Carrie (2013)
destruction of a novel
16 November 2014
I was pretty skeptical to see this movie in a theater and i waited this movie to be available on social streaming sites like Netflix.I wanted to give a go and i was pretty overwhelmed with the poor acting and lousy story development which had nothing to do with the original sequence of the developments of events in the original book by Stephen King. It was pretty sub-par startup-wise. I really think the only salvager of this movie was the good acting by the Carrie character Chloe Moretz. She was rather realistic with her transition to the clairvoyant, supernatural feature-glore role Carrie White. She was way better than other actors and actresses in terms of acting.

I am glad i didn't do any driving to see this movie in the auditorium. It was just fun to see it on my iPad on the couch on a Sunday evening.

I rate this movie 1 out of 10 and i give one rating out of 10 for the sake of good acting of Chloe Moretz. Rest is just sub-par.

Roller coaster of emotions and intensity
26 January 2014
Nowadays it is obvious to see movies which were made to make money and hit the charts for couple of weeks thanks to the rumors spinning around about how good the movies and how hot the chicks are. Vampire movies, Kardashian butt maneuvering episodes appeal the audience to the auditoriums and leave the real movie fans frustrated. It is even more frustrating to see terrible movies from renowned directors and actors.

I knew for sure this movie was NOT going to be one of the other movies which are nothing but waste-of-money. One word to summarize this movie is INTENSE! If ever there were a lesson on keeping an audience captivated by taking them through a roller-coaster of emotions look no further than Paul Greengrass's latest thriller, "Captain Philips". Inspired by true events of March 2009, when Richard Philips, the Captain of a cargo ship was taken hostage by Somali pirates, this film has everything: drama, suspense, heroics… In truly nail-biting fashion, Tom Hanks plays Captain Richard Philips and executes these emotions flawlessly.

So convincing is his performance that you would be forgiven for almost believing that you were on the journey with him, sharing his pain, courage and at times total anguish. Barkhad Abdi's performance as Muse - the leader of the pirates - is riveting, going toe-to-toe with Hank in terms of wit, and carrying out the role of 'the villain' to perfection but not in your stereotypical way as he evokes an element of empathy amongst viewers.

As the story unfolds, it keeps you wondering and guessing right until the very end. Underlying questions keep you on the edge of your seat: what will happen to Captain Philips? Will Muse's unpredictable nature take a turn for the worse? How much longer can they survive? Nowadays, it's all too easy to leverage special effects with an A-list cast, throwing in some loud bangs and call it a thriller. I'm a firm believer that the point of Cinema is to communicate the story whilst keeping the audience captivated. 'Captain Philips' not only achieves this with ease but delivers a story rich in dialog and accurately reflecting the events of March 2009 through the lives of relate-able characters. Somali pirates' exploits are well documented in our news, however this story is palpable to such an extent that it brings you as close to the real life event as possible whilst avoiding all the associated dangers.

The feeling of fear setting in as pirates approach the ship, the anguish felt as Captain Philips is taken hostage, the unpredictable violence of Muse, may all be cinematic: however, as you watch the story unravel these feelings will be anything but cinematic. The words "must watch" are overused in our industry but if you are after an intense ride, with a wave of emotions and character depth in abundance, 'Captain Philips' is definitely a must watch. It is great to view this movie on bluray as the picture is unwavering , effects are vowen in depth . Worth every dime !Evren Buyruk, Plano,TX USA

