Fishing with Dynamite (2019)
Insightful story
What an insightful documentary. Not only was it informative and concise, Fishing with Dynamite explored business ethics and how it can succeed in a capitalist world filled with conservatives and liberals alike. Further, it's not complicated. This could be understood by teenagers and was a good introduction into business practices. I will say the cinematography wasn't amazing or inventive but for what this was it's not a big deal.
Love Goes Public (2019)
Terrific story!
This was a nice short documentary exploring a 'forgotten piece' of America, the Alabama black belt. Poor families struggle to survive and their kids struggle in a pretty fallen school system. But miraculously the Lord blessed two high schools in the area with Brelinda Sullen who gives her time, money, and love to students who just need some support. We can see her impact on them and I applaud her and the filmmaking team for bringing this story to light.
Phoenix, Oregon (2019)
Heartwarming, indie movie
Phoenix, Oregon is a terrific independent film. I loved the performances by James Le Gros and Jesse Borrego, the writing, and the heart that this film has. I do think the production design was a little weak but it didn't hurt the story. The film is really strengthened by its uniqueness. Other films do focus on common folk in small towns (e.g. the Brinson family in Wildlife) but what director/writer Gary Lundgren does so well is that he makes the audience care about Bobby, the main character. He writes and directs the actor well; Le Gros depicts a middle-aged American really well. I do recommend checking this film out.
Flint Town (2018)
An Enjoyable Show
Flint Town is a well-crafted, daring look into the City of Flint in Michigan. It is similar to Shot in the Dark and keeps its distance from terrible, reality shows like those border patrol shows. I feel connected to the police officers they follow and even their personal lives are shown to some extent. I do recommend you take a look. It's not the best TV show ever but it is good.
Designated Survivor (2016)
A good political thriller
This is one of my favourite shows at the moment. While many are ticked off by the aesthetics or the acting I want to lift up the good aspects of DS in my opinion. First, the writing is good. Sutherland's performance is well acted and his encounters with various leaders show him to be very firm and independent despite the role he plays as minor HUD Secretary. Second, it is fairly tense but less so than 24. This takes a scenic route to finding the bad guys. There are subplots which are fine too. I like the performances and the chemistry formed between Emily and Aaron. I can't seem to think of downfalls except for the fact that we simply lost the daughter after episode 4 without explanation and do they normally talk about secret conspiracies in the halls of the White House? Good set design is also a positive factor with the CGI being more than adequate for a show airing on CBS and Netflix. Lastly, it keeps up-to-date with Brussels, Paris and the PM being called "Madam" over the phone.
