Contracted (2013)
9/10
"Shockingly awkward" - (9.5/10)
15 November 2019
Contracted horror review (9.5/10) "Shockingly awkward".

The Good

"Great visual effects". "Empathy with characters". "In-depth storyline". "Relationships involved". "Sound used shockingly". "Believable character emotions". "Regular setting variation". "Twists, turns, and contrasts". "Plenty of plot surprises".

The Bad

"Lack of lighting effects".

Introduction

Contracted is a 2013, Drama, Horror, Thriller, movie according to IMDb.

The setting of the scene is hardly the scene itself. It is contrasting and jovial. Perhaps spritely. The spectacle here contrasts starkly to the main movie themes to help you appreciate them more.

It introduces you to key characters and those who are featured occasionally later on.

Storyline

The tale is good because tension is built slowly, against real insight to the lives of others along the way. Empathy is key to sympathising with the main character. Interactions between characters, intertwines fiction with reality so well, they almost blend. The movie becomes a combination of abnormal with normal.

Awkwardness develops well, and insecurity of others allows you to empathise deeply with the main character. This is due to understanding of their typical life, and more-so how the horror of events forthcoming, impinges that.

Genre

Definitely a horror. Lots of gore, despair, and tension. The storyline also lends itself to thriller due to the high tempo and constantly dramatic storyline. Visual effects such as makeup and sound effects, are implemented particularly well, to enhance genre themes.

Music

Eerie sounds appear implemented to portray awkwardness, they support gore and troubling observations, which the viewer is encouraged to make.

Characters

Events continuously become progressively more disturbing throughout. The main characters isolation from normality is a great feature of the film. Plenty of setting changes lead to a stimulating watch.

Summary

"Shockingly awkward".

Planet Terror (2007)
7/10
"Light-hearted, humorous, and action-packed. More contrast and fear factor needed, to appease the adult target audience".
29 October 2019
Planet Terror movie review (7/10) - "Light-hearted, humorous, and action-packed. More contrast and fear factor needed, to appease the adult target audience".

The Good

"Gore". "Huge variety of themes" "Does comedy well". "Plenty of action". "Setting and scenery varied plenty". "Adult males dream elements". "Music varied well". "Some minor surprises". "Touching ending".

The Bad

"Tension build ups not evident". "Contrast between humour and fear, not stark enough". "Not a horror". "Slightly mind-numbing storyline". "Background not fully introduced".

Introduction

According to IMDb, Planet Terror is a 2007 Action, Comedy, and Horror movie.

Storyline

Many themes greet your eyes and ears with Planet terror. These include: Gore, love, comedy, relationships, varied character personalities, and light-hearted tone. Lack of thinking was necessary throughout. It linked phrases, (first mentioned early in the film), to later parts, by repeating the same phrases. Lack of tension-building or suspense was apparent, mostly due to it's light -hearted nature. Contrast between serious and funny wasn't quite stark enough to dub this a horror, however it almost manages to be.

Film aspects such as girls, sex, flames, gore, weapons, would appeal to a younger male adult target audience, perhaps someone in their late teens, I'd suggest. There was also some clever camera work. The plot didn't really make much sense, but counting in it's favour, introducing it's events properly would be a colossal task.

Genre

More comedy, and action than anything. Had some good horror elements, but tension and fear factor wasn't there. These define horror.

Music

In terms of music, background sounds were consistent with tension, becoming louder and more dramatic in these moments.

Characters

There were plenty of charming, varied, and well-portrayed characters. Characters included familiar locals, and specialist professionals. Relationships were believable, despite the light-hearted tone of the film. The ending emphasised this point.

One character was played particularly well. She managed to capture the message of equality in society effectively, whilst still playing a key part in a "major role" relationship. Definitely one of the acting highlights of this film...

Summary

Light-hearted, humorous, and action-packed. More contrast and fear factor needed, to appease the adult target audience.

Climax (I) (2018)
9/10
"Fabulous conclusion and profoundly unique" - (9/10).
11 October 2019
Climax 2018 horror movie review "Fabulous conclusion and profoundly unique" - (9/10).

The Good

"Ineffable ending". "Fabulous build up to the end". "Brilliant soundtrack". "Great character emotions". "Passionate acting". "Strong opening". "Diversity of characters". "Clear themes established". "Changing camera angles". "Setting variety".

The Bad

"Intro too long". "Horror theme too sparse at beginning". "Not enough plot changes". "Slow build up to ending".

Introduction

Climax is a 2018, Drama and Horror movie, according to IMDb. It's produced in France, which mandates watching with subtitles on, if indeed you only speak English like me.

