Regal Academy (2016)
Mediocre girls' cartoon is nothing worth hype or fangirling about..
I saw this girls' cartoon recently on the Nickelodeon channel in the U.S. and from what I've seen, I hate to say, but I was very underwhelmed. I found the premise for the show to be bland, the animation cheap, the idea of students enrolling at a school for fairytales to be outdated, low-brow and typical, and the cartoon in general to be a bland, mediocre girls' cartoon. The main character, Rose isn't desk-slammingly infuriating, although I did find her English voice to be grating within seconds. Rose's friends felt like one-dimensional, overdone caricatures to me, and the whole setting of fairytale land felt outdated. While the first episode wasn't so bad, I couldn't get past watching the rest of the series. I could barely remember anything from this series because its so bland. It never felt genuine or earnest to me either, it always felt like a bland, sellout cartoon. I'm apparently in the minority, as this cartoon got two seasons and is still airing on Nick Jr. in the U.S. and Latin America, along with other stations around the world. It's a strange mix of a well-received, solid girls' cartoon by some, yet a dull, mediocre Italian cartoon picked up by Nickelodeon that received lots of hate and backlash. While I personally don't hate this series, it's just not something I never found appealing. I just don't get the appeal of this series. It's bland, forgettable, dull, boring, typical, and just sets a really low bar for girls cartoons of today, which is sad, really, considering that there are some fantastic magical girl cartoons.

Diary of a Mad Black Woman (2005)
Typical Tyler Perry film with low-brow humour and an abysmal narrative
I may be in the minority, but I'm not the hugest fan of Tyler Perry's titles. Although I do respect him as a director and his growth over the years, I just can't stand this movie. I grew up with this one, and watched it several times on DVD with my parents, however I couldn't get passed the stereotypical African-Americans setups and the low-brow humour. My main criticism with this film is the typical low-brow humour you would expect from a film aiming at Afro-American entertainment, and the setups. While some films very naturally grab the attention of a viewer through culture shock, the majority of the humour in this feels forced. It almost feels like they're desperately trying to get laughs from an African-American audience, but me as partially Afro, I just can't feel anything. The humour wasn't offensively bad, it was just low-brow and I just can't understand the appeal of this film. Even the title itself implies a forced, pandering feel to it. Normally, culture shock films can have subjective titles, although for some reason, the title in this one feels like it's trying to pander to an African-American audience. You can grab the attention of a certain group without forcing it on them.
Overall, there is nothing good or even comical to expect from this film, it's a fest full of stereotypes, somewhat mean-spirited and mixed messages, pandering and forced attempts at appealing to an African-American audience, abysmal narrative, and overall a bad movie inside/out. No matter which way I look at it, I just can't get past these typical setups and pander towards African-American audiences.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes: Black Panther - Trouble in Wakanda (2018)
Solid, somewhat wholesome, charming LEGO film
I recently saw this airing on the Disney XD channel in the U.S., and from what I've seen, I was impressed. While the scene with Thanos as the opening villain and the newswoman making a report with the Black Panther in the beginning felt a little rushed with an off-putting pace, I found myself indulging in the scenes with Black Panther confronting Killmonger, with most of the story taking place in Wakanda. The humour was a bit wholesome, although I found the wholesomeness to be apart of its charm. I was entertained and laughing all the way through. Although, my main criticism with this special is that the scenes with the Avengers in them felt kind-of too wholesome, and I didn't find the parts of the special that took place in the city to be remarkable, just cheesy. Some of the scenes, typically ones with the Avengers in them, felt way too wholesome for my tastes. Overall, I think that this is a great example of a solid LEGO Marvel cartoon, with astonishing animation, quick and snappy editing, a pleasant tone, and a compelling narrative. I wouldn't call this one of their best, however, I do appreciate the step that LEGO is taking with their animations. This is another curve in the right direction for Disney XD, and something that's easy on the parents, and excellent for the children.

Solid, snappy, vibrant, fairly light-hearted and compelling LEGO cartoon covered in a thick layer of cheesiness.
