Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)
"MISSION IMPOSSIBLE - FALLOUT": MY REVIEW
You don't go to watch a Mission Impossible film expecting an out-of-the-world story. You know it's the same "good vs evil" story. But Wait....if u have watched the previous movies in the series, you would probably know how they all were engaging: a pacy screenplay, thrilling action set pieces coupled with the background score and good acting. Although I have not watched the first 3 film's in the series (which is not a must), i still enjoyed Ghost protocol, mainly for that vertigo inducing Burj Khalifa scene, and Rouge Nation. So the expectations for the 6th installment was tremendous. So, does it meet the expectations? The answer in short is a big "YES". But before going further, the plot...
Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is back for his next mission, which is to track down the terrorist organisation, The Apostles, and it's leader John Lark who is still unknown. He is also given the information that Soloman Lane (Sean Harris) (from the previous film) has a direct connection to The Apostles and John Lark. With him on his mission are August Walker ( Henry Cavil), a CIA agent tasked to look upon Ethan, former agents Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) and Luther ( Ving Rhames) and an MI6 agent Ilsa Faust ( Rebecca Ferguson). How they uncover the conspiracy forms the rest of the film...
As I said before, the story is nothing new. But the screenplay is racy and thrilling and doesn't give you a moment to blink. The action scenes are the mainstay of the film. Not even one set piece were felt unnecessary. Let it be the fist fight in the restroom, the thrilling bike chase in Paris, that footchase in London or the climax action in Kashmir, all were spectacularly shot and a treat to watch in 3D. The movie also has a whole lot of twists which were engaging. The editing was tight. The background score was pulsating. The director, Christopher McQuarrie, has done a great job. A hatts off to him.
Now to the performances. Tom Cruise has done a great job as Ethan Hunt, the most lovable rouge agent, and even at the age of 56 , does all the stunts with such ease. Henry Cavil was good in the given role and was at par with Tom. Simon Pegg is as always good, so is Ving Rhames. Sean Harris puts a good show. Vanessa Kirby has nothing much to do but the same can't be said for Rebecca Ferguson. The rest of the cast make their presence felt.
So all in all this is a must watch in the series after Ghost Protocol. Make sure you make time for it.
My rating : 4/5
Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)
"ANT MAN AND THE WASP"- MY REVIEW
Ant man and the Wasp, directed by Peyton Reed, is a fun filled adventure and exactly the kind of popcorn entertainment. Now after Infinity War, you expect a movie coming after it from the MCU to be a masterpiece. But Ant man and the Wasp, a little more superior to its predecessor, is about shrinking heroes, but also proves that size "really" doesn't matter.
Now to the plot....Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and his daughter Hope (Evangaline Lily) Is on a mission to bring back Janet( Michelle Pfeier), who is Pym's wife, who is stuck in the Quantam Realm. Meanwhile Scot a.k.a Ant man (Paul Rudd) Is under house arrest for violating the Sokovia Accords and for aiding Captain America. How he helps Hope and Hank forms a major part of the story. Meanwhile threat arises in the form of Ghost a.k.a Ava ( Hannah John Kamen) who has something to do with Hank's past..
The screenplay of the film is highly engaging and doesn't bore u even for a minute. The movie had a lot of jokes, thanks to the main trio and Michael Pena as Scott's friend Luis. The action scenes, like the first movie, we're thrilling, funny and most importantly fresh. There is no world destruction thankfully here. The visual effects, background score, editing etc.. we're done neatly.
Now to the performances... The film's soul is the trio of Paul, Michael and Evangeline. Paul is as always dependable. Michael gets a lot to do be it the comedy scenes or the dramatic one's. Evangeline springs a pleasant surprise. She didn't had to contribute much in the last film but here she shows her capability. Michael Pena was really good. Hannah John as the Ghost may not be as menacing as the recently seen villains in the MCU, but still delivers a sincere performance. Michelle Pfeier appears in the concluding moments. The rest of the supporting cast, the old and the new ones , we're good.
So all in all ANT MAN AND THE WASP delivers terrific entertainment. Go for it!!!
