The Mandalorian (2019)
Overrated
I must have completely missed something with this show that flies in the face of all the glowing reviews. With so many high scores I had been looking foward to watching it since it was released particularly with Pedro Pascal in it, but am totally disappointed. I have stopped half way through S01 E05 - can't watch any more. In my opinion, poor story, poor acting, average graphics, silly background music, too sanitised. Aimed at a younger audience perhaps? Seems to be what so many of the Star Wars shows have become since Disney took over. I loved the first three star wars movies that came out - acting, story, character development. Won't watch any more of Mando.
And I have to wonder, how many reviews are bots or whatever. 6's and 7's i understand. 8 maybe, but 9's and 10's? 10 for a perfect movie? What score would they have given A New Hope or Return of the Jedi or Empire Strikes Back? 50?
Westworld (2016)
Review for Season 2
Firstly, I loved season 1 so i have kept going and just finished Season 2, which i also thoroughly enjoyed. Great acting, casting. Production including props, costumes, scenery and writing all superb.
THought provoking like season 1 on various matters is ongoing. Many a discussion has been had with fellow viewers at home regarding morality and psychosocial issues with the concepts of the show.
Just one thing i disliked about Season 2 was Maeve's acquired ability to command other hosts via telepathy. Ok, it's science fiction, but telepathy?? The verbal command I can understand but not telepathy - silly. Apart from that part of the storyline, the rest of the show was thoroughly entertaining and I'm looking foward watching season 3.
Triada (2023)
Waste of time
Inspired by true events?? Ha the only thing that's true is that three triplets fortuitously met some years later - three men. See the movie "Three Identical Strangers"
For me,Tryptich was a waste of time. Poorly written, poorly acted, and unnecessarily long sex scenes. Apart from Matie Perroni being pleasing to the eye - the only reason l gave this movie any stars at all (but an unconvincing actor especially in the sex scenes),
the rest was too stretched for reality.
I always find it amusing how movie shorts get away with stating that it's based on true events when the only true or actual event might only be the tiniest snippet.
I must say though, the dubbing in these non-english movies probably don't do the movie proper justice.
Mary Bryant (2005)
Lots of factual errors
The show was entertaining, so I guess on that, it is something of a success.
But, I read the book , and followed up with some private research because I had never heard of Mary Bryant or what she had notoriously achieved.
But the movie is riddled with "artistic licence". Way too much for my liking,
And such a pity because no-one in my circle of friends or acquaintances has heard of her which is a pity because in my opinion, what happened is part of history that merits more awareness in the Australian public, howver notorious, and almost falling into the category of folkore something slightly along the lines of Ned Kelly but not quite, So for a program that can offer some education to the public about our history, it falls dismally short.
I don't encourage people to watch it, unless you are well aware that there are numerous flaws.
Read about her at least on Wikipedia and learn how fascinating her story truly is/was.Or better still read the book.
Mother! (2017)
waste of time
I went to the movies recently with three other people with tickets we purchased at an attractively discounted price. Which movie? Upon reading reviews we settled on "Mother". Just a nudge beyond 2 hours long, and one of the greatest waste of 2 hours for a long time.
What on earth is this about? I hated it, as did my fellow movie goers. And then, in that post movie discussion room - the men's' toilet - all were scoffing at what they had just watched. So, the next day, onto google I went and read the reviews again, and found a website that explained it all.
So it's an allegory to certain events, set to a modern semi-horror movie. OK, great idea, but in my opinion, surely there are better ways to make allegories. Hopeless if the allegories are so tucked away that I have to research it online to make sense of it. OK, so now it does, and I look back at so many scenes and i find myself thinking, "oh OK, so that's what that was about". And I have found myself saying that so many times about so many scenes.
But in the end, as a movie, it seemed so incredibly disjointed and devoid of understanding. To watch the movie as a standalone story it failed. Sure, make your allegories, but weave them into a movie so that the movie flows, is enjoyable, and you don't have to research to find out what the point of it is!! In my opinion, it failed miserably as a movie for the movie goer who simply wants to watch a movie to escape life for two or so hours. Forget it if you want watch a movie that has another take on good-beats-bad, love-conquers-all, or an exploration of human relationships in all their forms - failed, successful, homosexual, marriage, parenthood, etc, etc. in whatever movie genre - science fiction, romance, horror, crime etc.
Reading the 'explanation', sure, it makes a bit more sense, but if one wasn't versed in the meaning before the movie, it was simply a bundle of scenes put together and you would come out thinking what everyone else did - what was that about? None of the reviews I read before watching it would reveal much about the plot out of respect of spoiling it for some people, so, out of respect, neither shall I. But, I will say, that had I read the plot and the explanation I would have been a lot less scathing of it. So in my opinion, read the plot. The movie will make a lot more sense when you watch it. I can't see how reading the plot and allegories beforehand can possibly spoil this abomination of a movie.
The allegories were too camouflaged. If one has to resort to the web to work out what the hell I just watched, then the movie fails in my opinion. And just how many people will bother to go online to gain an understanding of what they just saw? As for the rave reviews, honestly I wonder if people get so blown away by movies just because they are off center and mystical and contorted in what they are trying to say. Production wise , and acting wise, I have no complaints there.
For me, the only scenes worth watching were the shots of Jennifer Lawrence's adorable seemingly perpetual teenage good looks and the one frontal shot of her wearing a see-through nightshirt. Very tasteful and teasingly hinting at a lovely female form.
Apart from that, I hated "Mother". I would never watch it again. Understanding it or not. My three other friends were just as scathing, as were the few people I had the pleasure of briefly discussing the movie with over a few moments of liberation post movie. In summary, the worst movie I've seen in years. And pardon some of the puns in my review. That might make a bit more sense after you've seen the movie.
