Gabbar Is Back (2015)
Time pass entertainer, no real depth.
Akshay Kumar's Gabbar feels very much like the popular and loved Rajanikanth movies, where he finds and punishes corrupt people in unique and enjoyable to watch, ways. He pretty much succeeds in doing just that. If you are looking for cerebral cinema, this is not for you. This one is for those who like light straight forward on the face easy to decipher entertainment. Can watch, not a must watch.
I Am Kalam (2010)
Beautiful Story, Inspirational.
I am Kalam, follows the story of a boy - living in poverty, having to work at a dhaba to make ends meet and support his mother. But this is no ordinary boy. He is brilliant and ambitious. He cannot go to school due to his limited means, but that does not stop him from dreaming big and continuously working towards that dream. His passion further fuelled by a speech of then-Indian-president, Abdul Kalam. How the entire world around him comes together to get him there, is what the film is about. Shot in picturesque Rajasthan and with a strong support cast in Gulshan Grover, I am Kalam is a movie that inspires. Do watch.
Masaan (2015)
Thought provoking Cinema, at it's very best!
Masaan means crematorium. This movie is centred around the banks of river ganga where funerals are conducted. The story takes 2 tracks, one is richa chadda's track - an educated smart girl, trapped in a society that doesn't want to match her pace, instead wants to just pull her down by trying to shove sexist prejudices down her throat. The second track is around Vicky Kaushal - a boy whose ancestral tree has been in the funeral work, but he is smart and completing a good education, falls head over heels in love, young, innocent college love and then loses that love in the most shattering way. Both tracks take us through a series of emotions that the main characters experience. First love, desire.. then regret, pain .. then longing for closure.. all around the banks of Ganga where the ultimate closure is done. I might run out of words to describe this film. It has so many layers. It is so very moving and thought inducing. It is just brilliant in all possible departments - acting, writing, film setting, screenplay. Just superb. If there is a list of 100 movies one must-watch in a lifetime, Masaan will be in that list.
Gold (2018)
Perfectly designed patriotic tearjerker!
From the very first scene of the movie, I had a lump in my throat and throughout had to control the urge to cry out loud. That I think, was the intent of the film. To tug at the patriotic strings of the heart and make you feel. The film does this, without any camouflage. The production design, background music, songs, dialogues, many sequences in the film are outright intended to make the audience teary. And as I said in the beginning, the film succeeds in doing that. For the patriot within and the film enthusiast without, this film is a must-watch.
Budhia Singh: Born to Run (2016)
Heart-warming, awe-inspiring, true story.
Rarely, we stay back and see the end titles of a movie. Budhia Singh, makes you stay, till the very last title is shown. The true story of a 5 year old marathon runner, who went in to history and record books, by running a 65 km marathon in Orissa - inspires and connects us, to the very real world of Budhia. Here nothing is perfect. A mother who sells him off, a coach who is strict and singly focussed on making him a marathon runner, a media that swings from his side to the other, a government that is vehemently opposed to his running, imposes a ban even. A very real world. What does Budhia do. He runs. No complications stop him or affect him. Mayur is brilliant in portraying that simplicity of Budhia the child. Manoj bajpayee as his stubborn coach is just superb. Inspiring true story, excellently told and acted. Must-watch.
Tiger Zinda Hai (2017)
Bad Story, Terrible direction.
I watched this movie, almost 2 years after its release. Why? Curiosity. The movie made a monstrous 500 + crores at the worldwide box office and I had this extremely stupid need to know why. The story is of how, an in exile Indian spy - Tiger, is asked by the Indian government to go on a mission, to rescue kidnapped Indian nurses in IS occupied Syria. The question is, Why? Why would an entire government put the fate of these kidnapped nurses on a single exiled operative. I will tell you why. So that the operative can remove his shirt, tie it around his head, aka Rambo style and shoot through an entire army of IS men. Again, why? For the hardcore fans to whistle away. For the movie buffs like myself to pull at our hair. There is one character portrayed by Paresh Rawal. This character is absolutely hilarious, thanks to the genius of Rawal. However, that is not enough to save this dreary, ridiculous, snooze-fest of a movie! Please do yourself a favour and stay far away from it. Do-not-watch!
Mukti Bhawan (2016)
Unique Story, Deftly told, Masterful Acting.
The story itself, of a father sharing his premonitions of an impending death, demanding to be taken to Varanasi to die, is so unique! On top of that, once there, moments where the elderly joke about jealousy when someone dies before them, are absolutely beautiful, and ironic. Adil Hussain, as the man balancing between the stubbornness of his father and the rebellion of his daughter, is absolutely brilliant in showcasing that struggle. This is a movie that stays with you, days after you have watched it. Must-Watch!
Raazi (2018)
Alia is brilliant in an okay film.
The movie revolves around an Indian girl who is asked to step in to the role of a spy for her country. Alia, as that girl, is absolutely brilliant! Her struggle as she plays the part to the hilt, is so real! The story however is routine and straightforward and the twists do not jolt that hard. The production design is superb as expected from dharma productions and gives a feel of reality to the context of the story through a beautiful 1970 setting and landscape of India's border. The movie is a can-watch, not a must-watch.
Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran (2018)
Fast paced thriller!
Parmanu as a story has nothing novel to offer, as it is about India's popular nuclear tests. However the movie completely surprises in its handling of a known topic and presenting less heard-of and intriguing twists to its journey. The cast and its acting is up to the mark if not great. The thrill however, makes up for it. The production design is also crisp and gives a feeling of reality. Watch it, you will be pleasantly surprised!
Hindi Medium (2017)
Strong, Relevant Story; Superb Acting
In a story revolving around parents who struggle to get their child in to a decent English school, due to their non English speaking background, Hindi Medium, captures the emotions of the desperate parents perfectly! Irfan Khan is just incredible as a business tycoon who loves his wife and will do anything for her, even if it means embracing a dialect he knows nothing about. The movie is brisk in its pace and humorous in its handling of the subject throughout! Meaningful cinema with entertainment! Do watch!
Newton (2017)
Rajkumar Rao, you gem!
Newton the film, revolves around the character by the same name. This character is full of intrigue! His stubbornness to do his duty completely and sincerely, is so entertaining to watch! Rajkumar is known to perform edgy roles and he does that again, brilliantly! With an excellent supporting cast and a crisp screenplay, Newton is a thoroughly enjoyable fare! Do watch!
Hichki (2018)
Rani Mukherjee is Outstanding!
The story about an aspiring teacher with Tourette syndrome is brilliant. There is humor and witty dialogues and lots of drama. Rani Mukherjee as the protagonist is just perfect! She carries the movie! An inspiring tribute to everyone who has to fight visible and invisible battles! Do watch!