The Conjuring (2013)
Horror Ingenuity
8 July 2013
creator of one of the most disturbing movies by far the Saw once again carved his name with golden letters pulling off an outstanding, outlandish movie by digging deep into the roots of real fright elements of human nature. He not only embedded the real intensity of dimensional startling feelings but he also derailed from the anomaly to conjure the cinematographic fright elements back into the horror genre. I have stayed away from writing reviews regards to recent scary movies as I regretted seeing all twisted comments over the most ridiculous movies ever by people whose reviews resonated in the raving realm. James Wan is one of the rare directors in the movie industry bringing the ultimate fear intensity to the nature of human beings . Tiny Tim's tip toe song being played in the most disturbing scenes of the movie sinister showcases the real intensity. I would recommend this movie to my worst enemy. The premise is based on a true story which panned it's reputation for years in Rhode Island area . People who bash about paranormal stupidity movies would dislike this movie as their sense of fear and their likes regards to horror genre is as cheap as wal-Mart sushis . This move glued me tight to my narrow seat pulling my legs upto my abdomen. Do not go to watch this movie to have rest in sleep cause you will be having hard time drifting off to sleep as every single noise or rattle will wire you up. Avoid watching this movie if you are a wuss . Kudos to Wan by making such a great movie. James, you have literally set your fame back in the game. Keep making great movies like the conjuring. Avid fans of paranormal activity movies will hate you for sure . James Wan has gotten his swagger back with this movie !! go and watch it . you will be startling till the credits roll. Sinister (I) (2012)
Hats off to the decade;s scariest movie with some mistakes
4 October 2012
I was fortunate enough to see the prescreening of this movie and I have to underline the intensity of the pure horror in it.I actually was skeptical to see this movie due to the overrated trailer. Honestly the trailer is giving just a tad bit of what the movie is all about. I will do my best not to spoil this movie in my review. I trembled throughout the movie with the plot and cinematography used to pull of this movie. The character and the plot development have been elaborately handled and nothing has been blown out of the proportion. Aside from the scene where the kid is getting outside the box everything was scary in it. The idea that crime novelist dad find boxes of murder tapes and his trying to see what those murders are all about and his connecting those scenes to each other in the cinematographic aspect is well done and well maintained. Ethan Hawke's plausibility is a great contribution along with the other cast. I did not see any character who did not fit to the cast at all. Everyone in the movie was very close to the reality which made this movie quite outstanding. The characters are nothing but perfect. Ethan Hawke features a crime novelist who moves in a new house with his family. His finding a box of 8 mm tapes on which gruesome murders took place drags the audience to the depth of the real horror. The camera-work and the quality of the shooting technique build up to the intensity to make this movie scary enough. The gruesome murders on the tapes are split into two parts so nothing is shown at once which makes the audience wait for the second batch of the murders which are quite disturbing. The taped murder scenes are quite disturbing and I totally understand the reason why the rating is quite comprehensive with warnings/ The imagery used in the movie is also very scary and it adds up. The audience understands what is really going on with logical sequence order. I can clearly state that Sinister is the scariest movie among all the movies i have byfar laid eyes on. I would have hard time deciding which one tops when compared to Exorcist of Blattey's. I was pretty pessimistic with the scary movies lately but Sinister has been upto par. If you want to watch a real scary movie and feel the intensity of a real horror movie go see this movie!! There were also some incompetencies throughout. The entire movie cast is around 5 people excluding the killer missing kids with terrible make up. His not letting the Police department know what happened there at the house was off. The deputy's hesitant behavior was very odd and made me feel like he was involved with the murders but he wasn't. The biggest failure of the director was during the interview of the novelist's interview regarding one of his books named Kentucky Blood on TV he said he would prefer not writing any novels if he could find the justice for the murdered ones but a couple sequence later he makes a debate with his wife and tries to convince her that he has to write the book to make more money like making a movie project out of the story he was about to pen. That was a great inconsistency

The Master (2012)
9/10
Brilliantly made , superbly arranged
13 September 2012
I would have hard time rating this movie anything under 9 out of 10. I was fortunate to view the prescreening of this movie and I can flatout confess I was captivated from the first moment till the credits rolled. I gave the writer and also the director P.Thomas Anderson the benefit of the doubts before this movie and bit the bullet to see this long but in every single minute of it brilliant found movie. Watching Anderson's movies can be easy if you are taking a place in the auditorium just to watch it without understanding them. His movies require a great sense of intellectuality and wisdom to embed the main idea in your hearts then brains. He brings the arc to his cast in every line of his movies. Master is downright a masterpiece by Anderson that takes the audience from the end of the Second World war throughout the eye of a charismatic intellectual who creates a faith based organization in an attempt to provide meaning to his life in the bout of post-traumatic stress disorder which hits every single military man in the war. His seeing all the harrowing incidents in the military but his restless attempt to provide meaning to his life is something I appreciated a lot. 65/70mm shooting also made this movie more brilliant. If you have a chance to view this movie in this format you will be dragged in the era of the post-war. I loved everything about this movie. The music's slowly penetrating itself in the scenes contributed to the premise to make it more touching. The movie deals with an interesting idea of the leader vs. the soldier, master vs. slave. It breaks down the anatomy of a relationship so you may interpret it in any way you'd like. This movie is not predictable at all so you must be on alert every time not to miss anything. It is like riding in the spin class , once you give up you are dragged down to the fatigue and regret. If you are out there to decide to watch a great movie you are looking at the comment for a good one. You'll all love it.