Storyline

From the word go, horror and music themes are suggested casually. Voices and temperaments are clearly engaging, from the opening instant. A clever beginning. Ideas to be taken further, are quickly introduced, giving you a clear sense of the main movie themes. This provides a hook to retain the viewer. Introduction is slightly too long however. Following this, things retain interest and intensity, but the plot is slow to progress, which after a time makes things appear tiresome. Following a slightly mediocre centre, the film progresses towards the ending nicely. Themes such as gore were well implemented here, with despair, stress, profound sadness, fear, and anger. Labelling sections with title pages throughout, also adds something. Not many films feature this.

Genre

The progression of horror vibes after the opening was too slow. It took far too long for anything shocking to occur. In parts, the film was more Drama or Adventure focused than Horror, sadly. From the middle though, the genre became more and more of a Horror, until it actually earned it's reputation as a great film. It was very unusual in it's set of themes, but eventually lived up to it's name. It was in fact, difficult to tell exactly when it became a true horror, but once the whole film had elapsed, it almost certainly did.

Characters

Characters quickly differentiated themselves by their responses to questions asked. This allowed the viewer a way into their personalities, which emotionally seemed nicely variable. The character emotions were tested hugely from middle to end. As the film name suggests, it does build up to a "Climax". It's a shame that the beginning half an hour, didn't provide sufficient horror themes, leaving the viewer only partly engaged. Thankfully though, from this point onwards: Pleasure, satisfaction, fear, despair, grief and turmoil, all ensued. Characters were well portrayed throughout, and really sculpted a distinctive signature for the film. It's one you'll struggle to forget.

Music

Eerie music from the word go, ramping up to more sinister tones. Contrast used well. Music was a central theme throughout, helping its variability. From middle to end, the music really develops into it's own. Becoming a haunting backdrop for the horror themes that develop. The overall soundtrack is a real triumph, and very cleverly created and selected.

Summary

"Fabulous conclusion and profoundly unique".

Best of the trilogy by far !!! (8/10)
4 October 2019
Open water 2: Adrift movie review " Best of the trilogy by far" (8/10).

The Good

"Believable acting and emotions". "Best of the 3 in the series". "Lots of tension". "Lots of dying". "Relationships and emotions included. "Lighting effects striking". "Sound used appropriately". "Cut scenes used". "Camera shots varied".

The Bad

"Lack of continuity from the original movie". "Doesn't fit into the theme of the rest of the series". "Confusing ending". "Lack of evil entities". "No sharks". "Limited scenery changes".

Introduction

Open water 2: Adrift is a 2006, Adventure, Drama and Horror film according to IMDb. While all the open water movies play on fear as the element of horror, open water 2 is the only movie of the trilogy which doesn't feature any sharks.

Storyline

The storyline is full of varied themes. Guilt, fear, love, heartbreak, stress, distress, pain and frustration. It thereby allows characters to get properly involved in playing their part in this fluctuating plot. I must say. A pleasant spectacle. Surprisingly adept storyline. Especially considering the series it comes from.

The ending isn't bad, but not great. It doesn't provide closure, nor does it keep to a horror, or distressing theme, consistently. It appears a little messy. Sadly, the storyline of this movie doesn't fit into the open water series well, if at all, so loses any idea of continuity from the original. Whilst the storyline is good, it could have been further enhanced by scenery changes, or other locations being included. For example, other boat captains or coastal places, could have portrayed a simple side story.

Genre

The genre demarcation is probably correct here. It isn't all about horror or adventure, but certainly possesses both of these, with considerable garnish of drama. I'd suggest when assessing it as just a horror, this movie does well in it's own right. Themes such as the "true feeling of despair", enhances the horror element. It becomes more of a horror due to the loss of individuals, than evil entity per se. This takes nothing away from this particular film. That said, something extra may have enhanced it further, as a pure horror.

Characters

Character personalities are developed well throughout. We get to learn of backstories and relationship history, from various individuals. They become relatable emotionally throughout. This is attained, by allowing us into their lives with both emotions, and character stories. These stories are differentiated, between all of the cast. I must say, emotions are very well portrayed here. Also, cut scenes help contrast the past to the present, which is a clever effect.

Music

Sounds and music are very cleverly employed here. Calming and tranquil, to distressed and tension-building at times, describes well the sheer variation of sounds. These do not impair emotional delivery, which is often conveyed in the absence of any sound at all.

Summary

"Best of the trilogy by far". Could've used more evil themes, and better ending.

