The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)
The Donkey was the star
Terrible movie with miserable characters in a miserable environment, unable or unwilling to take action to improve their lives.
The history of Ireland does wrap around poverty, misery and oppression. However, an important counterpoint is that millions of vibrant and brave Irish men and woman had the courage to walk away and find new and bountiful lives in new lands, including America, Australia and Canada.
This utterly depressing movie is the story of those who were too timid, lazy or dim to leave. Instead, they double down and wallow in their small minded misery. I persevered to the end of the movie, walked out being thankful that the movie reminded me that nihilism is a useless and destructive philosophy. The donkey was superb!
Let Them All Talk (2020)
Terrible let down
The old adage "if you fail to plan, you plan to fail" should be modified for proceeding without a credible script and relying on actors making it up as they go: " if you have no script you'll end up in the skip". ( Australian slang for a dumpster). This was a slow boring film with unliveable charcters. Streep amped up her usual lethargy, Bergen looked directionless. Thank god for Wiest, she developed a character I could empathise with. The plot, if there was one, was boring, pointless, jerky and unbelievable. I wasted two precious hours.
A Christmas Tree Love Story (2020)
Disappointing and poor cinematography
The story had promise but was let done by inexperienced acting, terrible cinematography and editing.
The First (2018)
STULTIFYING, PLODDING AND DULL
What a disappointing series, dull and slow paced. Too much time was wasted on banal interpersonal dramas and the selfish, immature behaviour of Sean Penn's snowflake daughter. I get it, astronauts have personal lives that can intrude on their professional lives. But seriously, would the director of such an important space mission tolerate that level of disfunction impinging on its success and the safety of the crew? Of course not.
Pine Gap (2018)
Amateurish rubbish
Badly written with utterly predictable anti US slant from stereotypical sneering, swearing anti establishment Aussie characters with zero depth. Nice scenery shots the only redeeming feature.
