Matt Rife: Natural Selection (2023)
Absolutely not worth the watch
This stand-up special was such a disappointment. The entire set consisted of Matt punching down and making fun of people. Misogyny, homophobia, fatphobia, telling people to kill themselves.. it was just a mess that he repeatedly tried to cover with "I'm a nice guy but..." as if that absolved him from all the messed up things he was saying. I used to watch Matt on Facebook and think he was a funny guy but not after this. I almost never give out a single star rating but this stand-up special deserved it. I didn't laugh once or even smile. I continued on watching until the end just to see if it would improve but it never did.
Under the Banner of Heaven (2022)
Thought provoking; disturbing; well-written
This mini series is an acting triumph for Andrew Garfield and Daisy Edgar-Jones especially but the entire cast was outstanding.
It's a thought-provoking series based on a true story that made me think more critically than ever about how easily modern organized religions can turn from something positive into something more sinister.
I had been avoiding watching this one due to my own religious upbringing, but finally gave in and gave it a try, and I'm glad that I did. Despite some of the more gruesome details, this was well-worth the watch and will definitely be on my mind for quite some time, I feel.
Disclosure: Trans Lives on Screen (2020)
A documentary everyone should see
I cried multiple times during this documentary.
As a person of trans experience, watching this documentary opened my eyes to see how much media has helped shape how I see myself.
I highly recommend this to anyone and everyone. It is important, thoughtful, and very tastefully made.
Freak Show (2017)
Disappointing
I did not enjoy this film at all. What were we meant to learn from it? If people inflict massive amounts of pain on you, you should just turn the other cheek no matter what? Maybe I was expecting too much, but I definitely expected a better film with a cast that included Bette Midler, Laverne Cox, and Alex Lawther.
Stand and Deliver (1988)
A truly inspiring film
I watched this film while taking calculus 1 in college and it convinced me I should enroll in calculus 2 the next semester. That is until I realized I did not have an teacher as insanely dedicated to my future as Mr. Escalante was to his students futures.
I really appreciated this film and how inspiring it was though!
Over the Moon (2020)
Music was wonderful; plot was weak
I enjoyed the cultural aspects of this film, the animation, and the music. I would have loved to rate this film higher but the story was lacking in several areas.
Her father and Mrs. Zhong are just getting married? And Fei Fei never even knew they were seeing eachother? Why did her father's fiancé put the charm in her mooncake in the first place? It is eluded to that the fiancé is distantly related to Houyi who originally had the charm; however, that doesn't explain why the fiancé chose to place a presumably valuable family heirloom in Fei Fei's food. It also would have taken one or two sentences to explain why Chang'e needed the gift but instead she just starts demanding it from Fei Fei with no explanation.
Maybe the story would have made more sense if I was previously aware of the legend of Chang'e, Houyi, and Jade Rabbit. Did she only have so much time in general to bring back Houyi? And did she always have the power to beam people to the moon? If so for both, why couldn't she have beamed the charm/"gift" to herself long ago? Why did it take Jade Rabbit thousands of years to create the potion to bring Houyi back?
Anyway, the music was great, the voice acting was wonderful, and I appreciated the animation a lot. I just wish the plot would have been more fleshed out.
The Great British Bake Off: Final (2018)
Completely Underwhelmed
As an avid watcher of The Great British Baking Show I was determined to keep watching after Mary Berry, Sue, and Mel departed the show last season. However, I must say after two whole seasons I still find myself underwhelmed with the performance of Prue as a judge and the direction the show has gone. This final was the most underwhelming of all the finals that preceded it. I, and everyone I have spoken to about this final, believe judge favoritism and ratings/higher entertainment value played far too big of a role in the determination of this final. Perhaps it was the way it was shot but I didn't appreciate the challenges set forth whatsoever. I'll continue watching the show but it has completely lost its original zeal and magic for me.
Dreamcatcher (2003)
Cool concept - one time watch
I spent this whole film thinking, ".....what." I could definitely sense there were pieces left out from the book that would have been really interesting in the movie. Why was their friend their dreamcatcher? For example.
It was pretty odd that there were only two women who spoke in 2 hours and 13 minutes (definitely did NOT pass the Bechdel Test) but overall it was a cool, albiet disgusting at times, movie.
Duck Butter (2018)
Message 10, Plot 3
This films message struck a chord with me. There isn't an intricate plot or storyline but the acting left nothing to be desired and the chemistry between actors was intense at times. I appreciated the subtle, nuanced pieces of acting that made this movie shine through as authentic and made the characters very real.
This is a film about persons ability to change, and how some of us can change quickly while others have to go at their own pace. It's a simple message but there is something comforting about being reaffirmed via film that we are all just trying our best to be better and that it takes time.
Overall I'm rating this 7/10. The acting and the message were wonderful but in the end, it's a one-time watch.
The Golden Compass (2007)
As disappointing as A Wrinkle in Time (2018)
Though I haven't read the "His Dark Materials" trilogy, I can tell just by watching this that there were many pieces from the book that were missing in the movie. There was a tremendous amount of traveling and dramatic running/chase scenes but not a lot of explanations or in-depth character development. It is possible that they were saving the character development for the rest of the never-to-be-created trilogy, but the whole movie appears to be propped up on effects and the idea of a wonderful story. I absolutely loved the premise of the movie - who doesn't like the idea of being able to speak to your soul that is represented by an animal? Or the idea of infinite parallel universes running next to ours? - but the whole movie falls flat. Although this film came out in 2007, I liken it to the 2018 "A Wrinkle in Time" for a measure of my disappointment.
A Wrinkle in Time (2018)
Not worth the watch
The movie has incredible color, costumes, and overall cinematically is gorgeous. What it carries in all those categories it falls completely flat in storyline, story progression, and logic. If I hadn't read the book I don't think I would have followed this storyline at all. In lieu of actual story there are a lot of long, dramatic shots that leave the viewer feeling bored; I often wished they would just fast forward to where the movie got interesting - sadly, that moment never came. I absolutely adore all of the actors in this film - unfortunately most of their appearances were a major letdown to what could have been. If you want to watch "A Wrinkle in Time" instead of reading the book, I highly suggest the 2003 version as it's much truer to the story and is actually interesting.
