Shôgun (2024)
Cosmo is no Tom Hardy.
Kurosawa directed a masterpiece in 1957, Seven Samurai. This is something I've went back to many times, sadly I don't think Shogun warrants repeated plays.
By no means is this a poor show, it certainly doesn't warrant some of the criticism, this is a good show; a good show not a great one.
The casting is exceptional and the acting really very good, the story itself is also very good, the pace, atmosphere, cinematography all really very good.
I think the thing for me that knocks this from a solid 9 to a 7, is the character played by Cosmo Jarvis.
It's like he's sat down and watched the excellent TV series, Taboo, and tried to emulate some of the characteristics that Tom Hardy displayed playing the character James Delaney.
I'm sure had I not seen Taboo, this may have went completely over my head, however I have and this just seems like a less convincing version of a character.
That said, it is a good show and I'm sure I'll be there if and when they do a second series.
The Gentlemen (2024)
I'm in a minority here but....
I can't help feel that this was written simply to get a second series and keep milking this Mockney Gangsta thing the creator seems to love.
Saying the word "fam" or "innit" and playing Drill music doesn't make you from the ends.
I thought it started off well, but then it just seemed to drag on a bit, it could certainly be trimmed a few episodes to keep the pace.
There's some good actors too, I thought the characters of Eddie and Susie very well played.
If I want to see Ray Winstone play a proper tasty "geezer", I'd watch Sexy Beast
The characters of Freddie and Jimmy thought were just so unlikable, to make the show seem almost unwatchable.
I liked the movie- The Gentlemen, but for me this didn't translate well into a series.
I've nothing against Guy Ritchie movies, but If I want to watch a gangster movie, I'll have Donnie Brasco or if I want it to be UK based, even Gangs of London, which flowed much better.
Bandidos (2024)
Unwatchable
I've no idea who these people are marking this show a ten, I find nothing in this show to even make it average.
I know people have different tastes, but really a ten for something that's probably best suited for children aged around 10.
The acting is plastic, the script is formulated and pathetic, there is nothing here that's worth anyone's time. I've seen better TV commercials than this show.
I got through episode one, it took me three attempts to sit through episode two, I gave up eventually.... I did try, but I found it too excruciating to watch.
The characters are just unlikable, the dialog is something from a badly produced school play.
Move along, nothing to see here...
Damsel (2024)
Scream if you wanna go faster
So you're married into a self serving family of Tories (republicans if you're a yank), you can tell they are because they don't care about anyone but themselves.
You're then thrown into a pit of misery, full of despair and no hope (pretty much what the conservatives have turned the UK into),
You find there's a fire breathing dragon who's trying to turn you into coal.
What's the best course of action if you find yourself in that spot?
Well according to this movie, you'll do nothing but scream, groan, shout, whisper, talk, scream and then scream some more.
Not quite as catchy as dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge.
Tedious best describes this movie.
Main actress was ok, Ray Winstone was as stick as the rocks in the cave.
Yawnorama!
Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024)
I hardly recognize Jimmy Nail as the Avatar
The last air spender is a TV show series that is set in Newcastle upon Tyne and focuses on the life and exploits of Detective Sergeant Freddie AirSpender, who was often chosen to carry out more daring police cases. With his criminal sidekick Stick (Sammy Johnson),
This must be a reboot of the original story, for one Jimmy has a massive 'go fast' stripe tattooed on his head, and when he gets angry he gets 'the look', similar I would imagine to having a roid rage.
Places like Benwell, Howdon, Wallsend, Byker is made to look fantastic, the CGI team have done a great job as for decades local councils have turned these places into toilets.
Even Sammy looks younger, he wears a load of white dominos around his neck and has a nose you could do a base jump from.
All in all, this is an enjoyable romp amongst the villains of Tyneside and the wider area, while being chased by a guy who's got hot hands.
I don't normally watch shows like this, but it's cold outside and I have nothing else to watch... oh wait, I should watch Shogun, I hear good things about it.
One Piece (2023)
Enjoyable but
There's two actors that are so terrible and wooden, I'm amazed they get cast for anything.
Firstly Kobe- bargain store Harry Potter, always sniveling and apologetic and scared of his own shadow, terrible character.
Secondly,Monkey D. Luffy, his "WOHOOOOOOS" and punching the air get old real quick.
These two really lowered the tone for me, the performance of these actors somehow walk the line between wooden and ham acting.
Other than that, the rest of the show was great, some of the other characters are really likable although I did feel the last few episodes of the series dragged on a bit.
I'll still give season 2 a go when that comes out, as I suspect there'll be more sinister villains.
Mammals (2022)
Solid bit of dark comedy
I'm stunned that this show gets an overall poor rating, my wife and I just binged the whole series.
This is a story about infidelity, double standards and a few other subplots that I won't go into as I'd not want to ruin it for others suffice to say that seeing references to a French designers is a bit surreal, as was seeing a particular famous Welsh vocalist in the opening episode.
There is a reason people have unfairly marked it low, well in most cases, and that's due to a general dislike of James Corden and I guess the story of his behavior people see in the media doesn't do him any favours.
I'm no fan of him myself but credit where it's due, it's a good and entertaining show where an episode finishes and you want to watch the next immediately.
The ending of the last episode had us waiting on for a series 2....please let there be another series.
