Timeless (2016)
Formulaic and poor writing
Other than that it's ok, good production quality.
The lead Abigail is good, 2 male leads less so.
But none of them are helped by the script.
Melancholia (2011)
Really slow, terrible camera shaking the whole way, ultimately pointless
First the camera shaking, it is of course a style of sorts, but it doesn't add anything when its every shot all the time (save perhaps 3 mins of long shots). I do personally have a problem where this kind of shaking actually affects my inner ear and makes me motion sick. So for me the film is actually unwatch-able without a motion sickness pill. Even after taking one though it wasn't watch- able with the amount of constant shaking for me at least. I did persevere until about an hour and a quarter into it before deciding it was junk and really not worth it.
You could watch this film on double speed without loosing much at all. It is tediously slow moving. But what's worse is that its ultimately pointless.
The whole film feels just like a meaningless indulgence of the film makers fantasies for the sake of it.
On a positive note the acting is good.
Kick-Ass (2010)
Soft kick in the head
I purposefully try not to read too much about a movie if I might go and see it. I don't want to risk spoiling my experience by taking any preconceived ideas along with me. This was the case for Kick-Ass, I'd read some thing about it being something like "self aware" or something to this affect, whatever it was it appeared to mean to me that it was not a corny comedy directed at "the average" teenager but something a bit deeper. So I didn't read much more because I had decided that I might go see it. Admittedly this strategy hasn't worked out for me before as well.
Today I went to see Kick-Ass. Extreme violence perpetrated by a pre-pubescent girl peppered with foul language doesn't really impress me. The post-pubescent, but clearly lagging behind in the maturity department, behind me seemed to find these parts "funny", as did a fair percentage of the audience. I'll give the audience the benefit of the doubt though, often embarrassment is covered up by a burst of laughter.
Was this film that bad? No it wasn't terrible, it was just not very, or even much good either.
GamerZ (2005)
A good watch
Definitely worth seeing. There is a lot of rubbish out there generally. A big budget and big hype certainly do not make a good movie but they make the general public and, even I am ashamed to say, me, more likely to see them. Which is unfortunate not least because movies like Gamerz can easily be overlooked.
The story does not involve complex characters, what it does have is believable and honest characters that are easy to relate to. Its a feel good story which doesn't try or pretend to be more. It's easy to watch with some genuinely funny moments. While obviously not produced with a big budget, It's well crafted.
Wicker Park (2004)
"Good guys" and "bad guys"
Why is it that in so many Hollywood films I am routing for the "bad guy"?
This is one of those films. The "good guy" is supposedly so wronged by the "bad guy", the good guy is of course entitled to feel this way because he is naturally without fault or just enough fault to appear human. Not. The good guy in this is deceitful from the start and yet he gets off very lightly in the end.
The plot is mostly transparent. I am left with the impression that there was a reasonable idea here for a story which could have been carried off far better.
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999)
a real waste of time
In the beginning I hated South Park the series. Much later on I think I watched part of a recent episode on Youtube and actually enjoyed it. It had been so long since the early series that I thought maybe I had misinterpreted those episodes so I got hold of the series from the beginning but soon found the early stuff to be puerile rubbish. I didn't realise this movie was in the early days of South Park otherwise I would not have wasted the time watching it. Its terrible. Somewhere much further on in the series South Park got a lot better, really intelligent and funny. But don't bother with the early stuff or this "film".
Transformers (2007)
Terrible
If you have washed the dishes, cleaned the bathroom, replaced the cat litter, washed and dried your hair, listened to the phone salesman, written that snail mail letter to aunt Mavis thanking her for the birthday cards for the last 10 years and you have absolutely and completely run out of things to do - still don't watch this movie. Watching paint dry would be better for you than watching this drivel. Whom ever is responsible for making it should under not conditions be allowed to make anything else. There are many boring pointless movies out there but this one tops them off, it is bad right from the beginning and only gets worse after that.
