Taskmaster (2018)
Who?
I LOVE Taskmaster UK so much and noticed they were doing it on other countries but I wondered why not in the U. S. Well... only just this week did I discover they tried to launch it in the U. S. back in 2018... Great! I thought... until I watched the 1st episode... and recognized only 3 of the cast ... Alex Horne, Ron Funches, and Lisa Lamanelli (who I am not a fan of and I don't personally know anyone who is) She's such a polarizing figure even amongst liberals I scratched my head wondering why she would be included in the very 1st season. (Probably some Comedy Central executive demanded it.)
But who was this banterless wooden figure they made the Taskmaster??? I had to know... who is Reggie Watts??? And for that matter the other 3 contestants???
Reggie Watts... is someone most famous for his shows on Cartoon Network.. I wouldn't expect anyone outside of those who watch Cartoon Network to know who he is! The UK gets Greg Davies... and we got the guy who's famous for Superjail and other (honestly just plain awful) shows on Cartoon Network! The U. S. has so many great comedians like Wanda Sykes, Jack Black, Joel McHale... etc... who would have drawn a larger audience as Task Master or contestants... who are these other 3 contestants??? I have no idea... And as I check their IMDB I know them from absolutely nothing. Taskmaster is so great and looks so fun.... how could you not find people that would want to be on the show that people would ACTUALLY KNOW WHO THEY ARE!
This thing was made to fail from the start... and it's the casting.... I wouldn't be surprised if Comedy Central is at fault for that...
Avatar (2009)
Dune meets Pocahontas with extra steps
The movie is visually stunning to an impressive amount. But throughout the movie you get a sense of I've seen this movie before... where? At first I thought it was simply derivative of Disney's Pocahontas an outsider falls in love with a native tribes woman and the person betrothed to her is obviously jealous and there's conflict there... of course the outsider would turn against and fight against their own... the father/chief dies... but what else is there there's something gnawing at the back of my mind.... it took years for me to see it again due to this sensation... and upon re watching it recently I finally figured out it's Dune... omg it's Dune ... the outsider/white savior rides the mythical beast and becomes their leader.... of course it's Dune... and in fairness Dune may be derivative of some other literary work...
Wednesday (2022)
Obvious, but still amusing
You discover who the "bad guy" is in episode 4... and the rest of the series you'll watch everyone try to catch up to what you've already been told... how do you know? Well they bad guy bumps into Wednesday at the dance literally telling you who it is... the only other thing really horrible is some of the dialog is lacking... (moody teenager who has experienced everything under the sun and so obviously knows how to do everything despite their age) is an awful overdone and overplayed trope.
Watching the very 1st episode felt like the time I sat through a twilight movie... then it got better while I had hoped for more mystery throughout the series I can't deny the acting abilities of Jenna Ortega, Gwendolin Christie, Fred Armisen, and Victor Dorobantu. Luis Guzman and Catherine Zeta-Jones make for good representations of Gomez and Morticia as well.
Cursed (2020)
A fun fantasy
It's a fun fantasy. I see A LOT of reviews of people complaining about diversity being added.... but in just about every single shot 80% of the people are white... so if I were you I would ignore the score being brought down by racism... it was a fun take on a classic story. From my understanding Arthur in the story isn't actually the Arthur we know (his name is actually Arthur Pendragon) so if the show isn't canceled due to racist reviews it should be nice to see him pop up later in the story...
Minus some points for the end of the first season. I found the direction taken with Morgan Le Fay to be disappointing and boring a bit.
There's action, gore, magic, and interesting characters and character development here.
Blown Away (2019)
So you don't have to actually follow the rules
Honestly season 1 was great... but season two was really extremely frustrating to watch... Chris maybe followed the rules 1 or 2 times throughout the entire season and should have been eliminated back in the third episode. But over and over again he just ignores the prompts so apparently they just don't even matter. When you judge people on an uneven playing field it isn't fair, someone who tries and fails to make what you want vs someone who ignores what you say and just makes whatever they feel like... why wouldn't the person who tries and fails win?
Black Mirror (2011)
A poor Twilight Zone
I'm not sure if the first few episodes are just particularly bad, or if they are all this way. It basically reminds me of the Twilight Zone. But instead of thought provoking (certainly the case for the pilot) it's based almost entirely on shock value. After watching the first few episodes all I felt was cheated for my time. 15 million merits seemed as though it was hinting at something great with the dystopian future angle but ultimately the end had me feeling like I had wasted my time.
Luke Cage (2016)
What was liked about season 1 is absent in season 2 and what was hated in season one continues to season 2
Originally the score was much high, season one of Luke Cage shined with brilliant ties into the comics and musical guest performances that intertwined beautifully with the story and the club scene simultaneously. So what did I hate about season 1? Not much. When Method Man was introduced to the story we find him introduced in such an inorganic and bizarre way then further integrated to the story in such an awkward way it can only be summed up with one word. Pandering. What happens in season 2? Less acts at the club and those amazing musical numbers although Kingfish gives us some truly magical moments. and in the very first episode? Welcome back pandering as we are greeted with a truly awkward montage with someone from the Jets for some reason why would this possible be there? Oh so we can name drop "Usain Bolt" FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON IN AWKWARD SCENES AND DIALOG!!
