Thugs of Hindostan (2018)
Thugs of Hindustan - sinking ship!
Loosely based on Philip Meadows Taylor's 1839 novel Confessions of a Thug, the movie is set in 1795 where Khudabaksh (Amitabh bachchan) leads a band of thugs who challenge the British East India Company to control the large part of India (or Hindostan as known back then). Writer/director Vijay Acharya- fails to give the audience an engaging story line and the twists and turns are very predictable. The writer has also taken many cinematic liberty to make this 300 Cr masala VFX movie!
Amir khan as Firangi Mallah - (apna desi Jack Sparrow!) has portrayed the character very well and so has Amitabh bachchan as Khudabaksh. They both got a good opening sequence (typical Bollywood formula) and most of the dialogue and punchlines.
Fatima Shaikh (Zarira Baig) is fine but has hardly any limelight scene to her credits. Katrina Kaif (Suraiyya) has nothing to do but sing and dance - her role could have been well crafted (but thanks to shoddy editing and many slow motion action sequence the movie is already 3 hours long!)
Music by Ajay-Atul - is below par considering there calibre and past records (Famous for Sairat). Even choreography by Prabudeva is pitiable (Amir and Amitabh looks uncomfortable and Katrina's dancing unfortunately looks out of place).
Background score by John Stewart Eduri is noteworthy (the end credit has the Guy Ritche's 2009 movie 'Shrelock holmes' kinda look and feel which is awesome)
The Visual effects are very good. If Aditya Chorpa had put little moolah on the story line (basis requirement) also then this movie could have been a blockbuster.
Final Verdict- Can give this movie a miss (catch it on the idiot box later!). Anyways, the producers will recover the money by the mammoth amount of prints and satellite distribution. Also Amir Khan's new Chinese territory will be explored later on- and who knows- Yash raj films might be able to Thug (deceive) them too!
Kaabil (2017)
Kaabil - A revenge thriller!
The plot: An underdog hero and a revenge plot – a prefect cocktail to get the party started for year 2017 for the Roshan clan. "Kaabil"- Hrithik Roshan-starer is a revenge thriller. The movie revolves around a blind man going out to avenge his raped wife. This revenge saga gets interesting and thrilling just before the interval- The first half comprises of Hrithik-Yami (both look good together) love story but suddenly a tragedy struck and nothing will stop Hrithik to have his revenge. The Roy brothers (Ronit-Rohit) dons the villain hat for the first time and gives a devilish performance. (But most of the better dialogue is taken away by Hrithik, obviously!) Music: Rajesh Roshan – as usual keep his best stock for his home production – Once again he hits the right note with songs like Kaabil Hoon, Mon Amour, etc.
also remix (Haseeno Ka Deewana and Kisi Se Pyaar Ho Jaye ) of old songs from Rajesh's jukebox are smoothing to the ears. Final Verdict: Worth a one-time watch for Hrithik/Yami , good editing/music and for a gripping story.
Dangal (2016)
Thumbs up for Dangal
An American entertainer/comic actor, Late Andy Kaufman once said that " there is no drama like wrestling" and truly Aamir Khan and his team has cashed in this concept with 'Dangal'. There was not a single person without moist eyes as the curtains dropped in the theater. In one of the climax scene when the national anthem was played- many stood up (some with emotions and some due to peer pressure...) and applauded when one of the main protagonist wins the wrestling title. Dangal is based (partially) on a real life story of Mahavir Singh Phogat, who taught wrestling to his daughter, Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari.
Soundtrack of the movie is very earthy and so are the lyrics. Credits goes to the versatile Amitabh Bhattacharya who penned the beautiful songs and the music is composed by Pritam Chakraborty. The director (Nitesh Tiwari) and writer (Shreyas Jain) - without hammering the thought into the audience brain, beautifully pass on the message of gender equality and importance of hard work and patience. One of the main hero of the movie is the narrative style story telling and the acting of all the lead actors.
This movie is worth a watch!! May this new year begins for all of us with the message that - There is no short cuts to success. You need to put in your blood and sweat in achieving your goals and have lot of patience to reach the summit in life.
