Tár (2022)

Generic artist from all ankles

This movie definitely is not and can not be everyone's cup of tea. People could find it boring, confusing and very possibly not interesting.

Sometimes it is, sometimes it is not. But that is what I like about this movie and about ,,In The Bedroom'' director. It seems that he tries to take one particular situation, or in this case, life and work of someone and show every aspect of it.

We see Lydia Tàr teaching students, giving interviews, conducting orchestra, handling legal matters in a formal/business part of her life. We see her interacting with family, future and past associates in restaurants and similar places in her private life plus we see her alone with all her traumas, inner battles and ambitions.

Something of it is interesting and relatable, something is not but that is a life and everytime real life gets its way into a movie it divides the audience.

No matter how much person is exciting or not on screen or stage, in real life there is no way everything is only exciting or boring about that person.

It is not easy to follow what's going on because many characters are introduced as we already know them. I'm ok with it but someone else might not be.

Movie is much more suitable for those people who have similar profession as Tàr.

Cate Blanchett didn't disappoint. She is magnificent and delivers great performance as Lydia Tàr here. Cinematography is beautiful and script is nice. So technically it is a very well made movie.

The only thing which is missing from this movie is some kind of fireworks to positively shock the viewer. In other words, everything has the same, calm rhythm from start to finish, feels more like some kind of analysis of or a tutorial for how to be a controversial artist with a warning what could happen if you seek perfection too much, than like a live action movie.

In a world of special effects and box office profit seekers it is not good time to be this movie. But if you are able to sit trough two and a half hours observing some controversial lesbian self confident artist's life battles, give this movie a chance, you will not be disappointed!

Expected much more

I wanted to end a day with some kind of hillarious comedy so I came up with a Shaun Of The Dead. Ratings were good, it seemed I found what I were looking for. The beginning was promising, got me interested in the movie but as it was going on, I felt more and more bored and empty... Repeated ''catchphrases'' stopped being funny, action scenes didn't have me on the edge of a seat and contained nothing I haven't seen before somewhere else.No big plot twists, no hysterical laughs, no thrills. Too bad because first 30 min I really enjoyed,if they only could go the other way. If the aim of the movie was to sistematically make me one of the '' zombies'' from the beginning, it completely succeded.

Good intentions, but average overall quality
20 May 2020
This movie has pretty much the same intention as classics like The Wicker Man (1973), Rosemary's Baby( 1968) and Stepford Wives(1975) in which someone who do you trust builds a conspiracy against you which is revealed at the late stages of the movie and confirms all suspitions earlier in the movie that something is wrong.

Although this movie contains better visual effects , photography and less censured violence than these three, it somehow failed to impress me due to: poor( or at least too average) acting by main characters, being very predictable and seeming very much incomplete. It's like everything is mainly focused on extreme violence and erotic scenes instead on developing characters and story, just for audience to say : ,,Wow what a sick and bizzare movie!''

But, honestly, if I didn't watch three abovementioned movies first, maybe I would like this movie more. It's definitely not a total garbage, but it's not something I'd like to watch again either.

Why so much hate?

Warning: Spoilers
Well, I have watched a 500+ movies (most were from 20th century),and some were crap, some were astonishing. I don't remember that I degraded any movie like many reviewers here degrade this one. When I heard It's gonna hit theathers I bought a tickets 2 weeks in advance. Movie started and I really enjoyed almost every minute of it. I liked the soundtrack full of 1968 songs which some of I used to listen a lot and their great timing such as ,,Hush'' with Sharon Tate's hair waving in the rhythm of a song and amazing free ride with Brad Pitt through 1969s Hollywood which landscape seemed really cool and lively. I also liked Old Hollywood references (spaghetti westerns, Polanski, McQueen etc.) Next, I don't remember seeing very often movies where an actor plays the actor who plays someone else and still somehow you can identify all three( scene where Rick Dalton holds a girl on a knee) in a wonderful performance by DiCaprio. I also liked rehearsal scenes first with a magnetophone and later in actual studio. Every scene with Brad Pitt as Cliff Boot (the most Tarantino character) was entertaining : Bruce Lee scene, Spare Tire scene and of course the last scene. I was waiting for a Sharon Tate murder for a whole movie, and when I realised that instead I got a crazy Manson family vs Cliff Booth fight I laughed and whole movie in the moment came completed as a perfect fusion of sightseeing old Hollywood and crazy Tarantino action. Movie made my day and I thought that everybody will found it charming. I was wrong. Many of my friends called it crap and bad. I thought , OK, they never heard what actually happened to Sharon Tate and they do not get references or understand Tarantino's way of expressing tribute to particular events or genres. But when I saw pile of negative reviews on IMDb I was seriously questioning my taste. What's so wrong and bad about this movie? Acting? It was great. Story? Interesting depiction of an everyday life of an old Hollywood fading actor, his stuntman and New Hollywood actress, they connections and huge differences. Duration? I don't know, maybe I got a stamina from watching movies like Gone With A Wind, Ten Commandments, 1900, Lawrence of Arabia etc. so this movie didn't seem so long to me. Plot? O Yeah : no plot , no plot blah blah blah . Well many great movies have no plot such as La Dolce Vita or even Pulp Fiction. Sometimes directors try to improvise, sometimes they want to study characters ,and sometimes they want to make you feel like stucked in a day with a characters which I believed It's a case with this one. I watched all 9 Tarantino films(I'm not even a huge fan of him) and I admit, this is not his best, but it's far,far away from being his worst. Well, It depends of a taste but in the worst case it's definitely better than Jackie Brown and Death Proof(I liked these movies as well) So anyone giving this movie a rating 1,2 or 3 should not be taken seriously and I found it hard to believe they actually understood movie at all. If Joker with x time recycled plot and psycho/white heat mother complex themes have a rating 8.7 this movie should have at least 8. I don't get it.
