The Death Factory Bloodletting (2008)
Better than a B movie and different
Other reviews make out this is a very poor movie. It is actually not bad at all, especially for late night viewing. From the outset people are trapped in a confined place with something bad living there. The acting is OK and the setting did not need a billion dollars spent on it to get the ambiance right. The only downside is the gore moments are not clearly seen which saves on special effects costs i guess (just use your imagination instead). The best thing about the movie is you never really know whats going to happen next which is a refreshing change from many films today. Kind of like watching the original zombie movies way back in time where you had no way of knowing what the weird thing is capable of next. There are some twists along the way too.
Collateral Damage (2002)
this movie has quality
I hope folks get a chance to read this before not watching the movie due to poor reviews elsewhere.
OK, lets get one thing straight, I AM the MOST analytical film critic on Earth. If anything is far fetched, unbearable or downright beyond belief then I am the first to see it and say it ! I was astonished how little (if any) 'beyond plausible' moments there were. In fact I haven't seen a more feasible action movie in a long time. Many action movies are beyond cartoon level of ridiculous.
IE 'Commando' had excruciating moments of 'cant happen' action like 20 militia shooting machine guns at Arnie from 30 feet without hitting him once NOW THATS UNBEARABLE TRASH ! This movie never went beyond reality, sure there were many explosions and gun fights but the director seemed to be trying hard to keep a reality level of good guy/bad guy action throughout.
The scenes went from the bustling city center to the dense quiet of jungle keeping good visual variety.
The acting was all decent and even at my critical best I did not have any problems with it. No actor tried too hard (making it hammy) yet they all tried hard enough (making it quality).
The camera work was smooth and stylish enough to keep the film flowing without much distraction.
The storyline had a nice touch to it near the end that put icing on an already decent cake.
To summarise - good acting, camera work, directing, storyline, scenery and good vs evil emotion made this an enjoyable movie.
Not Aliens or Shawshank Redemption level but has quality all the same.
Death Wish 3 (1985)
I never saw a film more staged
Im shocked - on many levels.
Im shocked that Michael Winner is so well renowned as a director after just witnessing such an amateur, patchy and staged film.
Im shocked that other comments praise this film as "a classic" - did I watch a different film ?
In a nutshell it was extremely STAGED with each and every situation queued in one by one like a cheap school drama.
Six billion bullets came Bronson's way and only 2 connected which were nicely lined up on his bullet proof vest. He ran down an alley right into the path of 2 villains that emptied their guns at him from a range of 10 feet and not one bullet connected.
Bronson shoots each villain like lame ducks at a rifle range as they all just stay put until he drops them.
I watched it to the end because we all like to see scum get wasted but the STAGING of each event was hard to bear.
You will know what an amateur and staged film it is by the way the end draws to a lame close.
Breakdown (1997)
Excellent mystery and suspense film
The story line is perfect for mystery and suspense being set in the remoteness of an interstate location. I am very analytical about film directing and always looking to pick fault with films for either continuity or plausibility. This film is very good in both areas seeing as I hardly ever got drawn into any criticism although Kurt's shooting expertise is perhaps zero.
I really enjoyed the film from start to finish as it had portions of suspense, mystery and challenge throughout. I have rarely made comments on this website but having just watched the film (feb 2009) it was good enough to make me comment.
In fact it was so well written and cast that I did a rare moment of getting passionately involved by yelling at Kurt to kick ass.
