8-Bit Christmas (2021)
Fun, but not a fan of the ending
This movie sure looked like it was going to be a slam dunk. I was about 11 or 12 at the time of the Nintendo boom and remember how crazy everything was for awhile. I was excited to relive some of that through this film and it didn't disappoint....for the most part. The plot was great and the adventure was there along the way, so why end on such a heartbreaking note? I get it, the holidays are special because of who you spend them with and not what gifts you get. The ending of this movie totally soured the fun and left our family in tears. Not the fun-loving holiday movie night we were hoping for.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023)
Got what I expected
Look...it's a transformers movie. A completely unrealistic story with tons of impossibilities. That's why I watch stuff like this. I like to escape from the normal drama that is in real life and enjoy some comic book/cartoonish fantasy adventure. Is it gonna win an Oscar,? Nope. Was I entertained? Sure. It's worth watching if you enjoy this genre of movies. I feel like it basically follows the same type of plot as seen in the Avengers and Justice League. It was pretty predictable and the acting/CGI was as expected. I appreciated the comedy sprinkled throughout the movie. Nice little surprise at the end too!
A Christmas Story Christmas (2022)
Pretty good movie
It would be impossible to live up to the classic, but this movie holds its own. It was nice to see so much of the original cast return and find out where they ended up as adults. The biggest thing missing from the movie was the "Old Man" and the movie does it's best to honor him. The movie does revisit some of the iconic scenes from the original in the form of flashbacks to help jog your memory if you haven't watched it in awhile. It is still an enjoyable movie to watch if you haven't seen the first one. I don't know if we will watch this every year like the original, but it's definitely worth adding to the Christmas movie rotation.
Dexter: New Blood (2021)
The only way to end this journey
I've been a fan of Dexter for years and like everyone else, I hated the original series finale. This new series was just what I needed to feel like there is a conclusion to Dexter's journey. The villain in this series is one of the best since Trinity. Whether there is another season or not, Dex went out the only way he should have. Thank you so much to everyone who brought this character back!
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Marvel + Sony = Happiness
Not only was this movie amazing in every way (funny, emotional, suspenseful, action-packed), but the ability to do a movie about a multi-verse and pull it off using previous actors and characters is something most people could only dream of. I really hope to see more expansion into the Spider-verse because it is seemingly endless on possibilities. I'm so glad I got to see this movie in the theater with my son!
The Family (2013)
Decent movie, poor ending
The movie was pretty good. Not a typical mob movie, but it checked a lot of boxes. Little bits of humor here and there helped out. I was pretty unsatisfied with how quickly the movie wrapped up. DeNiro makes this movie worth watching.
Unbelievable (2019)
Starts strong, Fizzles out
This had a great premise, but I feel like the plot shifted and it was all downhill from there. It's still a pretty good show and worth watching.
The Last Dance (2020)
Amazing!
As a Pacers fan, I HATED Jordan and the Bulls because they were always the team to beat. Watching this as an adult gave me a different perspective and I have to respect Michael Jordan for his leadership and talent. I wish there were 10 more episodes to watch!
Jumanji: The Next Level (2019)
Bad language
Decent movie, but the cursing was a little excessive. I understand it's PG-13, but it was just unnecessary.
Trolls World Tour (2020)
Not as good as the original
Kiddos were amped up about seeing this at the theater, but we all know how that ended. Paying $20 at home was a little excessive, buy it kept them entertained for 90 minutes. My 5 year old didn't care for the "bad guy" and felt it was a little too dark at times. The songs were okay, but nothing as catchy as the first movie. Oh well, not every sequel can be Frozen 2.
Moana (2016)
One of the best
I consider myself a Moana expert because I have watched this movie with my daughter a thousand times AND we listen to the soundtrack every day TO and FROM school. Such a fun story and very empowering to little kids who want to "listen to the voice inside" and follow their dreams. The only reason I gave this a 9 instead of a 10 is because the lava monster scene can be a little scary for young children. My daughter's favorite line, "Really?....blow dart my cheek? (thud)"
Joker (2019)
Wow
Started off a little slow, but it was all important for the development of the Joker. Loved this movie and Phoenix has definitely earned all of the praise. The "statement" of this movie is loud and clear and I think it needs to be heard by as many people as possible.
The Lion King (2019)
Ignore the poor reviews
I made the mistake of reading the reviews and went into this thinking it would be terrible. My whole family enjoyed it and thought it was a great parallel to he animated movie. Nothing could live up to the animated classic, but this was a fun movie.
Rim of the World (2019)
TV-14 is a stretch
Felt like I was watching a Nickelodeon movie that tried too hard to be cool. Language was over the top and the sexual references were pointless. Parents be warned this really isn't a great movie for kids/early teens.
Venom (2018)
Bring on Spidey
This was a really good movie and hopefully Spider-Man will get his shot against Venom in the future. The possibilities are endless....especially if Carnage comes into the picture.
IO (2019)
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME
Terrible plot, story, and acting. Watch Wall-E instead. Same premise, but with much better content.
Bird Box (2018)
Pretty good movie
It's kind of a mixture of LOST and The Walking Dead. I didn't get the sense that there was some big political message or anything like that. It was just a tripped out science fiction story and I liked it.
Rampage (2018)
Enjoyed the action
As a fan of the video game, I wasn't sure what to expect. This was a decent action movie with a lot of destruction. I smell a sequel....
Incredibles 2 (2018)
Great movie...questionable language and scenes
Loved the movie. Usage of "damn" and "hell" in a Pixar movie was unnecessary. The "burglary" scene where the homeowner was shot and killed was also out of character for a family movie.
