The Little Mermaid (2023)
Could've been worse...
The Little Mermaid was my favorite movie growing up and I must've seen it at least 1000 times. I didn't dislike the his remake, in fact there are a lot of things I loved.
The things I loved:
I loved the way Hailey captured the essence in her portrayal of Ariel. She was great.
How Haley made the songs her own. The subtle changes brought them back to life for me
Loved Melissa Mcarthy as Ursula. She was fantastic.
Loved the use of color and how all the mermaid's fins were different..
I loved the additional scenes where we got to know Prince Eric a little more. LOVED all of the scenes where Eric and Ariel were getting to know each other.
Things I didn't love:
Sebastian, scuttle and flounder. They looked lifeless and creepy. They could've gave them bigger eyes or something.... It's cgi. They could've done better with that. Not sure how... but it felt a little like watching a puppet show meets taxidermy.
Scuttlebutt.
At times acting seemed flat. Plastic. Pulled me out of the movie.
I feel like they could've done more with the visuals. More "magic" I guess? The CGI was lacking.
It wasn't bad. Just lacking.
The Other Lamb (2019)
Eerie, moody piece
I enjoyed this movie. I like movies that allow you to piece together the story. The visuals are haunting. It was like midsommer meets handmaids tale. I'm surprised that it has so many negative reviews. The lead actress was awesome. I am not great at watching movies without being distracted but I was engrossed throughout the entire film. If you like movies like midsommer, witch, and/or Mother! I would recommend giving this one a shot. I but if you're more into less artsy films, and that are cut and dry, this isn't for you.
The Fear of 13 (2015)
Love this film
I've watched/listened to this documentary so many times I've lost count. This man is a gifted storyteller and will keep you engaged throughout the entire film. It's BS the film maker screwed him over so badly. ( I have listened to a bunch of his interviews, follow him on Facebook etc and he was not compensated fairly last I checked) but it doesnt change my opinion on the film. His stories are amazing and captivating. One of my favorites.
Them (2021)
INTENSE
This series is so disturbing. After episode 5 I couldn't even sleep because the scenes were literally haunting my dreams. This isn't for the squeamish. It reminds me of Jordan Peele's work. Twisted, unsettling and sticks with you for awhile. I definitely feel like it's worth the watch!
Cats (2019)
I don't know
I don't HATE it... My son loves it so we've been listening to it a lot. I love musicals but this CGI is disturbing. I keep trying to think of another way they could've done it to make it less upsetting but I cannot come up with anything that wouldn't ruin the point of the show. If they used ONLY CGI instead of actors, then we'd miss out on the dancing. If they did only costumes, we'd lose the fantasy and it would seem dated... I mean, I didn't pay attention to it until I heard Jennifer Hudson's performance and that's what hooked me in because every scene that she takes part in is truly moving. Her story is heartbreaking and you can hear it in her voice and see it in her eyes. But the CGI fur, ears and tails meshed with the human bodies and with the constant switching from being on all fours and being bipedal makes my brain feel like it's misfiring. The parts I love I really do LOVE but the rest is so damn confusing and distracting. I think they may have achieved what they were going for... The original musical was bizarre as well. I don't mind bizarre... But this feels like it took it a step further and when there was nowhere left to go and it walked right off a cliff.
Bottom line: if you like musicals, or weird movies, I do recommend you watch it because it is an experience, albeit at times, a disturbing one, still has moments that are really moving. It's nonsensical and weird but definitely memorable.
Might give you some strange dreams though. 😂
Love & Other Drugs (2010)
Great movie
Anne Hathaway and Jake gylenhaal are great in this. I'm not that into rom-coms because of the cheesy fillers and what not. There are a few hokey characters but I think part of the reason I like this one so much is because the acting is so good and the story is too. I'm docking a couple of stars only because the music is excruciating at times. That ohhh uhhhh mmmm nonsense every time they have a moment is not only irritating, its pretty distracting. Its funny how much music can affect a scene. It was hard to focus on anything else that was happening. Other than that, I loved it.
Leaving Neverland (2019)
So heartwrenching
Until now, I hadn't seen a documentary that was able to convey how complex the emotions are to victims of pedophilia. There are so many layers and this story really peels each one back. So many people ask "why didn't he/she tell someone? How could this have been possible" these brave men come forward after decades had passed, bare their souls, tell the entire story... Every detail. If you have ever been sexually abused, you know how difficult that is. This documentary is tragic, but beatifully done. I am so moved by their bravery and even though abuse is a horrific thing to have to live with, this program could really change lives.
There are moments in the interviews that i became ill because of the details... But i am so taken back by the bravery and capability for them to say it all out loud. Devastating story, but it couldn't have been told in a better way.
Mother! (2017)
Wow!
This movie isn't going to be for everyone. This movie is a representation. A bit of an abstract piece. Not for people that cannot understand or appreciate symbolism, This is a thought provoking film and I loved it.
Jennifer Lawrence is amazing as always and I felt her pain. Oh such a great film. But viewer beware, there are some pretty gnarly scenes and if you take them literally, you'll be sick for sure.
I had an inkling of the premise because i watch everything with subtitles and it kind of gave everyone "titles" but oh my god... This was so deep and intense. To put every thing out in a such a raw, gruesomely poetic way... A real eye opener. I appreciate the interpretation of religion and how humanity is stomping all over everything that should be cherished all for the sake of religion and rituals.
The Blackwell Ghost (2017)
Convincing enough
I liked this movie because it wasn't over acted and seemed pretty genuine. Enough that I just combed through my watch history to find it.(i forgot the title) it want the best, but it was entertaining and didn't seem to be super cheesy and phony like most of these kinds of movies.
Life Below Zero (2013)
Great show but ...
I am addicted to this show but I have to take breaks. Not because of the cast, but the close ups between scenes coupled with the music almost seems like the director and editors are trying to portray these incredible, brave and admirable people as demented cooks. Why all of the creepy sound effects and music???? It almost ruins it for me. I love the Hailstones. Every cast member is individually awesome but something about the native point of view and them being a family with children is so intriguing to watch.
