Star Trek: Discovery: Jinaal (2024)
Weak dialogue / acting
The writing is not as good as the previous seasons. The story lines are on par with other serial Treks, but the dialogue seems to be lacking. It feels and sounds too simplistic - as if they tried to dumb it down. It generally doesn't fit with the characters as they were developed the last four seasons. Sometimes yes, most times no.
Having said that, Wilson Cruz did a masterful job of switching character. It was more of his acting ability than the writing.
We also definitely need more Reno.
Don't know why they keep the Gray / Adira storyline in place. It's nothing more than filler, maybe even less than nothing, due to both of their abysmal "acting" abilities.
When Adira was first introduced, she was this teenage genius, but due to their lack of acting prowess they never expanded that storyline. They only have one acting mode: twitch and stutter each line they are given to say.
Gray was and still is equivalent to furniture; adds nothing to the franchise but burn through minutes each episode. If the two never existed, the Trek universe would be better off.
I don't understand the ending narration by Gray. It is far too cliche, spoken by someone who can't narrate in any compelling way. All it does is give the director an excuse to do a flyby of characters. Why? Find another way to slip in Moll.
Run the Burbs: Phavourite Child (2024)
Bad directing
Another entertaining episode. The main storyline of family dynamics played well with Sam's side story. The "pumping" scene was particularly funny.
The only two issues with this episode, (it was not the storyline), but in the production.
1. Not using a tripod for filming.
Most, if not all scenes, look as though it was shot with a handheld camera. The micro-wobbles were really annoying. I don't know if they forgot the tripod or a bad stylistic choice.
2. I'm not familiar with the director of this episode, but she noticeably lacks the experience to direct at this level. The cut backs between character dialogues is ok the first couple of times but using it for each scene shows her inexperience. There were no variety. There were very few medium or long establishing shots. And she should, also, learn how to pan the camera properly.
A good episode ruin by poor directing.
Sight Unseen (2024)
Interesting concept but...
Another cop show trying to be different. The concept is intriguing but the execution is not plausible. If you take the series out of reality and watch it objectively it could work but it needs better writing; too cliche. The "bad guy" is easily picked out in episode one. The actors passes the grade and are competent.
The first episode crammed too much into the hour. It went from able to see to going blind to functioning blind while trying to introduce characters' development and interactions.
Character chemistry doesn't happen that fast. There is no indication of a timeline and appears every thing happened in a few days.
The series could work if they stay with its uniqueness and explore that path otherwise it just be another cop show.
The Rookie: Feds (2022)
What a pile of crap.
All the promo for this show, (Canada), features Niecy Nash as if she is the next great actor to grace our screens. There has rarely been an actor this bad on episodic tv. The last one, in recent memory, is Blu del Barrio from Star Trek Discovery.
Niecy Nash makes Blu del Barrio look like the next Meryl Streep, that's how bad Niecy Nash is.
As far as the show quality, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a mid-season cancellation.
Everything from story line to casting to "realism," as far as "FBI" is concerned, is a joke.
Garbage is garbage. Don't waste you time watching, put that hour to better use.
Too bad there isn't a zero star rating.
Star Trek: Discovery: Rosetta (2022)
Need more Jett Reno
Tig Notaro's should have been in more episodes. Her character, Jett Reno, adds that bit of humour that the show needs.
I don't know why the Adira character is given priority in the show given that the Jett Reno part is higher in Starfleet's hierarchy and adds more to the storyline.
The Adira character is a waste of space. Less Blu del Barrio the better.
Dexter: New Blood: Sins of the Father (2022)
two points.
I didn't have problems with Dexter dying at the end, that was inevitable; it had to be done. Whether you agree or not with the story line that lead up to the end, it was the right thing to do. The Dexter's story had to end.
1. My issue is why did he have to kill Logan? That seems out of character for him.
2. How did Angela know where Dexter and Harrison would be?
Star Trek: Discovery: ...But to Connect (2021)
Need to get rid of ...
Two characters that that Discovery needs to get rid of are Aidra and Gray Tal. They are nothing but filler for the show. The writers could easily fill out their worthless five / ten minutes of screen time with something else, or shorten the episode.
They don't add anything to the franchise. Having them walk into the conference room when Suru et al are in discussion is case in point. Junior officers and a civilian can do that? I don't think so. It seems the writers are obligated to have them integrated to the story-line, every episode, whether it is warranted or not.
The actor who portrays Aidra can't act. Why do they feel to embellish every line that are given to read?
I hope that Adira follows Gray out of the show.