My rating : 4.5/5
PS: Wait for the mid-credit scene. It is gonna shock u for sure.....
Deadpool 2 (2018)
"DEADPOOL 2"- MY REVIEW
HE IS BACK!!! And this time he isn't alone. Back in 2016, we saw the rise of an anti - hero, Deadpool, who was foul mouthed but at the same time witty and adorable. So fortunately, the expectations for DP2 will be higher. So how's the film? Let's take a look. But before that the plot... Wade Wilson a.k.a Deadpool is a now a well know mercenary. After the murder of his wife Vanessa, he decides to commit suicide, but is saved in time by Colossus, who in turn asks him to join the X - men. Meanwhile, DP takes the responsibility of protecting a mutant child, Russelles a.k.a Firefist from a time travelling soldier Cable.
That's all I can tell u about the plot. The film is however slightly better than the first part. Anyway, that doesn't , mean that it's devoid of R rated violence . There r cuss words, body being teared apart, wire plugged into a#@ and so on. Anyway this is the best superhero movie this year along with Infinity war. The technical parts of the film were all good. Be it the usage of the background score during action scenes or the visual effects, all were done neatly. Dialogues were witty and has a lot of references to the old and latest released films. Action scenes were slick and not overdone. Editing was good , but there was some dragging felt towards the middle portion.
Now to the performances. Ryan Reynolds just rocked as Deadpool. His performance is sure to be appreciated. Josh Brolin as Cable was at par with Reynolds. Also the reference to his character, "THANOS" was funny. Another memorable performance was that of Zazie Beetz as Domino. Stefan Kapicic as Colossus had a small role but his scenes with DP are sure to bring in laugh out loud moments. Rest of the supporting cast were good, especially Karan Soni as Dopinder.
So all in all, DP 2 is superior than its first part . Go in and have a BLAST..... My rating- 4/5
P.S: Don't miss the mid credit scenes. They r the best seen in recent times....
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
"AVENGERS:INFINITY WAR"- MY REVIEW
Avengers: Infinity War, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo( who gave us the terrific Civil War and The Winter Soldier), is what we can term as a satisfying summer spectacle. This is not a film. It's an event. In a film with more than 20 superheroes, not once does one feel that any one of them are underutilized.
The plot, as you all know , is about the conquest by Thanos (who is a computer generated character and given a terrific motion capture performance by Josh Brolin), to conquer all the 6 infinity stones and to wipe out half the universe. It's all up to the Avengers along with the Guardians of the Galaxy to stop his evil plans.
That's all I can tell u about the plot. Because revealing too much will kill the experience. The director(s) have packed in all they can - marvelous action set pieces, humour, twists and dramatic moments etc.... Almost all the department have done their jobs neatly. Be it the stunning VFX or the exhilarating background score , the film has it all. The climax, I would like to mention, is not at all what you would expect, especially since this is a Marvel movie. Also the character deaths too will come across as a shock.
Now coming to the performances, the list is going to be too long if I mention each and every actor. Everyone has done their roles perfectly and not once do you feel that a single character is given prominence. But a special mention has to be definitely given to Brolin for his outstanding performance. He is a villain that's menacing and heartwarming at the same time.
Hats off for the director(s) for undertaking a project of this magnificience.
So all in all this an experience or should I say THIS IS the Marvel movie we all waited for. So go in and have a Blast. My rating- 4.5/5
P.S: Do not miss the END CREDITS...
Abrahaminte Santhathikal (2018)
"ABRAHAMINTE SANTHATHIKAL"- MY REVIEW
It's been a time since Mammootty gave us a good movie after Pathemari. The movies that came after, majority of them, we're tasteless affairs, the only watchable one being the above average Great Father.
But Wait! Mammootty is back with a bang... Abrahaminte Santhathikal ,directed by Shaji Padoor and scripted by Hanneef Adeni is an action-crime thriller, which, despite being dark, is a stylishly mounted, brisk thriller. Mammootty has delivered us many cop movies in the past but this one's different from that. This film also delves into complex relations which makes it an interesting watch.