Ineffably macabre, ending a little mediocre" - (9/10).
11 September 2019
IT "Ineffably macabre, ending a little mediocre".

The Good

"Lighting effects". "Dual storyline". "Tension built before shocks". "Eerie music employed". "Unexpected events". "Charming character personalities". "Lots of individual characters". "Stunning scenery". "Lots of regular shocks". "Really scary depiction of evil".

The Bad

"Slightly too long". "Settings not varied enough". "Ending not shocking enough".

Intro

Last weeks horror review was It comes at night. I rated this 2017 American horror film 8/10. Today we review "IT", a pretty shocking 2017 horror movie.

Storyline

The storyline is actually very stimulating. There are plenty of mysterious twists and turns until everything is neatly sewn up at the end. On the whole, IT is difficult to fault (pun intended).

The ending could have flown a little quicker, and settings could have been mixed up more for greater variety. Scenes were consistently entertaining though, courtesy of both a well-formulated storyline, great acting, and good visual effects. This made the film a good watch for those eager for mystery and thought while viewing.

Storyline was split between characters lives and evil events unfolding, which prevented a theme of just one thread. This meant dull moments were dormant throughout. Unlike evil. Mwah ha ha.

Genre

Horror is the billed genre, and is certainly the correct classification for this movie. "IT" wouldn't fit anything else (pun intended), and that is part of it's elegance.

Characters

The film is both poetic and artistic, with costume, colours, and blood patterns, all appearing maximally macabre. Character count is high and group's of individuals all retain individuality throughout. This is despite unity of beliefs, at times, which shows effective script writing and casting. Relationships are used well, with both testing and loving themes at times. Both strategically employed. Evil is depicted in a variety of ways, preventing boredom during tension building.

Music

Sound effects and music are used fittingly throughout. Eerie and happy music blends into the captivating watch, that is this entire film. More could have been done near the ending to retain interest though. Light effects complemented the music well.

Summary

Ineffably macabre, ending a little mediocre.

Entertaining and tense till middle, Peters out after that".
30 August 2019
It comes at night Horror review (8/10)- "Entertaining and tense till the middle, Peters out after that".

The Good

"Bursting with visual and sound effects". "Striking camera angles". "Dramatic opening scenes". "Immediate sense of mystery". "Spooky, remote setting". "Highly effective tension building". "Thought provoking ending". "Relatable characters". "Good character relationships".

The Bad

"Too much left unexplained". "Mid-section slightly uneventful". "Story in need of development".

Intro

According to Wikipedia, "It Comes at Night is a 2017 American horror film written and directed by Trey Edward Shults".

Storyline

Dramatic opening, immediate sense of mystery, costumes are also used effectively.

From the first minute, darkness and heavy breathing sound effects hook you. Good signs for things to come...

Shadows in darkness are clear, and noise from surface contact almost echoes making you sensitive to every event. Even the setting is spooky and traditional. Images fade into one another, creating striking visual displays.

Time is used well to raise suspense. No event occurs without a chilling build up. Lighting is consistently dim, hiding exactly what the writer chooses.

It was a shame nothing truly shocking happened, for the mid-parts of the film. It felt a little more action would have helped showcase the great special effects even more.

The ending was very thought provoking. The storyline could've been developed from middle to end, to unravel more of the mysteries from evil presence. I feel a little too much was left open ended for the film to be considered great. A shame for such a great beginning...

Genre

Darker themes are immediately evident, with lighting and sound effects from the off... Unfortunately, with a lack of actual horror depiction, things never truly build up to the climax of the horror genre. Many mysteries are apparent throughout, so perhaps "dark thriller" or "mystery drama", may be better genres for this film. Overall though, I guess a slightly letdown horror is how it appears.

Characters

Stressful voices and breathing, immediately reveal emotional depth to main characters. Character tone of voice and visible expression from the word go, gives you empathy for their roles. A combination of stress, sympathy and shock is felt. Sufficient time is spent in dialogue, to understand the situation well enough to unravel plot events to come. Relationships develop well in a believable way, introducing more positive themes, not always seen in horror movies.

Music

Music is a series of clash-style notes, which immediately elevate tension. Sound effects and volume are combined in tense moments, lifting the entire experience. Music is kept quiet, where background sounds are important. Both work together very well... Music in happier times, was kept jaunty.

Summary

"Entertaining and tense till the middle, Peters out after that".

Open Water (2003)
5/10
"Watch the first 12 minutes and last 20. Ignore the rest" (5/10).
22 August 2019
"Watch the first 12 minutes and last 20. Ignore the rest" - (5/10).

