The Orville (2017)
I really like it, but...
This is the Star Trek show I've wanted. Enterprise was even too gritty. I love the nostalgic cinematic quality.
Unfortunately, I don't love Seth MacFarlane. I don't feel like there's anything horrible about him, but every time I see him on screen, it pulls me out of the show. Timothy Olyphant would be a much better captain. Every episode, I can't help but think the role was written for Timothy, not Seth.
Pinching Penny (2011)
Ridiculous
I liked the opening bit with the home invasions, but after that, the movie fell apart. Each new character got more and more ridiculous and unbelievable. The characters had no depth and no development.
They mentioned over and over in the story that the main character had an obsession with buying things. Too bad it wasn't shown in the movie. You didn't see or feel it about the character. It wasn't part of him. All you ever saw were a few additional items cluttering the house. It was an entirely unnecessary motive for him without showing it in the character. Hell, it wasn't necessary at all. Why does he need the obsession in the first place? Why can't they simply want money? Isn't that motive enough? It wasn't entirely rotten. A few scenes and characters showed promise. I've seen a lot worse with bigger budgets. I hope his next movie takes my advice. Great movies have deep characters. Forget the plot. Piling on more characters and more plot points don't make it better. Instead, deepen and develop your characters. Make me feel for them. Make them real.
Limbo (1999)
Dreadful waste of...
I was going to finish my summary thought but I thought I'd be more like this movie.
Why were we introduced so so many characters only to have them left as incomplete parts? I'm no stranger to bleak story lines, and a little imagination is good for a movie, but why the hell are we watching a movie if we have to imagine more than 50% of the plot? The characters were interesting but the second half of the movie never needed to happen. They could have continued with the characters that were starting to show development, instead, someone felt that developing characters, and giving them actual story arcs was a bad idea. They decided to do the right thing and sacrifice any hopes of a decent drama for some misguided artistic vision.
I'm only giving this movie 3 stars because the partially developed characters held my interest while they existed.