Now to the plot.... Derrick Abraham (Mammootty), is a dutiful police officer who does not let anything come between his duty, even when it is his own blood. When his brother, Philip (Anson Paul) is jailed for a case he claims he did not commit, Derrick has to decide what to do next before their relation turns deadly...
That's all I can tell u as the plot is concerned. As I had said before, this one's a dark film but does not make u uncomfortable a bit. It moves at a feverish pace from beginning. The cinematography was done neatly. The movie throughout bears a slick look. The background score gives the required feel. The songs were really good. Not even one song was felt unnecessary. But use of the song, 'Kaneerattil' twice was not required. The "twist" in the climax was really a shocker and one of the best plot twist since movies like Drishyam and Mumbai Police...
Now to the performances. Mammootty is as always good. It's been a while since he gave us a character to care for. Anson Paul too has delivered a good performance, specially in the second half. Shajohn was good. His scenes in the climax will be met with claps and whistles. Rest of the supporting cast did a great job.
So all in all, this a must watch movie this year and if possible catch it in the nearest theatre possible. It's worth the money spent.
My rating : 4.5/5
Padmaavat (2018)
"PADMAAVAT"- My Review
Historical Movies are loved by the moviegoers. This can be seen with the acceptance of movies like Baahubali, Jodhaa Akbar and Bajirao Mastani in the past.
Padmaavat, directed by the one and only Sanjay leela bhansali, who gave us the terrific Bajirao Mastani, returns with yet another periodical drama. Set in AD 1303, it tells us the story of Alauddin Khilji (Ranveer Singh) and his obbsession towards Rani Padmavati(Deepika), wife of Maharawal Ratan Singh( Shahid Kapoor).
Just like Bajirao Mastani, Bhansali has directed this film in a grand scale but one cannot overlook the fact that it cannot rise above Bajirao Mastani at some times. But as a standalone film, Bhansali has to be credited for handling the movie in a well manner.
The Cinematography( Sudeep Chatterjee) is done neatly. Music (Bhansali) was good but not remeberable except for the songs 'Ghoomar' and 'Khalibali'. Editing (Bhansali, Akiv Ali, Jayant Jadhar) was well done but could have been shorter at some places. The war scenes were a treat to watch especially the climax fight between Ranveer and Shahid.
Now comimg to the performances, Padmaavat completely belongs to Ranveer Singh who is menacing as Alaudin Khilji. He dominates the movie, sometimes going ahead of others. Deepika Padukone makes her presence felt especially in the second half. Shahid Kapoor does an above average performance which could have been better. Of the supporting cast, it's Jim Sarbh's role as Malik Kafur who plays the slave of Alaudin Khilaji, which is going to be remembered. Rest of the cast does a good job.
Padmaavat is not a perfect movie but it can be watched for Ranveer Singh and also because of it's epic vision.
My rating - 4/5
Padman (2018)
"PADMAN"- My Review
In recent times, we have seen Bollywood film-makers attempting movies basedvd on taboo subjects like Toilet Ek Prem Katha (dealt with the issue of open defeication), Shubh Mangal Saavdhan ( dealt with erectile disynfunction) etc..
Now Padman, written and directed by R. Balki, deals with the issue of menstrual hygiene. Before telling more, first the plot.
The film tells the story of Lakshmikanth Chauhan ( Akshay Kumar ), who after his marriage, realises to what extent his wife and all the other women are affected by their menses, and sets out to invent a low cost sanitary pad machine.
As you all know, the movie is based on the real life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, a social activist from Tamil Nadu. But the film is made suiting to the Northern sensibilities. Even though it's a biopic, never does it get serious or preachy. The director has balanced the movie with content and entertainment. There are many scenes in the movie which will leave a lasting effect on the viewer. One being the scene before interval, when Akshay decides to test the Pad he made by himself. And the other, Akshay's speech at the United Nations
The music of the movies was good. The songs 'Aaj se teri' and the Title track was really memorable. Cinematography too was done well.