The Possession (I) (2012)
horrible.
11 September 2012
I don't feel like I have to convince people of not watching this movie at all. As a horror movie avid person I am I loath to say it was downright one of the worst exorcism movies ever. The story is woven around a little girl's possession of a little box purchased at a yard sale. It's carrying the demonic spirit inside reminded me of the original Exorcist movie that people found the old relic in an excavation in North Africa. I just wonder why the screenplay of this movie is pretty much the holder of the key elements of the original Exorcist movie. The entire movie is another form of cliché movie genre which fell short of every single cinematography elements. The main substance is missing but a lot of branch-offs from the original Exorcist movie. People who have not had the opportunity to have watched the original Exorcist by Blatty's might like this movie but those of who have seen Exorcist will see what I am referring to. I am just tired of seeing allegedly horror movies in the movie theaters. I am very sad to have seen this movie was viewed by many. I rate this poor movie 1 out of 10. Save your hardly earned money by not seeing this terrible movie. Horrid acting, poor screenplay..

Lawless (2012)
7/10
a great movie by an Australian Director
27 August 2012
First off Lawless is one of the rarest movies ever depicting the Prohibition era of the United States dating back to 1920's. I am very impressed with the study of that era in this movie. Contrary to what many American directors have pulled off regarding this era the Australian director has exceeded many movie avids' expectations with this gritty movie. The only downside was I would want to see Gary Oldman to have more moments than what he was given for him . In cast wise I can tell that it is not stellar but still not fading away. I would want to see Jeff Bridges to have a casting in this superb movie.

Many movies which told stories of the past eras did not really weave the sociological impacts and influences of those times but the director and the photography artist must have studied hard before drawing the outline of this movie.Nothing falls short of the history. As a very anal person I am I paid a close attention to see any discrepancies but I was caught off-guard with the homework of the director and whoever was involved in the study of the history of that time . The scenery and the dialogues were meticulously intertwined and nothing falls short in cinematography. Bootleggers rise up against the authorities who entreat the profit in importunity. I liked the acting of Shia Lebouf. He was lost in Transformers but he found his incarnation in this movie. His talents and acting skills reminded me of Ed Norton and I believe he will carve his name in the movie chronicles more than what Norton did so far. I gave this movie the benefit of the doubt however it was up to par.

ParaNorman (2012)
10/10
quite an interesting animation movie with everything fun to entertain
16 August 2012
After seeing many low quality animation movies recently, Laika has made a masterpiece with Paranorman.I was anticipating this movie for a long time and it exceeded my expectations at a great extense. Laika is one of the best animation picture companies bringing innovations to this genre of movies rather than using old-fashioned and conventional methods to make movies. You see the cinematic difference all throughout this superb fun to watch movie. The story of this movie may sound a bit awkward but it is quite captivating throughout. It was my first experience ever to wait till the credits rolled to pay my appreciation to every single counterparts of this movie. The story is pretty much about a picked on and friendless kid who is becoming the hero of his town when a curse breaks loose in his small New England town.I enjoyed every single minute of this movie trying to see what Laika did differently than other companies could have done. If you are a huge fan of animation movies and also love 3D pictures go and see this movie. I give 10 out of 10 for this whimsical movie. Everything was up to par.It was fun to see the character development which was unorthodox and one-liners being cracked off by every single character in the movie was meticulous. The main character reminded me of the kid in the movie up of last year. I loved the cinematic aspect, too. Nothing really fell short of humor. I also liked the music.Everything was pair as a square! go and see this movie this weekend , you will be leaving the auditorium with a great smile. Watching a bad movie and leaving the auditorium with apprehension was my personal problem but Paranorman was terrific and made me smile till i drove back home .

