Three's Company: The Bake-Off (1979)
Almost non-stop laughs
This episode is a favorite of mine. There are plenty of laughs for everyone, mostly in the form of double-entendres and great physical comedy! The dean of Jack's school (Mr. Travers, the beady-eyed pervert) needs a winner for a statewide baking competition, and Jack's chocolate cream pie is just the ticket. Chrissy accidentally eats the prize pie, and the girls go to great lengths to fix the problem. Everything that could possibly go wrong, does, and the competition ends in a giant pie fight. What is it about a pie in the face that is so funny? I don't know, but I laugh with each toss! The only thing about this episode that didn't age well is a quick reference to OJ Simpson...but that was just a tiny flaw in this comedy masterpiece.
The Brady Bunch: Getting Davy Jones (1971)
How about the flipside!
This episode is at the top of my list of all time favorite Brady Bunch episodes! I first saw it as a kid in the seventies, a time in which I could see both the Monkees and the Bradys in copious reruns. The plot is simple: Marcia makes a promise, then anxiously tries to figure out how to make good on that promise. And everything works out in the end.
Davy sings his song "Girl" in its entirety, and I was disappointed as a Monkees fan to find out it was never included on his album. Of course things changed after the song gained popularity due to the Brady Bunch Movie. Davy even started singing the song on stage in the nineties, and I was thrilled to be in the audience to hear him!
The scenes Marcia and Davy Jones share are just precious, and her excitement at meeting him is palpable and oh-so-relatable. This is a must-see Brady Bunch episode!
The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries: Sole Survivor (1978)
This one was a favorite of mine!
I don't think I've seen this episode since it was first run, but certain scenes were committed to my memory. I think I liked this one in particular because it was so Shaun-centered. He was the whole reason I watched the show, after all. I remember even as a pre-teen being skeptical about the year-long coma, especially since he showed no ill effects such as speech or mobility problems, and his hair was still perfectly coiffed! Despite the plot holes, this episode held my interest, and it's still one of my favorites. IMDB says I need to add more characters, so I'll just say I got a chuckle out of seeing James Hong in this episode. Every time I see him in anything, I think of his character on Seinfeld in the Chinese restaurant. "Seinfeld, four!"
