Loop Track (2023)
A Wonderful Surprise
If you're looking for a big budget horror movie with crazy plot twists, this movie will not be your cup of tea. However, if you want to watch an intriguing suspense, watch Loop Track.
The movie does well with what it has to work with. The actor who plays the main character does a phenomenal job of someone with social anxiety - someone who goes out of their way to NOT interact or pass others by.
The creature reveal is a lot of fun, as again, this is not a big budget film, so they needed to be a bit creative.
Lower your expectations and watch the film blind like I did. It won't be on your top ten list, but it is captivating nonetheless.
Absolutely India: Mancs in Mumbai (2020)
Ryan Thomas is Wonderful
I loved this series. Ryan Thomas' laugh is contagious and he lights up the screen in each scene he's in. His brothers add to the fun, and the short reunion with their father (and other surprise family members) are sweet.
If you've never been to Mumbai before, you'll enjoy the scenery. It's a very colorful show, and there are festivities that make each episode fun and educational.
I understand a season two isn't likely to happen and that's disappointing. It's only 6 episodes, not very long, and quick to get through.
I know the Thomas brothers have a podcast and it's worth listening to, as you'll become quite fond of them after finishing the series.
Well done, boys.
Don't Look Away (2023)
One Actor's Performance Ruins Each Scene He's In
There is an actor in the film named Abu Dukuly who should not quit his day job. The acting from most of the main cast is fine, but this guy's acting is soooooo bad, it takes away from the performance of everyone else in each scene he's in. His lines are rushed through and without emotion. When he does show emotion, it's cringe-worthy.
This bad acting from one person aside, there are some creative scenes in the film, but they all happen within the first 20 minutes or so. The visuals of the mannequin are pretty great, as it can look frightening with the right lighting and shadows.
The story isn't terribly strong, and no one shows a lot of remorse for the murders that are happening. Friends are brutally killed several feet away from certain characters, and the emotion and reaction from them is almost not existent. I had a hard time liking any character as a result.

Lower Your Expectations Going In
This movie is a perfect example of why you shouldn't watch a movie with expectations based on reviews and feedback. Perhaps I would have enjoyed the film without any expectations at all.
I have a feeling a lot of people are saying great things about this movie because everyone else is doing so. It's not a bad film, but it's certainly nothing groundbreaking. It can be confusing at times - not just because of the nonlinear storytelling, but because of the lack of explanations.
People are saying it's the scariest film they've seen this year. I would dispute that, but form your opinion. Just don't be like me and watch it expecting to be scared.
The Third Saturday in October Part V (2022)
The Poster is Cool. That's All the Praise I Can Give.
Contrast the reviews for this film against the "first" film, and you'll raise your eyebrows. Just saying.
The poster for the film is great. That is the only positive contribution I have to make. There's no homage here. There's no tribute to slasher flicks...its one nonsensical kill after another.
The mask is not interesting in the least. All of the mystery about the killer is nullified in the first 20 minutes. None of the characters are likeable.
I have no idea how the filmmakers got any funding for this enormous waste of time. If you're on the fence about watching The Third Saturday in October, hopefully this review helped you make a decision.

STAY FOR THE POST-CREDIT SCENE
A great found footage movie. The post-credit scene adds context to an already dark scenario. It is a slow burn, and the characters are not likeable at all, but if you're a horror fan, you know what that means. I had low expectations going in so I was pleasantly surprised. You're going to want to let this ending sit with you for a while. After you do, you'll realize the true horror of it all.
Red Woods (2021)
If You're Into Found Footage, This is a Lot of Fun
I watched the movie with low expectations based on the reviews here. That's how you should watch it, too, you'll appreciate it more. While the story is predictable, it is a lot of fun. The antagonist is about as scary as a dandelion, but that aside, I get what the filmmakers were trying to do here. If you're into found footage films, it's worth watching. Those leaving negative reviews are expecting this film to be something it's not.

