The Sweetest Thing (2002)
Worst movie I've ever seen
A movie about sex, sex, and sex, told from a woman's perspective. Nothing wrong about that. It has been done before. But why does the attempt have to be so terrible bad? The direction, the acting, the music, the way everything is presented: As a product, meant to be a movie of some sort, it is just an awful experience. I have seen my share of bad movies, but even the worst of the worst ('Anaconda' anyone?) have some redeeming qualities. This movie, however, has no redeeming qualities. None. None whatsoever. They could have spent the money to make this movie, to save the whales instead. The whales would be happy, and David Attenborough would be happy.
It really is a shame that this movie is so bad too, because the world need movies like this. We need to hear from the female population, what makes them tick sexually. But uhm, wait. Guess what? We already have something that is 1000000000 times better than this garbage. It is called Sex and the City. Quality stuff that is a series, and also spawned two movies as well (yeah ok, the second movie isn't that good, but there you go)
So if you want to understand women a little bit better, and be entertained in the process, watch that instead.
Akira (1988)
Akira, no spoilers.
One of the best anime movies, ever made. Period. The music, the atmosphere, the incredible story. It has everything it needs, to be awesome. Then there is the thing about age. This movie is old, really old. So they had to restore the movie, as much of the original content was dirty and dusty because, well, the movie first came out in 1988.
So they did an amazing job, cleaning out the dirt from old age, and restoring the picture, giving colours more saturation for more brightness (the original movie was much more dark. The sewer scene for example was almost unwatchable as you couldn't see anything)
What they also did was to redub the voices in English for 5.1 surround systems. The only problem though is that the quality of the voice acting from the new kids on the block, is of abysmal quality, and the script is also different. I wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't for the Blueray disk which let me choose between Japanese 5.1, English 5.1 (2001), and English 2.0 (1988).
They knew what they were doing back in the 80s because of the boom of cartoons being imported to the US and EU marked. This art was lost some 19 years later it seems. I have listened to both English voice overs:
1988, engaging, dynamic, energetic, you hear on the characters voices that they are in peril, both emotionally, and physically. Great varied reactions to terrible life changing events, 100% without swearing. (And sadly, subtitles for this version doesn't exist... Why.... Why...........)
2001, apathetic, out of context, some characters sound like they couldn't care less what happens to them. 'What the' gets said as a reaction 20 times throughout the movie ( the original voice over had 0 'what the'. And lastly, lots of swearing.
The subtitles are a replica of what is said in this new redubbed version.
So yeah, do yourself a favour and watch Akira in its restored for HD quality for sure, but avoid the 2001 English redub AT ALL COSTS. If you really want the crisper soundtrack, watch Akira in Japanese 5.1, and English subtitles directly taken from the 2001 redub. Not perfect, but the Japanese version is not far from the quality of the original. And yeah, you get to learn how many of the swearing in the English language is written.
I watched this yesterday, with 1988 original voice over, with not that crisp sound, and the cruddy subtitles for some laughs. Conclusion: I had a blast. Nice to see such a good movie get the HD treatment. Also glad I got to choose if my characters sounded like they cared, or not.
Akira is a masterpiece, but to fully see why, you also need to see it with a voice over made by the pros.
As the saying goes: If it ain't broke, why fix it ey?
Sisu (2022)
Pathetic garbage
Just a terrible film. No point in denying it. One of the worst movies I've seen in my life. There is no debth to the characters, the acting is horrible, and the action scenes are all laughable (this is a gory action movie after all.)
Yes this is fiction, I know. But we've already had our fair share of action heroes. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, and Keanu Reeves to name a few. So to top them off, you have the hero in this film, which is absoluty, and 100% redicilous.
I mean come on.
None of it comes off as believable. I sat there laughing my way through the whole thing.
All the actors apart some of the women, are absolutely pathetic..
Didn't some of these guys go to acting school? It would help the film if the bad guys (Nazis) talked German. They got some great actors in Germany, and it would help with some better acting.
But they didn't even bother to do that, as all the Nazis talk fluent English. Lazy.
So I sit back and wonder what went in their mind when they thought that 'this would make a good movie.' I am ashamed to have had anything to do with it, and quite frankly, all parties involved should be ashamed as well: The director, the producer, the caster, the actors (apart from some of the women). Yup the whole slew. Take a nap for God's sake!
The money used to make this travesty would be better spent, on lottery tickets.
Saint Maud (2019)
A superbly shot film that fails to deliver scares.
This beautiful movie, with brilliant performances from cast and crew, just fails to be scary. It is about a nurse which due to a horrible incident at work, without any debrief, gets mental problems. Her only companion in her search for absolution is God himself.
The movie dares not go that extra mile, and I would therefore not call this a horror movie. Uncofortable yes, horror no.
If you want a deep delve into broken human psyche, then this is something you will find intetesting.
If you want deep, albeit cheap scares, I would look somewhere else.
NOKAS (2010)
Norwegian Heat
This is one of the best Norwegian movies ever made, which recreates the Nokas robbery that happened in Stavanger in 2004.
The movie doesn't go too far as an action movie, and feels like filmed from real events. It also captures life in general for many people when this robbery occurred, which resulted in the death of a decorated police officer.
Yes this isn't Heat, and this wasn't made in Hollywood. But the movie still has many of the qualities that made Heat, great.
I've watched this movie many times. Although Norwegian movies usually are a mixed bag, the words 'nailed it' really describes my feelings when Nokas comes to mind.
This movie has English subtitles, and is a must watch, for anybody lucky enough to get their hands on it.
Utøya 22. juli (2018)
I will never understand
At the start of the movie, the female leading actor, looks directly into the camera and says in Norwegian: 'You will never understand'
I will never understand why somebody would want to make a movie about Utøya, Norway's biggest tragedy in modern times. It just does not work as a movie.
To make a fictional movie about a confused, selfminded deluded guy, slaughtering innocent children to campaign his sick political agenda, would be impossible to make. Nobody would be interested in it, as that type of content does not sell tickets at the cinema. What is the message at the end of the film? What is the movie trying to achieve? Could the movie probably have a different name? 'Norwegian Psycho'?
No, that wouldn't work either.
Utøya reminds me a lot of Blairwitch Project in style and form. But Blairwitch Project was entirely fictional and its agenda was to scare people. Fair enough, it sold tickets.
Utøya isn't even fiction. It is based on a real tragedy that stabbed a knife in my beloved home country Norway. Because you see, Utøya doesn't tell you the whole story: After the killings, the assassin was allowed to complete his mission, and promote his campaign of hatered, in the courts in front of live TV coverage in HD to the entire world (with english subtitles) for many months, recruiting new followers all across the world. Because this, this is Norway. Here everybody gets a fair trial. It is enough to make anybody sick.
Today the killer is allowed 3 hours of GTA4 each day. And since this is Norway, he'll probably get a ps5 soon.
He is bored out of his mind in prison, after all
Yes, I guess I will never understand. But one thing is for damn sure: Utøya should have never been released.
I Remember You (2015)
Just a spectacular love story.
This movie deserves more credit. It is a love story, with a pinch of sci-fi. The acting is superb, the imagery is spectacular, and the music (which this whole movie is wrapped around in), ties everything together. It only lasts 1,5 hours, and it is probably one of the best 1,5 hours I have had in a long time. Highly recommended stuff.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Yes!
Just a brilliant movie throughout. Samuel as usual brings everything to the table and the main superhero is just awesome. Forget the haters, we needed a feelgood movie after the very dark infinity wars : well, here it is. Bring in the popcorn. If you thought Dr Strange had superpowers, wait till you see Captain Marvel
