Wu ming (2023)
A new hope
In fact, it was not until the third day of the Lunar New Year that I knew that this film directed by Cheng Er had been released. Although I was not very interested in the Spring Festival schedule, Cheng Er's last work, the wasted time, was very exciting. Therefore, in the contradiction, I chose to watch this movie in an IMAX cinema in a provincial capital. Next, I use the actor's name because this movie weakens the name of each character and makes the character anonymous.
First of all, if you are a person who has a high demand for the plot, the film may not meet your expectations. Because it didn't have any plot promotion for over half time. You may also think it is too fragmented. But if you recognize the work directed by Cheng Er, this film will not make you too satisfied. It's more like a metronome between peak and and trough, and my final score will be between 7-8.
This film does have a lot of favorite designs. First of all, the usage of different animal figures increases the thickness of the character. The most classic one is that an innocent mutton turns into mutton soup. This montage really contains a huge amount of information. During the air raid, the dog changed from a lively jumping to a fallen corpse. In fact, it does not require too much language to explain the cruelty of human nature. The barking of dogs in the interrogation room echoed the sound of the violin in the clubhouse, creating an uncomfortable sense of torture.
The second is a new treatment of spatiotemporal relationships. Those who are benevolent and wise see wisdom. Between space-time debris, the structure is complete. The explanation of the death of the Duke's brother is actually transmitted by connecting the name of the very subtle dog. The meeting between Wang Chuanjun's parents and Wang Yibo after arriving in Hong Kong is also sighing. However, after the fight between Tony Leung and Wang Yibo, when it comes to explaining the ending of each person, the plot becomes a little loose. I think this may be a concession to business and schedule, because the ability of the director's preface can continue to reach the final climax here, rather than in peace.
Then when I watched it, I was still very depressed, because I felt that there were more or less two or three shots or lines implying to the current political situation or the scene of Shanghai lockdown, and I couldn't remember anything clearly.
I still think that in addition to the unsatisfactory ending, this work is also a little too hard and not so natural and smooth. Regarding the yellow subtitles introducing time, some people think it is quite fragmented. I remember that the Battle of Algiers also presents the relationship of time and decentralized character design. And the play really reminds people of the classic train scenes of Grandmaster. Characters are the protagonists in their own environment, but they have become a conclusive way to cover the coffin in new stories or other people's mouths, which is reminiscent of Quentin's Pulp Fiction.
Although it is not perfect in all aspects, the relationships between this new animal expressionism and spatiotemporal relationships are enough to keep the film out of the trap.
Dune (2021)
The Rebirth of Space Opera
I used to not accept Hans Zimmer and various living composers until I saw Dune.
In 1968, 2001 Space Odyssey came out, and Kubrick jokingly joined the Blue Danube of the Strauss family and Also sprach Zarathustra of Richard Strauss. In 1977, the first Star Wars was released, which brought the entire film industry into commercialization, and created a new theme of space opera together with John Williams. It is obvious that there exists theme music for every important person and event, especially Darth Vader, which corresponds to the dominant motive in the opera. The dominant motive is the repetitive melody of one to two bars corresponding to each character. The band harmony and chants corresponding to the characters all indicate a certain character image.
Objectively speaking, as a mixer, he does lack the talent of conductor and composer to control the delicate emotions, making it difficult to create gorgeous or poignant themes such as Darth Vader themes and Hedwig themes. His creations on the Dune alone make people think about whether these sentences are merely functional or repetitive. However, Paul's theme is brought by the playing of tubular instruments in the movie and the shouting of vocals, as if it were Zimmer's attempt at the emotional part of mixing and synthesizing. An example of this part is Leaving Caladan in the original soundtrack. This style of music also appeared many times in subsequent key plots of Paul.
The accompaniment from the synthesizer began to have a certain emotional core, and its achievement and shock was no less than that of the movie's entry into the rare space opera movies since Star Wars. The emergence of religious colors in the movie, such as the soundtrack Premonition, on the other hand, also returns to the religious form of the early stage of classical music, I have to say that it is a clever way of soundtracking.
Every film critic will not be parsimonious for
beautiful words. On the whole, I feel that it is on the same level as Star Wars. Compared with Space Odyssey, although there is a similar movie-watching experience, it still lacks a bit of detached imagination.
Joshua: Teenager vs. Superpower (2017)
Glory To Hong Kong
I live in China mainland, and I watched this movie in 2021. My roommate during my undergraduate study and I planned to go to Hong Kong to support the freedom movement and were proud of being members.
The COVID-19 is the biggest fig leaf for Communist bandits. Even if something big happened in Hong Kong, the domestic attention has been diverted. The population decline in the country and the deteriorating political environment have also been obscured by the national pride that the seemingly good isolation policy has brought about effective treatment of the epidemic. The banning of Apple Daily and the prohibition of demonstrations seem to sing hymns to the 100th anniversary of the founding of the party. However, the environment in mainland China and Hong Kong is getting worse. Although we are a little desperate for the current freedom movement, we still hope that the Hong Kong freedom movement will succeed so that some of the sleeping mainlanders will wake up and realize that they are being oppressed by the Communist bandits.
Thanks to Netflix for the great documentary, and I wish glory to HK.
Fa yeung nin wah (2000)
Eastern Romance
This film is full of Chinese aesthetics. Maggie Cheung replaced 27 different cheongsams. Liang Chaowei and Maggie Cheung repeatedly walked up and down the stairs. The story is simple, but their exquisite expressions and movements and Zhang Shuping's praiseable clips make every shot of the film worthy of repeated play.
The soundtrack is also very good, mainly composed of jazz, but also in a different style, some traditional Chinese music and Barsano of Ono Lisa.
Although the storyline is weak, it not only embodies the delicate and intense emotions of the film, but also reflects the characteristics of the director Wang Jiawei's works. This work is his sixth work. He completed the transition from a description of the love prodigal to a description of the person obsessed with a particular love. In his early works, emotions are like being dispersed in the air, released from one person, but always ignored by the object. In such works, there is often no fixed comedy or tragic ending, because the focus is placed on the emotions floating in the air. His work after "In the Mood for Love" will put the emotional focus on a fixed relationship. These works began to show some common romantic elements in popular love movies, beginning to appear and specific storylines.
"If I have a ticket, will you follow me?" The timeline of the previous work of the film was emotionally driven, and the timeline of subsequent works was driven by the plot. This work is obviously a combination. It embodies a very integrated promotion, where the emotions of the male and female owners meet here. Eastern love is more like a game, and active people tend to be more passive. Guessing the other's mind is often the only way to win in a subtle emotional game. Here, we need to pay tribute to Wang Jiawei, because as Zhang Manyu said when she received the award, she realized what she was doing when she saw the film. The actors and the director made the movie overwhelmingly marvelous!