The Good

"Pretty scenery". "Natural environment shot well". "Cultural opening". "Underwater/ above water shot switching good". "Okay ending'. "Sound effects improve". "Joyful music works well for opening".

The Bad

"Basic storyline". "Abysmal hour of horror". "Poor acting". "No plot surprises". "Persistent lack of tension". "Lighting effects rare". "Scenery too consistent". "Barely counts as any genre". "Poor script". "Tension lacking in scary moments". "Not remotely entertaining till ending".

Intro

Open water original is a 2003 Adventure, Drama, Horror, Thriller film according to IMDb.

Storyline

The scenery is filmed in an effective way to convey natural beauty in the tropical landscape. Scenery was complemented by the therapeutic portrayal of wildlife. Local culture is showcased well. Camera shots underwater, and above water, are switched effectively. Worryingly, the above points alone, are comfortably the most enjoyable part of this "so called horror".

The story is unfortunately a very slow burner, barely burning at all for most parts. Nothing remotely interesting occurs till 15 minutes in. Tension exists by 24 minutes in, but is quite feeble. The story isn't entirely believable, which is only partly due to poor acting. In the last 20 minutes, everything improves ! The storyline becomes more eventful, even a little tense. Camera shots are switched. In the last 10 minutes, lighting is changed well too. No huge surprises though, with a very standard and predictable plot throughout.

Scenery isn't changed enough, which again lets the film down against competition.

Genre

Being honest, the first half doesn't deserve to call itself any genre. Adventure, Drama, Horror, Thriller are billed on IMDb. Aligned to those expectations, the film has a little drama in the last 18 minutes. It isn't remotely scary until the final half an hour; Even then, barely a horror. Both drama and horror features, are exhibited poorly. Nothing about the storyline is good enough to be thrilling, as for adventure, that should mean excitement.

It doesn't here !!

The Genre is Horror/Drama, seldom living up to this.

Characters

Acting, okay but not dramatic or entertaining. Characters spout corny lines from opening, and don't become any more relatable throughout. You'd feel indifferent whether they died or not. Tension in mood is poorly consistent, with moments of really serious nature, brushed off without any excitement or anticipation. There are glimmers of feeling at times. In the final minutes, the script miraculously rises from bad to adequate.

Music

There were many spritely scene-setting, opening tracks. When darker tones began, sounds were inconsistent with mood. Tracks were slowly introduced. Lack of contrast was evident in the music between traumatic, and calm scenes. Even in times of tension, after they finally emerge, music still failed to instill fear in the viewer. This needs work. The first halfs' soundtrack, was highly disappointing. Just before you begin tugging out your last bits of hair though, the final half an hour, brings better sound effects and more tension.

Thank God !!!

Summary

Watch the first 12 minutes and last 20. Ignore the rest.

Monster Party (2018)
8/10
"Action-packed moments, well-acted" - (7.5/10).
16 August 2019
Monster party horror movie review (7.5/10) - "Action-packed moments, well-acted".

The Good

"Mood switches immediate". "Macabre sounds opening". "Action packed ending". "Gore and sinister themes". "Storyline keeps you guessing at the end". "Plenty of horror effects".

The Bad

"Middle lost a little momentum". "Inaction in parts". "Hard to feel emotions or impact of horrific scenes".

Introduction

Monster party is a 2018, Horror, Thriller and comedy movie according to ImDb.

Storyline

The punchy opening, clearly sets the scene. Fabulous camera effects and sound adjustment complements the storyline perfectly, allowing technical turns to be fluidly negotiated. After a few twists, the plot steadies into a period of more ordinary life, including themes such as crime.

The darkness is there, but is more of a developing toxin, than sustained action. This gives a chance for characters to get known, preventing tedium. There are regular trips and travel, which helps the adventure element of the horror. This is key to unravelling the source of evil. After some time, mystery elements become constructed. The midsection retained some interest with this mystery, aswell as many sly goals of the characters.

The ending unveils mystery, with plenty of action. Some of which relates back to earlier scenes. Relationships are constantly challenged and surprises continue. By all counts, a pretty strong finish.

Genre

From the first minute, you can see darkness in the movie. This is early for a horror, showing the films commitment to spectator experience. Plenty of sound and camera effects, combined with facial expressions, give a dark experience with punishing effectiveness. As for Thriller, the high tempo events featured, do make this a thrilling watch at times, but Comedy seems notably absent. The ending was tantamount to Horror.

Overall the film is certainly a pure horror or thriller/horror, in parts of mystery.

