Eagle vs Shark (2007)
The gift that keeps on giving
Each time I watch it I get more out of it, and I've probably watched it more times than I should have.
Subtle, insightful, sad but clad in the best trackies.
This movie will kick your arse.
Escape at Dannemora (2018)
Top viewing
At last, Paul Dano has done something I can watch and believe. This is a nuanced and moody show, with standout performances by all the leads. I consider this to be developed and directed with utmost care and Ben Stiller has done an amazing job. Only up to episode 2 but cannot fault it thus far.
Long Weekend (2008)
Not as predictable as I expected but ...
What about the dog??? Why leave it locked in the car, and how did it survive the crazy driving and eventual collision with the (already dead) tree?
The Spanish Princess (2019)
Wow. Three episodes in and I regret it.
This is easily the worst adaptation of any historical event ever. The acting is woeful, the lead actor is completely unconvincing and the lack of extras really shows in most scenes. The horses are better actors than the hoomans with more stage presence.
Three hours of my life I'll never get back. Avoid at all costs.
The Tale of Ruby Rose (1987)
An extraordinary journey in an exquisite land.
I live in the area this film was made and in my opinion it deserves a higher rating than it has received. Breathtaking scenery, historical accuracy, unhurried unfolding of the story line and one woman's mission to trace her background all contribute to what is, in my mind, a masterpiece. This film quite rightly won many international film awards, and remains a constant treat.
Jungletown (2017)
Laughable example of white privilege stressing out in the jungle.
Apart from all the obvious flaws, this doco shows an ecologically themed sojourn in the jungle with a cat killing the country's national emblem, to the amusement of one of the participants. Maybe they don't get irony?
Australia (2008)
Really??
Why didn't someone tell Hugh Jackman - who should have known anyway - that Australian stockmen don't crouch over their horse's necks when they ride, or gallop horses past the homestead ad nauseam. And the pigeon english as spoken by the indigenous Australians in this movie is cringe inducing. And how did Jackman make it to Darwin when it was still burning, presumably from near Faraway Downs? Terrible movie, saved only by the beautiful landscape.