Now to the performances. It requires guts for an actor to act in a film dealing with a subject on menstrual hygiene. Akshay Kumar acts his part with perfection. It's his second film recently, after TEPK, which deals with a taboo subject. Raadhika Apte too impresses. Her moments with Akshay was really good. Sonam Kapoor plays her role good even though the love angle just before the climax was not required. Amitabh Bachchan appears in a cameo. Rest of the supporting actors have done their parts well.
All I all PADMAN is a film to be watched. Highly recommended.
My rating- 4/5
Black Panther (2018)
"BLACK PANTHER"- My Review
Just like we were introduced to Asgard in the Thor trilogy (although it was more fun in the the third movie), Black Panther introduces us to Wakanda, a place/Kingdom, hidden from the outside world in the continent of Africa.
Directed by Ryan Coogler, The plot follows the events after Captain America: Civil War, where T'Challa a.k.a. Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman ) , is to be crowned the king of Wakanda where he have to face his nemesis in the form of Erik "Killimonger" (Michael. B. Jordan) who has a past related to Wakanda.
Now I have to say that this is a more matured movie after Civil War. There is action and fun in good amount but the story is given more depth. Add to that the African Culture and background gives the film a new look and from the view of the MC universe.
Technical matters of the film are all done well. Be it the Cinematography, Editing ,Action or the exhilarating Background score..
Now to the performances...
Chadwick Boseman has done a perfect job as The Black Panther. Although he appeared in a brief role in Civil war, the depth of his character was felt more in this film. Equally brilliant was Michael B Jordan in a negative role bringing in the required menace and can be considered another best villain in the MC universe. The supporting cast was efficient. The ones who require a mention is Daniel Kaluyya,
Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Lupita Nyong'o and Letita Wright. Andy Serous in a small role has done well.
So all in all Black Panther is another feather in the cap of the MC universe and is a must watch...
My rating: 4/5
Thaanaa Serndha Koottam (2018)
"Thaana Serntha Kootam"- My Review
Thaana Serntha Kootam, directed by Vignesh Shivn, is a remake of the Hindi film Special (26)Chabbis (Directed by Neeraj Pandey, Starring Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher and Manoj Bajpayee). For those, who like me, have watched the original, here's an advice: "STAY AWAY."This is because the film do not have that seriousness that Special 26 had. It's just treated as a masala movie and the outcome is just plain average
Now to the plot: The movie is set in 1987 (although is does not give us a feel) and is about a group of con artists who pose as CBI agents and conduct various raids.
Now to the possitives of the film:
The songs, Surya and Ramya Krishnan's performance and some nice laughs.
Negatives:
The thrilling element is completely missing. The climax too comes across as ameteurish. So many unwanted scenes etc...
That's all to write about it. Usually i write long reviews, but for this film, an advice is better.
My rating: 2/5
Aadhi (2018)
"Aadhi"- My Review
Jeethu Joseph. The name is synonymous with thriller movies. Be it Drishyam or Memories or even his first film, Detective, all were highly appreciated. But it was a dissapointment when it came to the 2016 film, Oozham.
Now he has come with a new film Aadhi. Expectations were many for this film. Firstly, it is directed by Jeethu joseph. Second, It is the debut of Pranav Mohanlal. Third, the stunts (more on that later).
Now, the plot: Adhithya Mohan, an aspiring musician, who dreams it of making it big, gets a chance to do a show in Bangalore. An incident there makes him to run for his life.
The first half of Aadhi goes off in a slow mode setting up the story. The notable sequence is the action in the market place and the stunts performed (Parkour) is very impressive. But it's the second half that has it's share of thrills which leads to the climax with an unpredictable twist. The songs were good even though the two songs in the second half could have been avoided. The pick of the songs are 'Mizhiyoram(Unplugged Version)' and 'Gypsy woman.'
Jeethu Joseph is an expert when he handles thrillers. This can be seen in the second half of the film. Editing (Ayoob Khan) was done neatly but could have trimmed some portions in first half. Cinematography (Satheesh Kurup) was good. Stunts, as I said before, was awesome. Have'nt seen any actor doing Parkour in any Malayalam film and Pranav needs to be applauded for performing the stunts himself.