The Campaign (2012)
8/10
long anticipated slapstick comedy
7 August 2012
We audience were waiting for a movie to make us laugh from the start till the end but we were pretty much darned because of sexual innuendos used in the movies which made us close our kids' sight during the movies. One of the worst things is confronting with unexpected story developments with a lot of puns which make me think they are unnecessary. I believe and root for the idea of non sexual contents to make movies reach their target of getting the audience near bursting into laughter mode. Real comedy movie lovers do not really like sex and nudity in the movies at all. The Campaign is one of them to me .I would totally fall in love with this movie if there was limited or no sexual content in it . Farrel's teaming up with Hollywood's funniest looking dude Zack is just a diamond in comedy genre. This movie captivated me although i was not expecting it to be well done. The script is too simple and it's simplicity is one of the key roles for comedy genre. You pretty much know what is going on then you feel the engrossing scrip to hit you more with laughs. Jokes are pretty well embellished with witty quips. Zack's awesome look has been conveyed from Hangover sequels but he is not weird in character as he is in the Campaign. I am not going to spoil the movie with telling you what the movie is about . If you are on IMDb to read the reviews to decide what movie you really want to watch I can recommend you this movie as it wont surprise you at all.I WARN YOU FOR THE SEXUAL CONTENT and it is an R rated movie. There are a lot of elements comprising this movie to be a funny one except for the need for the sexual content . The cast and screenplay are intertwined to make the audience laugh and have awesome time . I rate this movie 8 out of 10. There is nothing falling short . Cinematography has not been tainted by the director. I really appreciate this movie to be one of the rarest for a long time . Kudos to Farrel and Zack. they were darn awesome !!

Autopsy (2008)
1/10
poor script- terrible directing
2 August 2012
I just do not understand how on earth these people are given the budget to pull of these sort of movies with no backbone at all. I really thought it would be a good 1.5 hour of leisure on a scary movie but I was totally disappointed from the start to the end. Bunch of party animals have a crash in the middle of nowhere and they discover they actually have run over a man who sneaked out underneath the vehicle to grab one of the victims then everything picks up from that moment on. The ambulance arrives with two weird looking dudes taking the wounded person on the stretcher to embark him in the ambulance and thought nothing happened to the other people who actually ran over the guy are asked to get in the ambulance to have themselves checked at the hospital. The first thing I realized the ambulance was looking like one with the lights and stripes outside but when the door was opened it was nothing but the track to lay the gurney on. first off It is very unlikely for people to get in an ambulance with another patient who is in a critically bad condition second they would wait for cops to come and talk to them no matter what they are asked to do. When they are brought to the hospital they are welcomed by an odd nurse who is asking them to ''thoroughly fill out the forms'' which is nothing to do with the hospital's real concept second it was not done not to make the victims suspect of the hospital. It was just done to string the audience along with the movie. I was really trying to understand why the nurse was so high-strung all the time people were trying to speak with her and more oddly she had a very different accent than usual which did not really make the movie look scarier than it was.

Apparently the sick doctor is trying to find the right bone marrow or the organ to heal his beloved wife who is as sick as the doctor actually is. They are bringing people in and kill them to see if these people's anatomies are compatible with the doctor's wife. There are some moments like the naked's man storming in the room and collapsing on her spewing all his organs on the lead girl's face and her storming out of the room and more oddly the sick nurse's punching her blood soaking face but his hand's not getting any blood off of the girl's face. Failures and omissions are countless. The lead girl(Emily)tries to find her boy friend in the hospital and sees Jude( another victim) ripping his own arm and asking him what he is doing and he goes he is trying to find something under his skin and also saying he was given a pill. Then Emily tells him to stop and put a cloth on his ripped arm and they get out of the room and magically Jude's arm is perfectly and professionally wrapped. I think I don't really need to describe how awful this movie is . It is as bad as Human Centipede 2 . Years fly by but bad scary movies are still spot-on .

The Watch (I) (2012)
1/10
quite a boring script and poor acting
27 July 2012
If you are out there to see a movie this weekend to bore the heck out of yourselves it is the movie you should go and see. Wrapped around supposedly funny cast with a very predictable script to waste 1.5 hours of your life. At first glance I thought I would see a great slapstick comedy with an interesting script of otherworldly creatures attempt to invade a neighborhood and the men with humdrum lives getting together to form a neighborhood watch team protect their neighborhood from the aliens but the movie was not up to par at all. I think Ben Stiller can be funny when he is by himself than teaming up with others to be funny. I loved the Zoelander for sure , I loved all the Fockers sequels except for the Christmas one. I rate The watch 1 out of 10.

