Mad Heidi (2022)

It's like Blubberella but can be watched sober
13 January 2023
I find this masterpiece very similar to the cult classic Blubberella, with the difference that Mad Heidi is also watchable when you are sober. If you like this genre, I can also recommend Yoga Hosers. The horror-esque, bloody scenes were really well made: They probably had an expert on that. But the fight scenes lacked a little. It would've been much funnier if the warrior nuns had been able to do kung fu, with scenes that resemble a 90's Hong Kong wuxia movie. Mad Heidi mostly exaggerated Swiss cultural traits, with some exceptions: I heard that the rejection of citizenship applications is really done the way depicted.

Boring
9 January 2023
Even if we disregard the claims of the creators about the historicity of this miniseries (which is clearly false), or that it is an utter waste of taxpayer money (since its entire budget of $4m is state-financed, with a nearly zero box office), it is also badly written, features mediocre acting and is terribly boring!

These kinds of idealistic series or movies were typical in communist Hungary between 1950 and 1980. But those at least had some viewers, as there was only one television channel in the country.

The script is completely braindead. Lacks any character development. The actors were chosen according to their loyalty towards government officials. It doesn't feature any of the famed and generally accepted Hungarian actors, since those are regarded to be too "liberal" who "cannot be trusted". Just look at the fact that one of the main actors Balázs Bölkény attended the same faculty on the same university as half of the current government: The faculty of law on the Pázmány Péter Catholic University. And this is the guaranteed recipe for bad quality products: contraselection!

The best series I found lately
30 April 2020
It's not easy to stay entertained during the Corona-virus pandemic. I've seen many fantasy series lately, like the Legacies, but those were not even close in originality. I'm not much into women, but it's cool how freely this series show lesbian relationships. Another thing that is special about this show, is that it's showing the Vietnam war era of the US from another perspective, translated to the world of women and to a domestic conflict, instead of a proxy-war.

Silent Youth (2012)

We spoke less on the first dates
2 July 2019
This movie reminded me of the time when I started dating guys 200 years ago. How to put it: While fighting the internalized homophobia, it's not easy to have a relaxed conversation with someone who also hasn't come out to anyone. Did we have a personality? Probably, but it was hidden. What is unusual in this movie's story is that despite the blocked interpersonal communication and the obvious mental health issues of Kirill, they still stick together. It doesn't end in a one-night stand as it often does in reality at this level of self-acceptance.

Still the first reason why I liked this movie is not the realistic display of silence in our daily lives, but the beautiful visuals. Dawn and sunrise.

Chronically boring
14 August 2017
This movie mainly operates with the classic clichés of student geniuses and eccentric billionaires, but somehow it can't make them work. The series has no real mysteries, no twists and no character development.

Around 80% of the episodes are spent on conversations, which doesn't make sense at all. And I'm not talking about intentional nonsensical elements, which can be an efficient form of expression when used properly, but about the lack of understanding about state and intelligence affairs, or about the implications which would accompany a catastrophic event like that.

The actors are also bad. You cannot sit back, relax and get immersed into the story even for a second, because the actors' play is very unnatural, you can always feel that a camera is directed at them, or that they recite a memorized text.
