Amour, destin et rock 'n' roll (2008)
worst movie of the year
I was intrigued by this film because I love small indie films. I was shocked at how bad this movie is. I can't believe they were able to release it theatrically. I don't know where to start to tell you why it is so bad, but let me give you some highlights: first of all, why would the main female character, Carol, instantly fall in love for a guy who has zero charm? Well, the character she falls for, Paul, is played by Dario Gasbarro, who happens to be the writer/director, so I guess he has a very esteem of himself. The kissing scenes are absolutely unbearable to watch. The poor actress must have been in dire need of a part to accept kissing such an unsexy man. Then what follows is a series of dreadful scenes that make the film seem like it's 3 hours long, although the running time is approximately 80 minutes. The whole thing is unnecessarily too dramatic, and the characters are underdeveloped. The script is very conventional, with absolutely no depth, and feels like it was written 50 years ago. I mean, Paul invites the girl over to his place for dinner, and she does the cooking! Also, in the movie, Paul is a rock'n'roll singer. There is nothing wrong with that, but his two female bandmates have a Gothic look! And don't get me started on the amateur acting. Gasbarro must have cast his friends and family. Enough said. This is by far the worst movie of the year.
Échangistes (2007)
A true to life story about modern couples
That movie was quite intriguing. Although the title suggests that swinging is the main topic of the film, it is mostly a reflexion about infidelity. The story follows three very different couples who try swinging to fill a void in their life. That movie was shot with a shoestring budget, so purists might say that the film has low production values, uneven acting, and static camera work. But once you get past that, you embark in the story because whether you are single, have been married for 10 years, or casually dating, there will probably be something you can relate to in this film. It is actually very true to life, and that bothers viewers who are looking for Hollywood stories, or simply an escape from the daily grind. When I saw it at the movie theater with a group of friends, reactions were mixed. People who like independent films were disappointed of the lack of artistic pretension, and those who like big budget flicks are not used to "little films" like this one. But those who like a well written realistic story with characters using everyday language enjoyed that film, me included.