grotesque
18 July 2012
I resisted hard not to see this movie till it was available on Netflix. At first glance I thought I would see some cinematographic development throughout the movie along with some great casting but this movie failed both in cinematographic and casting aspect. There is no logical explanation about why the deranged, unhinged Martin want to implement the same sick idea of creating a human centipede given in the first movie he had his aspirations from. Film's black and white photography makes his actions even sicker than the sickest can think of. He is a sick and abused and totally secluded from the society due to his years of child abuse conducted by his own father and his mom's restless accusations of his sending his dad to the jail. None of these really make a person emulate what was done in a sick movie. When I watched the first movie I did not really feel that disgusted but the second one tore my appetite for scary movies upside down cause of the disgust and implacability, nastiness and remorselessness of the main character who wants to appease his sick cravings by torturing people. There are hundreds of plot holes and none of these holes really cover the ugliness of this movie. I felt like i was eating in the landfill due to starvation throughout this movie. It is drawn out around a sick minded screenplay which gives nothing but disgust in the end. I loathed this movie from the beginning to the end. I watched it to the end just to see some clemency in the end . If there are still some people who like this kind of sick movies no brainer the need for more shrinks.

A Haunting in Salem (2011 Video)
1/10
a great pattern of a failing cinematography
16 July 2012
This movie is a flat-out a big time waster. I really did not know what the director of this movie up to while helming it. The scenery starts off on the wrong foot by depicting somewhere not Salem as Salem. There are orange trees in the yard and I wonder if they have any geographical knowledge regarding the growth of oranges. I never knew and would never ever know Salem had actually the Mediterranean climate where you can grow oranges and bananas. Anyway I don't even find it necessary to even blabber things about this movie cause nothing is plausible. Poor acting and poor directing. The plot holes are too deep you can drive a dirt bike through. I would never ever recommend this movie to my worst arch enemy. I don't even know what the director thought with the lead cast of this movie. It is absolutely the worst scary movie ever . 0.1 out of 10.00

Caught Inside (2010)
1/10
caught in storytelling
10 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
At first glance I was thinking I would watch a good movie without referring to the reviews so I bit the bullet and laid down on my couch to see this movie on Netflix. I have to tell I was waiting all through the first 20 minutes to see what this movie could be about( I am just being sarcastic). I think the director just started off on the wrong foot by inputting unnecessarily long conversations of the cast which did not add up to the story of this movie. Bunch of people meet up to embark on a journey of surfing so they rent a boat and pack that small boat to cruise off to somewhere they can catch the best undulations and waves to do some surfing. They are pretty much acquaintances except for a guy named Bull and he is a total freak beating another surfer telling him to yield the wave he needs. He beats him in the water and off the water on the shore. The entire premise of the movie is actually based on the renderings given by the screenplay artist and the director so they use the guy to beat an innocent stranger just surfing in the area so everyone can see who the bad guy of the movie is . I think it would be very hard for the audience to see who the bad guy was going to be unless he beat the stranger surfer !!/Nothing adds up to the story. The guy named Bull is a great surfer and a womanizer character who has an eye on another guy's girl friend and he does everything possible to entice her. He follows the girl while she is sunbathing at the beach and he stealthily approaches her and spread the sunscreen on the girl's back pretending he is the girl's boy friend . Girl named Sam thinks the guy over her body is her boyfriend then she realizes he is not her boyfriend who is spreading the sunscreen on her back. She screams and throws a temper tantrum and her boy friend comes to the scene and the action kicks off. The captain of the boat rushes to the beach to intervene the scuffle between the bad guy and the good guy and warns the bad guy of what repercussions he would be having if he goes on doing what he tried to do. The bad guy refuses the accusations and throws the girl under the bus claiming she wanted him to spread the sunscreen on her back. Then they embark back on the boat then the bad guy goes to the room of the molested girl to apologize for what he had done but the molested girl opens up the polished and newly painted door of the room and squeezes the bottle of hairspray in Bulls' eyes, next the scuffle and unrest increase to where the captain of the boat takes the bad guy back the island's shore to warn him for the last time and tells him to spend the rest of the night on the shore by himself. Bull goes overboard and cusses out the people on the boat off the shore of the island. He waits there till the sunrise and swims back to the boat and takes the control of the boat leaving the captain and other two crews around looking for him to take him back to the boat.I am really tired of typing for a movie i hated watching .. Anyway If you have time to waste go ahead and watch it. If life is important and minutes of life can be evaluated to do other things than watching a dreary movie avoid this movie. If i could rate it 0 out of 10 I could. Evren Buyruk, USA

