Gomorrah: Episode #5.10 (2021)
Appropriate ending for a gripping series
This is as much redemption as these 2 mesmerising anti-heroes could ever get. I hope now both these terrific actors will turn to lighter material, but they did themselves proud here. Sure, it became a very violent soap opera since Ciro turned out to be alive 2 seasons ago, but I wish more shows would take as many creative chances.
Puoi baciare lo sposo (2018)
Genius move casting Gomorrah mob boss in this light-hearted yet thoughtful comedy
I saw this confection on a flight home to London. I'm a huge fan of Salvatore Esposito from his gripping, gritty role as mob boss Genny on "Gomorrah". Genius move to cast him as a cute gay guy marrying his equally adorable boyfriend and soulmate. The film was a delight: from the 2 adorable leads seeking their family's approval to the gentle, wise, accepting small-town priest, with a nod to Pope Francis's modern approach to gays, the quirky flatmates (including a hilarious cross-dressing bus-driver) and the well-meaning but pompous father of the groom whose classy, determined wife forces him to live up to the high ideals he pushes on the town as their high-minded mayor. I don't know the original Broadway stage play that inspired this movie, but I love how the director changed made the story politically and socially relevant. A must-see but not because it's worthy. So many laugh out loud moments. The father complaining about musicals being silly: A little gem!
Passengers (2016)
absorbing, superb cast with great chemistry
My husband caught this on TV while I was away on a trip and highly recommended it. He knows much better than the critics. I loved it! This film made me take Chris Pratt seriously as an actor. He handles the solitude scenes brilliantly as poignantly as Tom Hanks in "Castaway" or Richard Chamberlain as the wrongly imprisoned Edmond Dantes in "The Count of Monte Cristo". Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence have great chemistry. Calling the heroine "Aurora" like Sleeping Beauty was a nice touch. Lose yourself in the haunting music, story and special effects. Enjoy!
Civic Duty (2006)
provocative film
Peter Krause is good in this film. You want to like him because he is handsome. But you realize he is not very bright and is a prejudiced American, so you can't like him. The Egyptian actor who plays the maybe terrorist is compelling, he must be great in other films. Richard Schiff as the FBI agent is quite good. The actress who plays the wife is very pretty and perky and tries to keep things light - why would she be with this lunatic, but maybe that is a good point - people love all kinds of people. I saw the screening at the Tribeca Film Festival. Peter Krause mentioned this film as being a bit like Scorsese's TAXI DRIVER. VERY fitting, because that film showed an everyman character, albeit a very dangerous one, who in that case was paranoid because he returned to NYC having served and killed in Vietnam. The 1970s were a time of paranoia. Today I would not say we are as paranoid. Yet we are at war, and maybe we should be paranoid. If you think of this film as a modern TAXI DRIVER, it is interesting. Even if you don't, it's interesting. Krause is not afraid to play a character who is both appealing and unappealing. His character is handsome but very boring, like a lot of Americans. The actor himself seems like a nice and earnest person, which helps his roles. The excellent Egyptian actor should be in more films.
