama on TV?
performances were all great and on point. locations were good too, but yeah, for some reason this just didn't pull it together.