lately discovered thriller masterpiece
5 July 2012
I was a bit tentative to stream this movie on netflix till I worked up some nerves to give it a shot and spared my two hours of my life to enjoy this slow-paced movie. It was drawn out of a very sluggish story development displaying commotion on a cop's life which turns topsy -turvy after his son inadvertently gets involved in two homicides. The beginning of this movie is quite boring but then it speeds up to a great climax of events engrossing the viewer till the credits end. I liked the music and all the cinematography used in this frugally budgeted movie. I did not see it when it came to the theaters but did not pass up the chance to stream it online. If you are out there bored of your mind stream or rent this movie. It is a great movie. Evren Buyruk

Due Date (2010)
1/10
awful Robert Downey Jr
11 July 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I really need to say i tried my hardest to like the character of RDJ but no matter how much i tried i could not manage to like his character. RDJ casts a bad spell on his character he played as a man to rush to be with his wife expecting to deliver a baby in a c-section labor after some mishap taking place he is taken to the no fly list and gets kicked out the plane then he runs into Ethan who is supposedly the reason why RDJ is on the no fly list is a deranged character who has just lost his dad and wants to make all his dreams come true by going to Hollywood and appearing in the TV show called 2 and a half men. I was pretty hesitant about this duo to ensue a whole movie together without boring the audience however RDJ did his best to be an unlikable character who even performed unsettlingly atrocious personality like spitting on an innocent dog and attempting to get rid of the ashes of Ethan's father. His despising Ethan in every minute of the movie overshadowed doubts on the character of Ethan who is pretty funny with his funny accent and repeating how old he is over and over .Ethan's flamboyant personality matches with the role he was given except for the severe immoral masturbating graphics that was quite disgusting and unnecessary. I did not understand what the director of this movie thought by filming a moment like that. Was it to hit the adult audience and if so what about kids watching this movie? DJR boring and brooding personality made the movie quite a drama than a funny comedy.I could understand some uptight figure in the first 10 minutes of the movie cause Ethan was pretty much the reason why RDJ was kicked out the plane and put in the no fly zone but he was uptight and negative till the end of the movie. All of a sudden his great affinity and postulating his sympathy for Ethan after the Mexican breakout was so tacky and fake. I thought after this affinity of RDJ i was gonna see some better comedy but he pretty much messed it up punching on the face of Ethan after finding out Ethan kept his wallet not to be lonely. After watching the movie Soloist i had really lost a lot of credits on RDJ and i had really hated his weak character. I don't really think he should cast in a movie that is supposedly filmed as a comedy . RDJ is quite a boring actor with nothing worth wondering about him . I was gonna halt the movie in the first 20 minutes but i just felt indebted to Zack cause he was pretty good. Evren Buyruk from USA

Super 8 (2011)
a perfect throwback to the era of ET!
16 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Super 8 is one of the best summer kid movies in ages. In fact, it is a throwback to ET, The Goonies and other movies Spielberg (and Joe Dante) made so deftly in the 1980's. Amazingly, the movie set in the gateway to the 1980's: 1979. We begin with 12-year-old Joe (Joel Lamb) and his father, Jack (Kyle Chandler) dealing with the death of their mother and wife, respectively. As school lets out four months later, Joe wants to work with his friends, Charles, (Riley Griffiths), Cary (Ryan Lee), Preston (Zach Mills) and Martin (Gabriel Basso). The odd man (or woman) out is Alice Dainard (Elle Fanning) who wants to join them for a few scenes. They all meet at midnight to shoot a scene as a train passes by. Then, the train is derailed in a spectacular crash. Strangely, it was caused by someone deliberately driving on the tracks towards the train. It turns out to be their Jr. High Science Teacher who warns them to not say anything to protect themselves and their parents. The Air Force responds unusually fast - leaving the town police force (now led by Joe's father, Jack) in the dark of their work. At that same time, people, dogs, appliances, and car parts mysteriously disappear. Something is wondering the woods. Something escaped. Something dangerous. Or is it the Air Force that's dangerous. So much works for this film - mostly in story and acting. The kids involved pull off great performances, especially from newcomer Joel Courtney who takes the lead. He plays the role so well, shifting from friend with a bunch of Jr. High kids and an adolescent suffering from a lost mother and estranged father. Alice has her own problems stemming from her dad. Amazingly, all of them are intertwined in the drama that unfolds evenly. Another strength is the special effects, which are used as a background to the story as opposed to being the feature. This is related to the creature that is not fully seen until close to the end. And the story related to the alien is not as predictable as the one with the humans. More than anything else, though, it captures the mindset of seventh graders as they wonder through adolescence. The conversations have the same quick-wit and unfocused meandering in kids of that age. Everyone knew a Cary who liked to blow things up and play with fireworks. We knew a Charles as the bossy kid who has a passionate project. I did have two strikes against the movie: the third act was a little disjointed and did not provide cohesiveness. Also, the ending was a little abrupt. And while some people complain the ending was a little over-the-top, I think they forget the flying bicycles in E.T. Still, overall, it is far better than most summer movies of late. Not to say there are some good summer movies, but this one outshines most of them because Super 8 relies more on story and character instead of overblown special effects. It has the feel of a 1980's Spielberg movie and is taken in the same spirit. J.J. Abrams is one of the better talents who seems to have grown instead of stagnating and backsliding like M. Night Shyamalan. I look forward to Abrams next project ... as long as it is not a sequel to Super 8. Evren Buyruk