You Know They're Spoofing and It's Great
This is an underrated film, but I don't want to overhype it. The less you know about it, the better. Don't watch the trailer or read reviews. Watch it blind. You'll thank me by the movie's end.
Terrifier (2016)
A Great Surprise for Horror Lovers
Terrifier is not what I expected...in a great way! Takes a lot to scare me, but there's one image in particular that I'll never forget - you'll know it when you see it. Several scenes surprised and tricked me. The 80s synth score was pretty great too.
Black Butterfly (2017)
Brilliant
A fun little story that will impress you. If you think you can figure out where the movie is headed based on the trailer, you're wrong. Don't read up on it, just watch it. You'll be glad you did.
I'm purposely not mentioning specifics because the less you know about the film, the better.
The Invitation (2015)
Go in Blind - Don't Watch the Trailer or Read the Reviews
This film was a pleasant surprise. The only thing I knew about this movie was the buzz about it. There has been some talk of it being slow, but I disagree. I think the pacing is what builds up to....well, you'll see. And just when you think you know how it ends, you get a punch in the stomach with the final scene.
Anyone who is crapping on this movie just didn't "get it". Logan Marshall-Green was tremendous in portraying both his grief and his paranoia. The coyote sequence at the beginning of the film is a harbinger of things to come, and oh-so-symbolic. A truly wonderful film. I tip my hat to everyone involved in making this gem of a movie.
Blair Witch (2016)
SPOILERS: Why "Blair Witch" is a Fun Follow-Up to the "Blair Witch Project"
Blair Witch got crapped on by a lot of people, but I don't think anyone "got it".
Blair Witch doesn't follow the pattern of a Hollywood movie format - it's really a series of "found footage" scenes, so there's no music to warn you about a pending scare, no structured dialog, etc. So right away people are going to hate it because it breaks the status quo of filmmaking.
The biggest complaint about the Blair Witch Project is that the camera was too shaky, and this movie, if anything, has MORE shaky cam, but I think that's kind of the point of a "found footage" film. I didn't have an opinion once the movie ended because I was still processing everything, but as I thought about it, I actually thought it was well crafted, and everything a BW sequel should be. I will say it's a complete rehash of the original, but that's not a bad thing. The changes are improvements. Instead of 3 people, you have 6. Instead of video cameras and paper maps, you have camera drones and GPS. You hear stories verbally told at the beginning that pay off towards the end. Then there were explanations of things in this film that were left unanswered from the original, which was also a good idea. The reason no one can find people who go missing in the woods is because it's a Bermuda Triangle kind of thing - the forest is a time-loop. So it's not "where" is everyone, but "when". They find a way to connect this film to the original (the main character is the little brother one of the characters from the original).
One of the reasons I like the original so much is because you don't SEE what you're scared of. This is why I (and all fans of the Blair Witch Project) pretend that "Book of Shadows" NEVER HAPPENED. I think that movie tainted what could have been a successful horror franchise, kind of like how no one wanted to make a Batman movie after what Joel Schumacher. But time heals all wounds and 17 years later we got a sequel to the original, and it worked, because the filmmakers didn't try to reinvent the wheel, they just improved on an already successful formula.
There is a scene in this movie where you "see" the witch in a mirror reflection, but it doesn't ruin the movie - actually it's a very scary moment because someone is being chased in an abandoned house in the middle of a forest by a something they can't see. There is also the addition of another isolated character that is suggestive of the Slender Man mythos online.
The only thing that I would say is a major change is that this movie confirms that a supernatural presence is involved. In the first one, since you don't see the witch, you really don't know if whatever is tormenting the campers is a human messing with them, or an actual ghostly witch. That question is never answered in the original, which makes it all the more scary. In this movie, without question, it's a ghostly witch. They even elaborate on the Blair Witch stick figures that hang from the trees in the original. In this movie, they explain that those stick figures are actually voodoo dolls of the victims. One girl finds the sticks tied together with strands of her own hair, and when someone snaps that particular stick figure in two, the girl's body also snaps in half.
The biggest improvement on the movie is the abandoned house in the middle of the woods, though. In the original, that house is where the ending of the movie takes place, and we only get to see it for a couple of minutes. In this version, we get more time in the house. You see a lot of things on the walls that were referenced in stories/warnings at the beginning of the movie(s). As part of the story, characters stand in a corner of a room with their backs to everyone, and you know it's because you're not supposed to look at the witch - anyone who has ever seen her has died immediately. So in this movie, they have the sense to keep their backs to the witch and walk backward using their video cameras to see where they're going. But then you also learn that the witch can trick you into turning around (using voices familiar to the characters). This is big, story-line wise, as it explains where the voices heard in the forest came from.
I wanted to take a minute to explain why this WASN'T a bad a movie, and acknowledge what these filmmakers created here, which is 90 minutes of fun, especially if you're a horror fan.
