Max Payne (2008)
Slow moving & dull
This is one of the few movies I have ever dozed off to. I am a big fan of action movies and I was supremely disappointed in this slow moving (no action til about 1/2 way through the movie) and Olga Kurylenko was one of the few bright spots an otherwise dull movie. The sets and atmosphere were good but fight against the bad guy was a let down with the ending utterly predictable. The action was standard and nothing better than a recent Steven Seagal movie. The trailers made the movie out to be more than it was and I am a person who turned the channel to avoid seeing the trailers for fear of getting the whole plot before seeing the movie. I was hyped up to see this movie and feel like I was robbed. Save your money and see one of the other action movies to come out lately. You won't be disappointed with Eagle Eye or Body of Lies.
The Andromeda Strain (2008)
See the original and skip it
I was really hopeful when I heard they did a remake of this as the original is one of my all time favorite sci-fi movies. The original movie had a great cast and created great suspense. This movie fell flat.
Warning Spoiler Alert:
The beginning was OK and it looked like it would be a good movie, however about 1/3 or the way through the movie I noticed that they started changing things and trying to add a government conspiracy and some worm-hole time-travel crap to the virus and it became absolutely stupid. The acting was average at best and it looks like they spent all their money making neat special effects that didn't add to the movie much. You really couldn't care less about any of the scientists and none of them looked particularly knowledgeable. The original while certain parts of the special effects weren't superb, managed to create much more suspense without creating some sneaky government agency that was just plain DUMB. Let's not forget about the environmental terrorists taking over some vent mining operation that had little or nothing to do with the main story. As usual they turned it into a Government vs People statement with a little Save the Planet crap thrown in there. In the end, 5 out of 10 seems remarkably high for a movie that stole 4 hours of my life... but I was mildly amused.
Casino Royale (2006)
Daniel Craig IS Bond! (Spoiler only if you think omitting something is spoiling it)
A fantastic movie with Bond reborn! While you won't and the silly gadgets that slowly made bond into Inspector Gadget. No Politically Correct junk that made him into a wuss. This is cutting edge Bond that relies on his intellect and his myriad abilities. This is the Bond for the New Millennium! I think this is the BEST Bond and Daniel Craig, whom I doubted could pull it off, made himself into a believable James Bond. Bravo!!! Eva Green was superb and a perfect counterpart as Vesper Lynd. She was intelligent, and while not as glamorous as some of the previous Bond girls (in my opinion) she more than made up for it with her great lines and cutting remarks to Bond. She's probably a Bond girl that can appeal to everyone! Now, alas, the tough part... waiting for the next Bond film!
Project Grizzly (1996)
Genius, albeit combined with strangeness
The movie was funny and brilliant. Here's your everyman trying to make something different and following a dream. The funny thing isn't that he tried to design the suit for Grizzly bears but that after the film he actually redirected his thinking towards a suit designed to protect firefighters. While doing this and discovering his suit wasn't safe unless it was fireproof, he managed to create a compound that MIT professors said couldn't be made. He created a ceramic? compound that he demonstrated in his own unique way. He placed a small brick of it on top of a helmet and had a braizing torch directed on the top of it for 10 minutes (at 5000 degrees). After 10 minutes the temperate had risen barely 10 degrees. A crackpot? no doubt :) But likely a backyard genius too. See it once and remember that not all inventions in history were used in the original purpose that the creator envisioned.
