Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story (2000)
This film should have never been made
I wouldn't have minded that much that Mr. Sullivan invented a completely new plot that has nothing to do with the books if this was a fine film. But it's not. It's full of plot holes, the pacing is uneven and the whole story is just unbelievable and on several occasions just plain ridiculous. It has no charm, no real substance, and the only scenes worth watching are Anne and Gilbert's wedding and their reunion in the end. It tries to be a spy movie, a war movie and a sequel of two films that are of completely different genre. Of course it fails. It's like Coppola decided to do another Godfather film but this time made it a light family musical comedy. An absurd idea that should have never been realized.
If you haven't seen this, do yourself a favour and stick to the first two films/series and do not waste your time watching this atrocity.
Toc Toc (2017)
Funny film that treats its characters with respect
Lovely and funny film, with interesting characters, and although the OCDs that they have serve as a generator of funny moments, they are not ridiculed. Instead, we get to see how each character struggles with every day life and how their private and professional life also takes heavy blows or does not exist because of a disorder they have. It really made me think more about how difficult it is to live when you have to face such challenges each day. The plot is simple yet engaging, actors are convincing - their acting may be a bit exaggerated at some points but not in an annoying way. I would definitely recommend this film for watching - it's funny, witty, and treats its characters with understanding and warmth, not mockery.
Cocaine Cowboys (2006)
Great subject, horrible directing/storytelling
The subject of the documentary is shocking and definitely worth watching - however, that's the only good thing about this film. If I could give it 0 stars, I would - these 2 stars are for the subject only. It's a directing disaster, too fast, too frantic with the cheesiest possible music that goes on and on, making it hard to take what people say seriously. I mean, someone talks about murders, we have footage of dead people massacred with guns and all is accompanied with the sleaziest 80s TV Sales music.. After super fast parts of the film, we have some people talking about one event for ages, and since that event is nothing exceptional compared to the others mentioned one has to wonder why the director suddenly decided to waste so many minutes on that particular part of the story. I couldn't understand who half the people talking in the film actually were. There is no clear story telling, it's confusing, frantic and very, very, badly done, Which is a shame - if someone more skilled (and by that I mean: anybody else than Billy Corben) would decide to tell this incredible story, the result could be an excellent documentary. There is plenty to tell and having these guys that were part of the criminal milieu ready to talk to camera so openly is a winning combination. Unfortunately, Mr.. Corben was just not up to the task. I hope that one day there would be a better documentary covering this subject.
Killing Eve (2018)
Excellent beginning but very disappointing development and ending
Why, oh why is it so hard to make an intelligent show that has plausible plot and believable characters? I must admit that the first three episodes really were fine and got me intrigued but the rest of the show just kept going sillier and sillier.
Psychological thriller of cat-and-mouse game where the investigator becomes more and more obsessed with the main villain sounds promising as there are so many possibilities for mind-twisting moments and unexpected turns but this show fails in that regard. And not just that. The character's behaviour is illogical and inconsistent. Eve loves her husband and is devastated by the death of her colleague and friend Bill but then forgets them both and develops almost childlike infatuation with Villanelle/Oxana, with no internal drama or doubt or being thorn-apart by the attraction. She acts on impulse and makes progress only because she is conveniently "saved" by the IT savvy kid Kenny who finds all the right information she needs EVERY SINGLE TIME.
Carolyn, her boss, assembles the investigating team on her own because she wants to find and pursue Villanelle, then practically sabotages the investigation in Russia, working behind everyone's back. I mean, why bother with it in the first place? No one was looking for Villanelle and due to Frank's involvement with the underground the case was dismissed. Carolyn didn't start the investigation because she had to do due to her job description, i.e. something that would be expected of her, as her duty as an MI5 high ranking officer - she basically hired them unofficially then ditched them.
Then we have the mysterious 12 organization that is supposed to be pulling all the strings but for which in the season's finale there's not further explanation nor importance given. Suddenly it's just about some cheap lesbian attraction between Eve and Villanelle.
Furthermore Villanelle's (s)kills - each time her killing goes all perfectly well it's almost laughable - no one interrupts her in the lady's toilet where she poisons the perfume entrepreneur, no one from security notices her at the mafia boss estate, no one pursues her after killing the prison guards, she's accepted as a replacement in a "hot hospital" in Berlin with no questions asked etc... And what about the ridiculousness of the episode where Villanelle is teamed up with other two assassins who look more like three amateurs who saw too many B-movies and decided to reprise them in real life than being three professional ruthless killers. And why would she all of a sudden develop attraction for Eve, out of simply watching her trying new clothes in the shop or seeing her doing her hair in a toilet?
What started as a promising and interesting series went downhill to being an absurd, silly and pointless show. It went from the intriguing movie - Seven - start to the absurdity of 90s Twin - Peaks - series ending. Too bad, I was really hoping for a rewarding TV viewing experience. So don't get fooled by the high rating and use your time watching some other show that is less absurd and less insulting to the common sense.