Now to the performances. Pranav Mohanlal as Aadhi is natural. He is outstanding while doing the action as well as in emotional scenes. Sharafudeen was good. Anusree too did a good job. Sideeq has a nice role. Lena was average. Siju Wilson in a negative role did well. Jagapathi Babu's role could have been better thought of. Mohanlal in a cameo was good.
All in all, Aadhi can be watched for it's leading man and for the stunts. You will be entertained.
My rating - 3.5/5
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)
"JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE" - MY REVIEW
Jumanji: Welcome to the jungle, directed by Jake Kasdan, is an action adventure movie and by no means a direct sequel to the original Jumanji movie released in 1997.
The plot of the film is about four High school teenagers, who while serving detention, comes across the video game and get sucked into it. By doing so they adopt their own 'Avatars' and have to complete the mission given to them to safely reach home.
Director Jake ensures that the audience are entertained throughout the film. The highlights of the movie are it's action, Cinematography and a bunch of good actors. But the film is not without it's share of flaws. The villain's role could have been more tight. That might have made the movie a bit more thrilling.
Now to the performances. The characters in the game were just enjoyable. Dwayne Johnson works well in the action scenes as well as in the comedy. Kevin Hart was terrific. Kareen Gillan was good especially in the action scenes. Jack Black was sidelined even though he was good in some scenes. The actors in the real world did'nt have much of a role but have made their presence felt. Bobby Cannavale ( Villain), as I mentioned before, could have been provided with a more good role.
All in all Jumaji:Welcome to the jungle, is a fun ride with well excecuted action scenes and witty one liners. Just give it a shot and u won't be dissapointed.
My rating- 3.5/5

Masterpiece (2017)
"MASTERPIECE - A MASSY FLICK"
Masterpiece directed by Ajai Vasudev (after Rajadhiraja), is a mass action entertainer which actually works even though it has its share of flaws. The film has its star cast consisting of Mammootty, Uni mukundan, Varalaxmi, Mukesh, Shajohn, Goulding Suresh, Maqbool Salman and so on..
The story of the film is set in a campus where we have 2 rival groups (as seen in most movies) and some incidents that take place. In between a new professor joins and tries to make peace with the groups.
Even though we have seen a similar movie (Velipadinte Pusthakam) with the same theme this year, Masterpiece, I shall say is far better because the screenplay is racy and never bores you. After writting a blockbuster hit last year, Udayakrishna returns yet again and the dialogues are the one that suit a mass movie.
But this film is not with its share of flaws because the film could have been done with a little more shorter lenght as some scenes were not up to mark. Also even though the songs sounded good to the ears, the placement of 3 songs in the second half seemed not to well.
Despite its flaws the movie keeps us engaged as it is also treated as anew investigation thriller coupled with some well performed action and some humour.
Mammootty shine as Edward Livingston. This role seemed tailor made for him. Uni Mukundan too shined in his role especially in action sequences. Rest of the cast did a good job but the character of Captain Raju seemed totally out of sync with the movie.
So all in all this might not be a must watch but surely it gives a bang for your buck.
My rating: 3/5
Newton (2017)
"NEWTON- A MUST WATCH"
Newton, directed by Amit V Masurkar, is one of the best hindi films released this year. The film tries to tell us about the election processes taking place in India and a situation in which the voters are confused as to choose who should govern them.
The main story is about Nutan Kumar a.k.a Newton, who along with 3 other officers are entrusted the responsibility of conducting free and fair elections in the conflict-ridden jungles of Chhattisgarh.
Written bu Masurkar and Screenplay by both Masurkar and Mayanak Tewari, the whole movie is done in a realistic manner. Not once do we feel that only the hero is getting the importance. Every actor is given equal amount of screentime here. Also, the lenght (1.46 hrs) is well spent, because not once do we feel the film to be slow or dull. Cinematography (Swapnil) is done very well. Music ( Benedict Taylor and Naren Chandavarkar) was well done and gels smoothly with the realistic mode of the film. Editing, as I said before, was good. The sole hiccup in an otherwise perfect movie was that climax could have been a bit more better. That's it..
