Medias Res (2017)
A Modern Indie Noir Done Right
Media Res takes you on a journey with a couple of unlikely friends when they end up in the wrong place at the wrong time while just trying to survive their daily lives. This is a low budget film that manages to feel like it isn't low budget and that's not something that's easy to accomplish. The characters are interesting and the story is interwoven with subtle comedic elements, which helps lift some of the tension created by what the characters in the film are experiencing. And all of this is done expertly. The film takes a much darker turn that what I was expecting in the last act, but that's what makes this thriller so intriguing. Medias Res features a fresh storyline that you haven't seen before and it is executed skillfully to make this a true modern noir. I can't wait to see what these filmmakers do next.
St. Agatha (2018)
Haunting and brutal
When Mary finds herself pregnant and broke, she goes to live in a convent. Her life turns into a living nightmare that is disorienting for both Mary and the viewer.Carolyn Hennesy is outstanding as the evil Mother Superior and has some truly great lines. Sabrina Kern also stands out as Mary. The visuals and sound combined with some terrifyingly brutal moments make St. Agatha a haunting and must-see film for horror fans. This film contains one of the most insane and creative kills I've ever witnessed in a horror film. It will leave you questioning your sanity.
The Dark Tapes (2016)
Fresh take on found footage
The Dark Tapes is a four story horror anthology. I'm a big fan of horror anthologies and the stories in this one are all original and had surprise endings that I didn't see coming. There are a lot of found footage films out there, but The Dark Tapes felt fresh and was the most unique found footage film I've seen in a long time. The stories are well written and entertaining and I think this film proves that you don't have to have a big budget to make a good movie. There are some genuinely creepy moments and not a whole lot of blood and gore,so I would think this film would appeal to a wider audience than some of your "typical" horror films. This movie is anything but typical. If you like horror and want to see found footage presented in a new way, definitely check out this anthology. It's a lot of fun.
