After Life (2019)
Monotone and borderline cheesy
I'm a big fan of the Office and love Ricky Gervais' comedy stunts.
After Life, however, is the epitome of boredom.
Diving in, I was super-excited about it, thinking it has great potential to develop into a poignant piece that will both amuse and challenge.
What it turned out to be, however, was far from poignant or moving. After Life is packed with dry, overused jokes that rarely land and is simply a repetitive pile of self-pitying mess.
Horrible. I somehow endured till the final episode, only to be greeted with one of the cheesiest endings ever, when the main character Tony decides to become a better person through a series of uninspiring, lame events.
Six episodes have felt like an eternity and After Life has cemented itself as the absolute worst dark comedy show I've ever seen in my life.
Vratice se rode (2007)
Tragicomedy at its best
I don't know about storks but I sure will be returning to this show again.
Matter of fact, this is my second time watching it and I'm loving it all the same.
As a Croat, I hate to say it but Serbs are 10 leagues ahead of us when it comes to TV shows and films.
Vratice se Rode is a perfect example. What a rollercoaster of laughs and tears! Spectacular series with a healthy amount of twists, brilliant writing, impressive acting and then some more.
A natural blend of humour and art, as it should be, with iconic scenes that will be remember for decades ("Wh*res killed an honest man!").
The starring heroes form a triangle with all characters caught up in their own dreams. Some are trapped in the pursuit of richness (Dule), some in pursuit of love (Svaba), and some don't even know what they're after (Ekser).
All three are brilliant actors with widely acclaimed appearances and one of them recently lost a 3-year old son, a tragic ordeal nobody deserves.
Thank you for this series. Clearly a lot of work has gone into it and everything checks out. The plot is a tad slow but gets you there, the cinematography is more than solid and the soundtrack is beyond spectacular.
But most importantly, the human element is just there, man. When Ekser opened up about feeling as if "being happy just isn't him", it hit hard. Then, I fell of my chair again when Dule opened his mouth.
Altogether this is what TV is all about. A series that challenges, engages, entertains, and is in essence a mockery of itself; one that leaves you guessing whether you should cry or laugh. Or, what the hell, you might as well do both - that's life anyway.
Mind Field (2017)
10/10 across all spheres
I've only seen two episodes so far but I'm already hooked beyond my mind with this show! Michael, the host, whose Youtube series I loved strongly throughout the years, really makes 20+ minutes fly away as you learn stuff that quite literally shape our daily lives.
Filmed to a high standard, produced with heavy effort reflecting in show's quality, we are led into the depths of new cognition, by Michael (now finally recognized for being a super-talented brainiac he is) leading the show in a chilled, information-packed and comical manner, never failing to captivate your imagination with new facts while cracking you up in the process.
Many thanks from a massive fan and I hope you reach the heights you deserve, Michael. Keep our minds in your field.
