Blade Runner (1982)
Not that great. Overrated.
I found the movie bizarre and hard to follow. The plot, I'm sure, was good, if they hadn't clouded it with drawn out drama scenes and poor music. (I found the music particularly irksome). I thought the acting was alright, in general. It had a few funny lines, and a few thought provoking lines in the script. I thought SOME of the cinematography was alright, however most of it was not real eye-catching. I did like the ending somewhat. I liked the monologue at the end. But all in all it wasn't the best I've seen. Futuristic movies interest me, and this one just didn't cut it. I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone who is in a good mood.
The Importance of Being Earnest (2002)
I vote YES!!
I loved this movie. I thought it was so funny. It was excellently cast as well. I loved Rupart Everett and Reece Witherspoon the most. They added a certain charm to the film. Truly, there was very little that I didn't like. I thought that the plot was very clever and that the actors seemed to know exactly how to portray the events. I liked the subplot with Reece's character, and liked the flashbacks in the memories of the characters. I thought that was very well done. The spectacle in the movie was impressive as well. The homes, the clothing and the countryside all stayed true to the time period and setting the the film took place in. Accents, also, were great. Many times in a British film the American accents are awful and not rehearsed. I was impressed with the quality of the accents.
I've always loved the book, and I thought the movie did it justice.
This movie is a must-see for people of all ages. It's very charming, cute, sincere, witty and SO hilarious!
Rent (2005)
Redefines the meaning of Passion!
Words cannot express how impressed I was with this movie. It is hands down my favorite of all time. RENT documents the stories of several young people living in NY on poverty level and at times on the streets! It shows a year in the life of friends. What I liked most about this movie, I think, was that despite the dismal, horrible conditions these should managed to not only survive, but to thrive, and to be passionate about life. RENT shows the true meaning of passion. It is so rare these days to find people who are so passionate about something they love that they would devote their lives to it. So often we hear people telling us to pick a certain career because it pays well, or has good benefits. The characters of RENT have defied popular, cultural and logical standards of life, and have forged their own live comprised of all the things they love and all the things they are passionate about. I LOVE La Vie Boheme because it is just a list of the elements of their lives! It is so beautiful, and yes SO much fun! I laughed, I cried, I've felt things I've never felt.
See this film. Even if it's "not your style" or you find certain themes offensive. See it anyway. It might change your perspectives on some aspects of life. It might show you something you never knew before. See it at least once. Experience the power, the love, the the angst and the extreme passion of RENT.
Open House (2004)
Really bizarre, but lots of fun too!
Open house is truly one of the most bizarre films I've ever seen! The storyline is SO unusual. It's got everything from "sexy swipers" to old has-been real estate agents to a dysfunctional guy longing for his lost past. The combination of the characters makes for an interesting new movie that was TOTALLY not what I expected. But that being said, I did like it. I thought Anthony Rapp was Fantastic! He was so cute in the movie, and I was especially impressed with his performance in the final scenes of the movie. Jenna Leigh Green, although she has a very minor part" was also hilarious and her voice is simply beautiful. The story and the music are different from anything you've ever heard or seen. It's something you'll want to watch, but make sure you're going into it with an open mind, because I guarantee that it won't be at all what you were expecting!
King Kong (2005)
I didn't understand.
This film had spectacular spectacle, great acting, fantastic special effects and great cinematography. The only thing I really didn't like was the relationship between the girl and Kong... it made me nervous. Truly. I wasn't sure what they were getting at in their relationship. I mean, were they just friends? Was he a pet? Was she in love with the gorilla? Maybe I just need to see it another time. But to me it didn't make sense, and left me feeling uneasy. I also HATED the bugs, and the giant leeches. But I guess it's all part of the horror aspect of it, and so if you like thriller elements, then you'd like this.
On the other hand, I was REALLY impressed with the sets, the costumes, the hair and makeup and most of the storyline. It kept me interested most of the time, and very much on the edge of my seat. It had a great blend of comedy and emotion with the action mixed in. I liked it, all in all, but wasn't impressed with certain aspects of it.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)
Disappointed...
My whole life I've always been a huge fan of the Chronicals of Narnia. I grew up reading the books and watching the original movie. In High School I adapted The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to the stage for our high school drama team. In doing this I became even more attached to the story. When I watched the movie I must say that I was a little disappointed in it. The plot was basically the same, but there were several aspects that the movie left out that I thought were very important. Several lines were cut that were my favorite. As a Christian I've always turned to the Narnia series as a source of inspiration, and I felt that this movie DRASTICALLY left out the Christian aspect. I felt that CS Lewis would have wanted the movie to stay true to his Christian parallels, and I felt that it really did not. I was very sad to find that. I thought everything else was good. The acting and costumes and such. But as for the Christian parallels I was very disappointed and irritated.
