How to Build a Sex Room (2022)
Unexpectedly humorous and heartwarming
Melody the host is charming and entertaining, pacing is great and designs are interesting. I wasn't expecting to finish this, just was curious but the connections she makes with people are so genuine and authentic, I didn't expect to be as moved as I was and I'm usually turned off from reality tv. The banter between her and the construction guy is hilarious.
Slow Horses (2022)
typical 'meh' British crime drama
Interesting start but side character cheese was foul and took away from the main plot. So much cringe dialogue I almost gave up and perhaps should have, a 6 is generous... I really wanted this to be better.
Severance (2022)
Most certainly the best new show of the year!
If you like Black Mirror, you'll love this series. It's rare that I can watch a full episode and not have a single moment where I'm not glued to the screen. This show, it's haunting soundtrack, brilliant acting and writing, will not disappoint.
Human Resources (2022)
Everything I hated about big mouths last season
Awkward pacing, lazy animation, and desperate attempts at humor just ended up boring me. Had to quit halfway through the second episode. I really wanted to like this too...
Hillsong: A Megachurch Exposed (2022)
Should have been a single episode
The first episode was powerful, especially the focus on how worship music is designed to provoke an emotional response that congregations interpret as divine (especially as a former worship leader). Afterwards, it felt so drawn out and had a few cringey interviews with petty arguments. Very frustrating to watch the majority of people escape this cult yet still cling to Christianity...
Turning Red (2022)
My new favorite pixar film
Is Disney pandering to China? Probably. Did I still laugh constantly throughout only to tear up moments later? Absolutely. Pacing, graphics, story, music, character design ...all spot on. I don't think a Pixar film ever made me laugh out loud as often before. Glad to see Pixar still has it, and haters are always going to hate.
1883 (2021)
Are McGraw, Hill fans writing all the reviews?
The camerawork is so off putting that I feel like I'm watching a cheesy 80s film or a re-enactment clip from the history channel. 12 minutes in and I'm so annoyed at the constant zooming and hectic, rough transitions that I can't stand it. I loved Yellowstone and was hoping this would be similar but the cinematography is so awful it distracts from literally everything else. No thanks. Maybe people just like seeing their country music heroes in a TV role, but I don't get it. I'm assuming anyone giving this a 9 or 10 hasn't watched Deadwood. That is the only western TV show that deserves that score.
Betty (2020)
A Struggle to Get through
I'm glad I finished the first season as the cameo from High Maintenance was really neat. Maybe it's my inability to relate to gen Z, but I just found the show exhausting with such minor developments and slow progression of narrative.
Great News (2017)
I'm surprised anyone found this funny
The soundtrack was so distracting, felt like someone just dragged and dropped GarageBand loops and got paid for composing. The plot was so boring that I actually got a headache from frustration. Actors were so vanilla and flat it was painful. I'm most angry at the algorithms that suggested this.
Encanto (2021)
A Pixar Masterpiece
The last few Pixar films had their moments but didn't blow me away. This one however, has it all. Five minutes in and I was teary eyed, moved by the story and music. The design and personality of the characters, Lin-Manuel Miranda's music, the incredibly intricate details of the animation, the pacing and overall feel of the story... all of it was perfection.
Avenue 5 (2020)
Hated it, tried again recently and loved it
I was so annoyed with some of the minor characters that I gave up after the first episode. I'm so glad that I gave it another shot, as it got so much better as it went.
Small Town News KPVM . Pahrump (2021)
A charming perspective from small town America
A genuine team of hard-working newscasters made this show an incredible experience. I found myself constantly laughing out loud at the clever editing and silliness of the staff. Definitely recommend this gem as it somehow went under my HBO radar.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Typical off season series
Light give me strength... Had so much potential but shallow character development, a 1 min initial introduction to series lore, student film quality CGI, and action camera sequences that gave me motion sickness put me well off. Another series I was looking forward to but won't bother continuing.
Dexter: New Blood (2021)
I wanted to like it but it was terrible
I really wanted this to be good. But Cringe acting makes the show unwatchable. Top that up with bland, out of place music and a ridiculously predictable plot. Disturbed by the high rating.... Thanks but no thanks...
The Underground Railroad (2021)
Beautifully done but loses Steam
Held my attention until episode 8 where I believe the narrative pacing is sacrificed for dreamlike symbolism. Incredible acting and cinematography (though perhaps a bit too many lens flares) Recommended but if you are expecting a historically accurate drama, you've come to the wrong place.
Friends of Mine (2013)
Hoping for Crip Camp, instead found Chad Camp
Listening to two counselors whining about their first world problems like "why does God make it so hard for me to play professional baseball?" I found myself consistently gagging. It felt more like a dating show advertisement with slow mo, shirtless lake shots and other promo nonsense. Disappointing.
The Croods: A New Age (2020)
How is this rated lower than the original?!
The original was good but this had me laughing to the point of tears! It was beautifully done and I loved every minute of it. I was originally turned off by the trailer but I'm glad I gave it a chance.
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
Couldn't ask for much more, flawless Disney at its best.
I'm assuming the lower rating is from a heavy female, non white cast? Annoyance from Disney pandering to China? Who cares, one of the many reasons I no longer pay attention to ratings.
Storyline was great, animation and character design perfect. Loved every minute and cried like a baby at the end. Best animated film I've seen in a long time.
The Problem with Apu (2017)
Why didn't Aziz, Kal, or Hasan Make this?
Because their climbing careers didn't require any spotlight. Lots of unnecessary rage votes of 1 stars on here. The film isn't slow, dull, or poorly made. I didn't find Hari particularly funny, similar to most modern, over sensitive comics too afraid to step on toes or hurt feelings.
Seaspiracy (2021)
Target Market: Western Vegan (preaching to the choir)
This message needs to be presented in a way that is more digestible for Asian viewers if there is ever going to be substantial change. Cove meets Blackfish meets Whale Wars. Get Chinese and Indian influencers to make real change.
Dope Is Death (2020)
Eye opening reflection on 70s revolutionaries
A gripping, informative, and well put together documentary. Before watching, I thought acupuncture was nonsense. I also had no idea the black panthers (specifically Tupac's stepfather) built a detox center. We don't make revolutionaries like that anymore. Certainly worth the watch.
Two Gods (2020)
A somber examination of the Muslim streets of New Jersey
The African American Muslim is not often highlighted in film outside of Malcolm X and the 60s so it was refreshing to see a "modern black muslim" as the protagonist. The documentary drags a bit but it is emotionally gripping at the right intervals to hold viewer interest.
The Donut King (2020)
About so much more than donuts
Beautifully crafted, emotionally engaging, and filled in some of the blanks with my Cambodia in the 70s history. An Excellent Insight into an overlooked community. Powerful film that is certainly worth the 1.5 hour investment.
Hitman 2 (2018)
Great game with garbage cutscenes
Unacceptable for a AAA game in 2018 to have non animated cutscenes. Lazy
The Good Doctor: Hurt (2020)
This was the beginning of the end for me. Garbage.
The show was never one of my favorites, but the cringe and terrible plot of the last two episodes in season 3 was hard to finish. Who ever made these decisions should be fired. Awful, just awful ending to a decent season.