Now coming to the performances, Rajkumar Rao shines as Newton. Playing the role of an everyday man, he proves his calibre as an actor. Pankaj Tripathi is equally good as Aatma Singh and has done a remarkable job. Rest of the cast (Anjali Patil as Malko, Raghubir Yadav as Loknath etc..) have done theirs roles well.
So all in all, this is a must watch movie as it talks to us about a topic that is to be taken seriously.
My rating: 4/5
It (2017)
"Best Horror Movie Of 2017"
IT directed by Andi Muscheitti is a coming-of-age horror thriller. It's not just another horror movie where the makers try to scare the viewers by throwing too much violence on screen. This film has a well made script which talks about friendships, fears within teenagers, their bonding and so on. The film tells us the story of seven kids led by a kid names Bill, who are bullied, who find themselves in a situation facing a demon names Penniwise, the dancing clown. For any horror movie to work out, it should have the fear factor which IT has and that too in well proportions. I would like to mention the scenes which scared me out of hell but it would doing injustice to the movie. Those scenes are to be experienced. But the film, as I said before, does not rely too heavily on the horror factor but also has its own light moments. The bond between the characters are done well and you feel for them, such is the way of presentation. Technically too, the film does not disappoint. The Music and the Background Score (Benjamin Wallfisch) was terrific. The cinematography (Chung-hoon Chung) was also good. Editing (Jason Ballentine) was done neatly. Performance wise, every actors have done their roles neatly. Be it Jaeden as 'Bill' or Bill Skarsgard as "Pennywise", all were good. So make sure that you watch this movie or should I say you your own time for IT. My rating: 4/5
Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017)
An Outdated flick!!!!!!!!!!
SRK has lost his charm. It can be seen in his movies releasing nowadays. Only his recently release movie Fan impressed me. Dear Zindagi bored me to death and Raees was an average movie. The old SRK, who used to make us proud by doing movies like DDLJ,MHN,Chak DE India etc.. is gone. Now coming to the film, It's an Imtiaz Ali film and you expect it to be like JWM or Rockstar but once you start watching the movie, you realize there is nothing much in the hype. Now about the story line: After losing her engagement ring while touring in Europe, a woman(Anushka Sharma) and her tour guide(SRK), retrace their steps in order to find it. When the trailers of the movie were out, there was much hype surrounding it. But the film is high on hype and low on substance. It's the same old clichéd story and never except anything much. Now to the positive of the film: 1.Beautiful locales of Europe, Budapest etc.. 2.The songs, mainly Radha, Hawayein, Beech beech main and Buterfly. 3. And of course SRK and Anushka.
Negative: 1.2nd half could have been trimmed. 2. Unwanted characters increase the length. 3. Too many songs in 2nd half. 4. Clichéd story line.
Now coming to the performances, SRK handles his role well, even he could have been better at some places. Anushka too gives a good performance.
So overall this movie is never a must watch but can just be watched once for SRK and Anushka
My rating: 2.5/5
Tubelight (2017)
"A Good One Time Watch"
Don't know why this film is gaining negative reviews. After reading the reviews, I still decided to watch the movie ready to criticize it. But after watching the film I had a change in my opinion. It was really entertaining. Now saying about the movie, it is about Lakshman (Salman) whose brother is his life. But when his brother is selected for the war, he is shattered. But his hope and faith keep him waiting. That's the storyline. Some said it was overly melodramatic. But I think the statement is wrong. There was a good amount of drama woven into the narrative but never loses it's grip. The other thing to applaud is its camera work and background score. Those sections were neatly done. But there are also negatives in the movie. The film sometimes moves in a slow mode. And also the climax need not be long drawn. Now coming to the performances, Salman proves yet again he can carry a film on his shoulders. Sohail Khan has also done a wonderful job even though he had less role. Also the supporting cast which includes Zhu Zhu, Martin Rey Tangu, Isha Talwar, Om puri and Mohammed Zeeshan Aayub has also done their roles neatly. So overall this movie can be considered a clean family entertainer and will be a bang for your buck. My rating: 3.5/5
