I love the movie. BUT, it's not really much of a story.
First up the voices, everyone killed it. Despite Chris Pratt really not sounding like Mario, he absolutely nailed it and showed that the trailers really did a disservice for his voice. Jack Black absolutely nailed Bowser and stole the show from everyone, in very Bowser like fashion and Anya Taylor-Joy, while a very unique peach, was a hit for me as her voicing nailed the balance between a princess and a badass.
Music... had some problems. The original scores scores based on Mario were brilliant, keeping the Mario flare in there was a must and I know damn well I'm gonna listen to the soundtrack as some of it was perfect for the scenes, even Bowser's song. Unfortunately, parts of the movie didn't get the memo. "I Need a Hero," does work for the montage, I will die on this post, but if you want to convince me something like, "Take on Me," was reasonable, then I'm very sorry.
The story has issues. Things kind of just happen. There are 2 moments that I'd classify as story in the whole movie. The 30 min mark and essentially the belly of the beast moment. One explains character and the other explains how frustrated someone is that they can't do things. The story just couldn't handle juggling +4 characters well enough.
The Fun stuff is great. As a Mario fan, there's nothing more cool than seeing iconic enemies, places or items like the rocket barrel from DKC, the DK crew, Odyssey and even plot points that refer to other games. It's the most fun I've had in a movie since Sonic 1 & 2 and that says a lot.
The movie could've nailed it through and through if it had more scenes. More time to finish off arcs, time to slow down and time to breath. The movie was basically going at Kaizo speed, it never had time to explain itself and that's what really stuck out the most.
