A Good Movie If You Wait Awhile
26 September 2023
I watched the film many years ago and saw it again of Turner Classic Movies. "Custer Of The West" is a movie that is OK and then becomes terrific in the last 20 minutes. It has a pretty accurate Last Stand and is one of the few movies of that last stand that has Comanche as the lone survivor of that day in June, 1876. The performances were good and Robert Shaw's portrayal is second only to Errol Flynn in "They Died With Their Boots On". One historical note, the horse shown as the lone survivor was white while Comanche was reddish brown. I am giving the film eight stars plus one more for Comanche.

Gunsmoke: Jesse (1973)
Season 18, Episode 22
10/10
One of the best episodes of Gunsmoke ever made.
24 May 2023
My review title says it all. Once in a great while there is a television series that airs an episode that gives a valid reason for it being on the air. This was one of those episodes. The 1973 episode "Jesse" had a realistic story and Brock Peters and Ken Curtis gave one of their best performances. I will never understand why they were not nominated for Emmys that year. (Curtis for Best Supporting Actor and Peters for best Guest Actor) Sometimes the Emmy voters just get it wrong. If I know it's going to be aired on either Me-TV or TV Land I make it a point to watch. It is a true western classic.

Beyond Our Control (1968–1986)

Let There Be A DVD!!
21 September 2022
In November, 1974, I discovered "Beyond Our Control". No other tv show was like it until the first episode of SNL in October of 1975. It was like the SNL cast had gone to an Indiana high school. I watched it from Wabash County, Indiana, where we could pick up both South Bend and Fort Wayne stations. It was "Must See TV" (to use a later phrase) and I never missed it. I watched it until life and college arrived to change my viewing plans. There were the skits and the one liners that I still use today. "How bad was it? Have you ever seen a dog get up and change the channel? " I didn't like the song they played at the end of the show. I skipped that part because it sounded too heartbreaking. I can only hope there is enough material out there for a DVD.

The Hoaxters (1952)

The Left Hates It Because They Don't Want To Admit They Were Wrong
30 January 2022
I watched this film after watching "Gandhi", which was very ironic because he would have been one of the first ones taken by the KGB and never seen again had the Reds overrun India. History has proven this 1952 documentary to be right all along. With the release of the Verona wiretaps of USSR diplomatic codes and post-Cold War interviews of Russian officials, we learned that spies, traitors, dupes, and clueless puppets were there all along. Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein wrote that both of his parents were American Communist Party members. When he did that, his parents were outraged over being named as party members. When he asked them why they didn't want it to be known his mother said, "We don't want people to realize Joe McCarthy was right!" On the downside it gave too much credit to George C. Marshall who was known to look the other way when it came to the Soviets, and to the United Nations, a place for spies and terrorists from it's founding in 1945 to this day. Other than those it's worth the 10 stars I'm giving it.

I Watched This?
17 November 2021
There is only way I could possibly describe this film is, "Three and a half hours of my life I will not be getting back." It was overlong and over done. I've seen high school productions of other musicals that were far better than this. As my niece would say, "Quick, change the channel!"

Realistic? Not even close.

As far as history goes, there are better documentaries out there. Nat Geo comes to mind with their programs. "Franklin D. Roosevelt was president during World War 2" is about as far as it's goes. To say inaccurate is an understatement. It's wrong on the aircraft, uniforms, vehicles, ect, ect. The only good thing is that it makes a good drinking game. AIRCRAFT WRONG!! Glug, glug the Budweiser. UNIFORMS WRONG!! Glug, glug. VEHICLES WRONG!! Glug, glug. FIREARMS ARE WRONG!! Glug, glug. CHURCHILL WASN'T IN OFFICE THEN!! Glug, glug. (When you stop to think about it, Churchill might be interested in playing a few rounds!!) Make sure you get a 24 pack or a large keg. However, most important thing of all, make sure you have at least one or two people who are not playing to be designated drivers, and have the cab company's phone number with you. To use the Captain Morgan's Rum slogan from a few years ago, "Remember, Captain's Orders--the party starts at 21!!".
