Monkey Man (2024)
Better than anything out of Bollywood this year
With some familiar faces from Bollywood, it is fair to say Monkey Man is Better than anything out of Bollywood this year so far. Well acted, great soundtrack, superior cinematography and a decent revenge plot, make this flick a must see. I really enjoyed a lot of the performances most notably that of Dev Patel, who shines in his directional debut. He has taken inspiration from some obvious high flyer flicks like the John Wick trilogy, but adds his own "Desi" style to it. The Hindu mythological piece of the flick will make the film popular on OTT in India as well as the great scenic tour we get of Indian big city life of the upper to high middle class of the India as well as a look into slum life.
Sanam Teri Kasam (2016)
Movie that stays with you.
This was a surprise movie in 2016 when I caught it on Netflix. Both leads were unknown to me, and it was one of the best movies I saw that year. It checks all the boxes out of Bollywood, excellent acting, good songs, memorable plot. How Harshvardhan Rane isn't a top star in Bollywood escapes me, watch anything he is in... he's amazing. If you haven't seen this movie, watch it you won't be dissapointed. This in my opinion is what Bollywood should be about.
The plot is both unique and not unique at the same time. But I think anyone in life can related to some element of what is portrayed.
The only spoiler I'll give it is an emotional ride, but one worth taking!
Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga (2023)
Decent Netflix Movie
Netflix movies are hit and miss, but I thought this one was decent which kept me engaged the whole time. As usual, Yami gives a strong performance and the twists and turns kept it interesting. The directors could have developed Yami's back story a bit more is my only critique.
As for other performances, everyone acts fairly well and the male lead also does a good job.
There is one major plot hole that I will skip describing here but watch for it.
It would be helpful to point out for viewers that this is not a movie that will win any awards but nevertheless will keep you engaged entirely and does not waste any time in the film which was great!
Destroyer (2018)
Solid slow burn thriller
Contrary to some of the reviews, I actually really liked this movie. I thought Kidman deserved some credit for her acting and role portrayal here definitely worthy of some of the nominations she received for best actress.
The plot is interesting, the timeline switching and storyline kept me interested with strong performances from some of the supporting cast as well, but in the end its all about Kidman and her portrayal of this down and out detective.
Worth a watch don't believe the skeptics.
Kaabil (2017)
Best of 2017
I've probably seen Kaabil ten times now and still can say it's the best movie of 2017 hands down. Hrithik shines bright in this one, only slightly overshadowing the performances of Ronit Roy and Yami Gautam. The plot, storyline and execution by Sanjay Gupta take me back to some of the brilliance he had shown early in his career with Hamesha and Aatish. But Kaabil is the complete Package where some of his earlier works fell short, Kaabil makes up for and then some.
