The High Chaparral: Stinky Flanagan (1969)
The Riddler Shines !
Always liked the comedic episodes . This is one of the best .
Frank Gorshin , in my opinion , was an underrated actor throughout his career . Known mainly for his Batman appearances, he popped up as a guest star on many shows , most notably to me , on Combat. The best impressionist of his time , ( sorry Rich Little ) , he was a man of many talents . He shines in this role as the camel caretaker. Creating mischief as he goes , he interfaces with several of the main characters , with an Irish accent , and all turns out in the end , in a fitting ending for the story.
As in most of the episodes, Cameron Mitchell and Henry Darrow are center stage also , shining as usual. But Frank Gorshin Carrie's the episode.
The A-Team: The Spy Who Mugged Me (1986)
Shaken , not stirred.
While I didn't hear those words , I certainly expected them. Murdock get to show off some imitator chops , does a nice job. The Ross girls ( not Bond) could be Bond girls. Probably my favorite episode of the final season.
I expected a little better battle between Mr. T and Mr. Tanaka.
You could sense Face's disappointment with the role he ended up with. No Bond , and an Alex Karras lockout on a balcony in bad weather.
Even the villain looked like the Bond nemesis from several of the movies. Just good fun.
Needed a laser beam threat to make it complete.
Not the only time Murdock got the girl , but certainly my favorite.
Emergency!: Survival on Charter #220 (1978)
What ?
Looked like a pilot for a new series! I know Robert Fuller was done with the series at this point . Troupe and London were good as ever. Dr Morton ( Pinkard , who should've received full billing by this point) proved he was a capable second lead doctor. The paramedics, don't even remember their names. Now 4 stars , that's for each minute Mantooth and Tighe were on screen. I don't know what else they must've been involved in , but weren't allowed to be involved here. As usual, when on screen, they were at the top of their game. Just were not on screen enough. And no Cap, Chet , Marco , etc. So disappointing. Glad I finally saw it , at least got to say goodbye to squad 51. But won't watch it again .
Quigley Down Under (1990)
This ain't Dodge City
Probably not fair for me to review, because it is one of my all time favorites. Of course, must start with Tom Selleck. He's had a wonderful career. I first saw him as Lance White on Rockford Files. But somehow I always wanted more. From there to Magnum/Sacketts/Jesse Stone/Bluebloods, et all. But somehow still wanted more.
A movie with quotes on par with Clint and the Duke ,lasting forever, said so perfectly by Tom. Great role, great performance.
Alan Rickman , perfect performance of the "Bond" type villain. He had a string of good villain roles very close together. This the best.
Laura San...a very good Crazy Cora.
And a wonderful score that ranks up with the best .
Still waiting for a sequel that will never come.one of my top ten westerns. " This ain't Dodge City" Give it a look.
Willow (2022)
Why not?
Not sure of all the negativity for this. I've enjoyed the first four . Obviously would've been great to have Val Kilmer , but not possible at this time. Warwick Davis has been great. I like the comedy that comes in every now and then. Not caring about how long it takes the relationships to develop, just like the series. Not calling anyone out who doesn't like it , but give it a chance. I know it's not a great review, but just felt I needed to defend it as I could. Will struggle to get required number of letters , but you could tell that earlier. So , again , give it a chance , you might be surprised. Whew.
Noel Next Door (2022)
Nice twist on a couple of classics.
To me a nice new take on classics " Shop around the corner" and " You've got mail". And vaguely remember another in that line . No matter , the two leads pull it off nicely. Not sure about the son. Never bought into him.
Supporting cast not as evident , at least to me , as in most Hallmark movies.
Nice to have some classical music interludes .
Miss the normal , beautiful Hallmark scenery , only the skating segment even comes close , but I can live with that.
Not only new "family" networks , but now even national networks and several streaming networks showing Christmas movies. My dvr will run out of space .
All in all , definitely worth a look.
Adam-12: The Search (1971)
Interesting story line
A bit unusual for Adam 12 . Malloy on his own , unable to do much. An anxious Reed , the only hope. His " gut feeling " saves the day . My biggest complaint on the entire episode....no way Little John was a killer , and no way he'd leave Malloy. Actually pretty incredible the way other shows affect your feelings for a character on another show. Been that way , I didn't like Colonel Lard until I saw him as an out and out good guy in another show.
And the actual saving of Pete was pretty ingenious. I really liked his smile after he hears Reed say he's found him. Only thing that could've made this better.... Why DeSoto and Gage assisting in the rescue, of course.
Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.: Goodbye Camp Henderson, Hello Sergeant Carter (1969)
Fond memories
Hard to compare an anti war dramedy with a out and out comedy. A nice run , good way to end it. Some great guest stars along the way , including Carol Burnett , Don Rickles Sid Melton and a pre Mash Father Mulcahy himself . Ronnie Schell was missed when attempting his own series , returned to act as a go between toward the end of the series. Frank Sutton was consistently good in the role . And the few times Jim got to sing. Nothing more needs to be said about that. In his dress blues , belting out To Dream the Impossible Dream . Wow. A kinder , gentler time . Good show with a few great episodes.
Rio Grande (1950)
Wonderful Introduction to a great movie pair
Hadn't seen this in quite awhile. After watching it , it moved up my list of John Wayne movies. I hadn't remembered the amount of music , and loved it. Don't think I recognized Ken Curtis last time I saw it. Although I knew he was member of Sons of the Pioneers, never realized how good his voice was. Researched Peter Ortiz , didn't know anything about his various army services. Maureen O' Hara was simply beautiful. Her emotional scenes with John Wayne were heartfelt. Victor McLagen playing his normal , wonderful character . Harry Carey Jr , and Ben Johnson always wonderful. Claude Jarman was a mild surprise. John Ford use of scenery . Normal , which with him means tremendous. Duke was the star , but entire cast shined. Is it now in my top 5 Duke movies? An emphatic " YO".
Rhumba Rhythm at the Hollywood La Conga (1939)
Old school fun !
Maybe not big stars , but fun nonetheless. Pick them out. Especially the woman at back of Conga line. She was definitely noticeable. George Murphy actually looked like he was enjoying himself. Good fun all around.
Leverage: Redemption (2021)
Gang is (almost) all back
Stumbled across it accidentally. Yee Haw ! Noah fitting in well. Just getting to other new member. Don't care , just seeing the 4 together brought a smile to my face. So glad it's back.
Olympic Dreams (2019)
Not a medalist, but a personal best!
Very touching romantic comedy , with entirely believable performances by all involved. Added plus of being filmed in the Olympic Village.
The Proud Ones (1956)
Very good western
Stern sheriff facing opposition from most of town. Ryan good as always , Hunter also. Brennan slightly different character than his normal deputy role. Mayo , gorgeous as ever. And one of best cast of well known (recognized) extras I can remember. Enjoyable.
The Red Skelton Show: Smithers And McGurk Play The Patsies (1955)
Smithers and McGurk rule !
Not sure how Mary McCarthy ( McCarty?) didn't become bigger star of era. The "Dance the Charleston With Me" is awesome. Great show of Red's.
The Legend of 5 Mile Cave (2019)
Fun in the west
In a similar vein to Second Hand Lions , this is a touching story of young lad on an adventure. Always liked Adam Baldwins work . Filming locations are wonderful , filming itself is well done. Shooter ,Tommy and Josie unknown to me prior , but they enjoyed their performances. Jill Wagner very good. Nice relaxing western. Very touching. Loved it !
Artemis Fowl (2020)
Didn't read books
But enjoyed the movie. . Certainly hope there's a sequel. Guess I'm going to have to read the books. Sorry , but liked the characters , suspense and action. Hope there's a sequel.
Ercole sfida Sansone (1963)
Could be my favorite of the 60's sword and sandal!
You need to just sit back , enjoy the lines , the scenery , and the mash up of heroes. Great fun.
The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch (2020)
Mow the grass
A good start. All those cameras not doing much good. Trim some trees also.
Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made (2020)
No failure unless there's no sequel!
Wonderful off beat hardboiled detective "noir". Great supporting cast , assuming his first role , but Timmy Failure, was great. Wallace Shawn in a bad role , inconceivable! Craig Robinson perfect as the understanding counselor. Kyle Bornheimer a very good turn as the man taking meter maid to new level. All the kids are very good. Well done Disney!
Darrow & Darrow: Witness to Murder: A Darrow mystery (2019)
Always good to see Tom
I'm one that cares less about plot than the actors involved. Love the 3 main , and the intro of new policewoman is excellent.
Dawn at Socorro (1954)
Best Rory Calhoun Movie
Had never seen it , but really enjoyed it. Rory Calhoun could act. Not your normal shoot em up. And previous reviewer mentioned resemblance to George Clooney. Spot on. Brian good bad guy as always. One of many unknown great character actors.
The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019)
Go See It !
Amazing , endearing , heartwarming story. All leads are great. Will try to see it again at theaters , if nothing else , auto buy when it comes out .
Secondhand Lions (2003)
Two greats lead the way !
Great family story with humor and tears. Duvalls speech to teen tough a highlight . Just watched again after a number of years , remenbered how good it was. Bouncing from modern day to the brothers youthful days( real or not ?) , makes for amazing story. Christian Kane ( Leverage , Librarians among others) , a good fit as young Duvall. All in all , endearing story.
