Hindi Medium (2017)
The bitter Indian education system topped with loads of sweet humour
Director, Saket Chaudhary, has served its audience a vital dosage of 'current education system' garnished with humour. The concept is apt to the present day admissions scenario in India and the increasing concern of parents towards education of their ward. The first half of the movie is hilarious and at the same time a reality checks to the people who are a part of the high class show-off battle. Whereas the second half concentrate on the goodness of those who are poverty stricken. This over-stretched sub plot diverts the focus of its audience.
Strength: The concept of the film, which might be a guiding lamp to those who are getting lost in the senseless race of self-conceit based on their English speaking skills. Comic timing.
Weakness: The film goes overboard when the contrast between high class society and poor class is brought into the plot.
Meri Pyaari Bindu (2017)
Musical romance to assist people to forget their long lost love
Director, Akshay Roy promises to enlighten his audience with the art to forget ones true love through this creation. The movie recreates the magic of 80's through retro style music and old streets of Kolkata. It is yet another love story where the crazy lover goes head over heels just to have a 'yes' of the heartless, ambitiously-confused girl. Movie aims to focus on unconventional aspects of love but it ends up in a tangle as the various sub plots aren't worked well to the details.
Strength: The music. Timeline in which the story is built, gives it essence of a fresh love story.
Weakness: It's just another love story.
Noor (2017)
Tale of quarter-life crisis with unrealistic dosage of ethics
Director Sunhil Sippy seems unplanned while directing the movie as he loses focus and gets confused on what the film should be all about. In an attempt to emphasize on the moral responsibilities of a journalist and the rising organized crimes in India, he lost Noor which could have been a flawless entertainment and a self-reflecting movie for today's youth who is facing quarter-life crisis. The first half of the movie is a fun-filled insight into the life of Noor and is the soul of the movie. Here we meet this ambitious lady who won't settle down for anything immaterial, be it on professional front or her personal life. The script gets serious in the later part of the movie where she accidentally bumps into a racket. The chaos in the movie could have been avoided if illegal activities of the state were not involved just for the sake of highlighting and not with an intention of working towards the change.
Strength: Sonakshi Sinha who very comfortably steps into the shoes of Noor.
Weakness: The over-exhaustive plot. Dialogues, which at several occasion seems unnatural and for the sake of adding moral take-away.
Begum Jaan (2017)
Have you done your part before expecting others to stand for you?
Director Srijit Mukherjee is a man of art and with Begum Jaan he has a strong message of self-belief and self-empowerment being the most important part for a country or an individual to be independent and to fight for ones own rights. The movie might appear to be a non-sense or over-dramatic to shallow audience but if even once have you felt weak in the hands of the unwritten, unjust laws of the nation or the society, you would get the essence of this story. This is not a commercial entertainment made up to glamorize the female actors rather a film which speaks about the darker face of the society i.e. a brothel, a place where people go to seek happiness but won't give a damn if required to spread happiness with. And as the brothel and its residents are the life of the movie, the characters are found swearing in almost every other dialogue, hence the movie is not recommended for meek audience.
Strength: Acting, Casting for each character, Songs seem situational thus goes okay with the scenes. Weakness: Sub plots-which are there for a reason to depict the external factors leading to the present situation of each character, but is feels dislodged at times.