Characters

Character hobbies are clear early on, with clues to their lives given without delay. The characters while played by okay acting, were hard to believe or really feel at times. Whilst there was plenty of action, better acting would have made it more memorable. Fortunately, main character personalities were hard to read, which kept you questioning motives. There were sufficient varied roles, to create an entertaining watch.

Music

Opening music was loud and bold, drawing you in immediately. Sound effects were implemented extremely early, giving the horror impression. Music through the main parts was much softer, allowing actors to remain articulate, without interruption. The music improved in times of action and tension, and was far better in these parts overall.

Summary

Action-packed moments, well acted.

Shin Godzilla (2016)

Shin Godzilla - (Action, Adventure, Drama) movie review - "Relief when the okay ending arrived. Japanese subtitles didn't help (5/10).
9 August 2019
Shin Godzilla - (Action, Adventure, Drama) movie review - "Relief when the okay ending arrived. Japanese subtitles didn't help" - (5/10).

The Good

"Full creature not revealed prematurely". "Easy to understand concept". "End better than beginning".

The Bad

"Totally unbelievable effects". "Subtitles". "Poor opening". "Limited camera angles". "Quickly stimulates boredom". "Tension building music weak".

Introduction

Shin Godzilla is a 2016 (Action, Adventure, Drama) film, featuring the appearance of a giant monster.

Storyline

Dull camera angles complement a very simplistic storyline. Acting seems robotic. Roles of people that seem like robots, appear uniform and alike. No individual storylines exist for characters. The sole story, is about an event which begins to unfold very suddenly. The drama isn't felt at all by the viewer though, until at least an hour into the film.

Once this point is crossed, decision making in the film, and greater emotions, liven proceedings a little. This stops the viewer falling asleep. The ending is better than the beginning, displaying an "okay" climax. Nothing special still ...

Overall, far too basic and dull storyline to be relatable, believable, or remotely worth a watch.

Genre

The billed genre on IMDb is (Action, Adventure, Drama). The opening displays scenes, intended to convey action and excitement. Instead, they educate on poor effects and surrealism. It feels like anything but all it's genre keywords. IMDb could've picked ( Lullaby, Gaming and Mythological) to be equally as valid. After a little while, a few moments gave a comedy impression. This isn't what the film is billed for though.

Probably just me, laughing at the dire acting...

Despite events, the film is certainly not a horror, and poor effects detract from any clear genre working.

Characters

Very dull and boring, with no individual personalities coming through. By the end, a few distinct characters could be seen, feels too little, too late.

Music

None in the opening scenes. No camera effects to compensate. Eventually music began after mass destruction began to occur. Whilst this was the correct theme of music, it really didn't increase tension enough. By half an hour, music begins to be more effective.

Summary

Relief when the okay ending arrived. Japanese subtitles didn't help.

The Bad

Overlord is a 1975 War film, set in wartime Britain during the Second World War.

Storyline

The film has a compact length to prevent viewer boredom. The story begins quickly, with lots of effects and drama, before settling into a more stable period. There were a few stretches in the middle where the focus was a little unclear, leaving the viewer prone to distraction. The film had a clear theme from the start, and should be commended for sticking with it. The outstanding ending really lifts the experience. The lack of words in important moments, helps pictures powerfully reflect events. Daily life takes place with backing music, but little else. Your attention is drawn in as a result.

Genre

From the very start, camera shots elucidate the midst of war. The music and effects, further give this away as a horror. Throughout, the darker side was featured more and more. The black and white colours work well in the movie, making everything appear more evil.

Overall, I would describe this as a "War horror" rather than simply a "War" film, one that brings a real sense of powerful meaning and emotion.

Characters

Tension building was carried out well, firstly using characters serious facial expression, and secondly cut scenes in key moments. These helped sustain tension through uneventful points in the storyline. Contrasts were used at every turn, keeping scenes standing, for poignant meaning. Not a word was uttered for at least 4 minutes, allowing characters to appear like clones. This seemed to be the impression the film maker was going for, from the off ...

When speaking commenced, it was immediately clear the main characters were accustomed to the war era. This highlighted good acting and casting. Characters felt relatable too, thereby improving scenes that followed.

The main roles were followed closely, giving you real insight into their lives. The film was lifted by a great ending, and sustained the importance of relationships till the end.

Music

The soundtrack began effectively with an eerie first track, including marching sounds and military discipline. Happier moments were supported by joyful background music. Tracks fitted moods well for the film, and were mixed up in tempo and style. Happy, sad, eerie and instrumental themes, kept music well-implemented, and varied.

Summary

Powerful, emotional, with meaningful ending.
