My favorite Mystery of All time.
25 December 2005
I know there will many who say that they guessed the ending of this movie, but that is about as likely as saying they knew the ending of "Sixth Sense". Really, I cannot express the love I have of this movie. The loving and realistic relationship of the old Barrister and his staunchly loyal maid is one of screens best. Powers and Dietrich were at the top of their game. If you have the choice between watching the original movie and the TV remake watch the original first. There was no way they were going to capture the energy of the classic, they didn't. This will go down and Agatha Christies greatest translation to the screen. Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester are probably the greatest choices for this film. WATCH!!!!!!

The Sum of Us (1994)
10/10
Wonderful.
25 December 2005
I watched this movie a couple years after coming out myself and I could only wish that I had that kind of relationship with my father, or even something close to it. Russell Crowe is outstanding and, in my opinion, on of the most sexiest characters I have ever seen in a movie. I was less enthusiastic about his potential pattern, but that was a minor consideration. I know, I know, it was an idealistic portrayal of a father and a gay son relationship...but really just having a positive movie without the spectre of AIDS was a welcome relief. The actor who played the father was incredible, both tough and sensitive, with a definite flair for comedy. The ending was a bit of a downer, but not a disappointment. I recommend this to everyone who is tired of gay movies dealing with the same tragedies over and over again. GLSILVA@MYWAY.COM.

Little Women (1949)

Very disappointing.
25 December 2005
After all the hype I had heard about the Jane Austin novel and different film versions of the book I found myself very disappointed with the movie. I had expected a classic drama but that was not the case. First of all let me preface my review with the fact that I love old movies, particularly mysteries and dramas, but not female oriented movies. This probably makes a huge difference, so take my review with a large grain of salt. I thought the acting was a bit over the top, but that is very common in movies of this era. June Allyson was good as Jo but I found every sister to be stereotypical and form driven. There were no surprises or overly dramatic moments. I hate writing negative reviews, but the movie left me very cold. It has always been my intention to read the book, but after this that seem unlikely. The only warming story line was between the old gentlemen and the youngest sister, that was a very welcome bright spot in an otherwise disappointing viewing experience. Again there are others who love this movie, I'm just not one of them.

Burglar (1987)
7/10
Good Movie, perfect WG vehicle.

I really enjoyed this movie, actually I've enjoyed it a number of viewings. I purchased the DVD. Why did Whoopie stop making movies that were so much fun. I enjoyed the books for which the movie is based, and prefer a woman to a man as a cat burglar. The cast is wonderful, especially Leslie Ann Warren, she is a total hoot. I won't spoil the ending but it was really cool. The atmosphere while they are bar-hopping is so realistic, having been a bar-hopper in my youth in San Francisco. Why isn't Hollywood making these little sleeper hits anymore. Now its all big budget busts, or small artsy fartsy movies. How about a well played mystery without the "Big" named pretty boys and girls as stars. More movies like this and perhaps the box office slump will not stop slumping...

Due South: Pilot (1994)
Season 1, Episode 0
7/10
Affecting show.
24 December 2005
I was only able to see the pilot movie and a couple of the episodes, but I really enjoyed this show. I found the star to be quite endearing and the supporting cast to be well acted. I really liked the star and the detective sidekick. Sorry for not knowing off hand the names. I have always like the fish out of water story line, and this uses that old acorn of a plot to good advantage. Its a pity that this show didn't survive, perhaps I'm one of the reasons, I could never find it at a time I was available. Does anyone know if this show is on DVD yet, it would buy it. The scenes in the movie were beautiful, and having been to Canada I can attest to the beauty. Please e-mail me at GLSILVA@MYWAY.COM. THANKS.

Sherlock Holmes Returns (1993 TV Movie)
7/10
A Rather Fun Movie
24 December 2005
This would have proved to be a fun series if produced. The Sherlock Holmes, not usually my favorite character, was well cast and Deborah Farentino would have been a fine addition. Not as serious as the Doyle novels, of which were relatively low brow. The story was interesting and well staged. Its too bad that some have taken them seriously, but when taken with a good mood, I guarantee you could really enjoy this little lark. Living in San Francisco for a number of years it was nice to see the old city. No, it isn't classic mystery, but really, neither was the source material. All in all a well paced breezy mystery worthy of attention it never received.

Will & Grace (1998–2020)
Thoughts on review.
10 December 2005
Although I agree on some minor points of the on-line review there are a few points that I must clarify. Yes there have been some stinker episodes but all in all the all seasons of W&G, with the exception of season 7 were excellent. I particularly like the 6th season with Leo and felt it was a mistake for that character to leave. This season could also be counted as one of the "Classic" seasons. I would urge the writer of the review to please buy or rent season 4 and watch the subsequent seasons. Here is to hoping that they release all the seasons for our continued enjoyment. I know this is the last season of W&G, but it has given me and many viewers 8 wonderful years. Regards Gary