Piece of Director ingenuity
6 April 2011
I was a bit iffy to watch this movie since there were not enough eye popping advertisements with the advent of this movie . I was expecting a dull and dreary premise with quite an average acting from Russell Crowe however i was captivated with this movie from the start till the credits rolled. I ended up grinding my teeth and patiently waiting what next would have happened. A man's unfortunate life span is besieged by many mishaps and his wife's falsely being incarcerated. In the brink of an entire family falling apart like a big truck rips up a smooth golf course. John is a professor at a university and the movie pretty much starts when he quotes irrationalism and life forming around rational and irrational facts. When the movie advances to John's meticulous plan to flee his wife from the state prison he enacts all the irrationalism he has conquered to baffle all the law enforcement officials who follow up rational order of things. His putting up the blueprints of his runaway plan on the walls of his evicted house and police finding the piece of evidence purposely thrown in the dumpster is another way of thinking of irrational. it is worth watching every second of this movie. Meticulously perfect.

Case 39 (2009)
5/10
predictable and creepy
7 February 2011
Renée Zellweger is perfect as the horror movie queen being terrorized by a little girl who has been taken into state custody but who also just so happens to be possessed by a demon in the movie Case 39. From hornets crawling out of eye sockets to an attack by a crazy woman with burns all over her face to demon dogs straight out of the original movie The Omen to monstrous claw-hands popping out of all sorts of unexpected places ala end scene of Carrie, this no holds barred shocker will have you jumping out of your seat at least a half dozen times before it is all over. This is much scarier than the movie The Orphan. Fifteen-year-old Jodelle Micah, who has an unbelievable resume of acting credits for her age, is downright creepy playing a little girl who is perhaps nine or ten but who has the cunning of the devil himself. There are some great cameo parts, including Cynthia Stevenson, who is best known as the mother in Dead Like Me, and Ian McShane, who plays a detective and who looks like the priest from The Excorcist. This seems to be a remake of an old Twilight Zone episode about a young boy who holds a town hostage with his supernatural powers. This movie is very controversial because the villain is a small child but thankfully Zellweger attempts to stab her, burn her and drive her off a cliff without any concern for being politically correct. This is what horror movies are all about. Not for those with heart conditions.Evren Buyruk

The Rite (2011)
8/10
Survival of Exorcism sub-genre with the phenomenon acting by a giant actor
31 January 2011
The Rite looked like it would be a mixed bag right from the start. The film seemed to suffer the same fate many other films before it fell victim to and that's giving away too much of the storyline in the trailers. On top of that, it was a film that revolved around exorcism which is a subject that usually leads to disappointing results. Expectations would lead one to believe that The Rite would have enough momentum to reel you in only to drop the ball during its finale similar to last year's The Last Exorcism (except hopefully without the appearance of a neon red, glow in the dark fetus). Luckily, the film has a few surprises up its sleeve.

The cinematography in the film is probably the first thing you'll notice visually. The opening of the film makes things like dripping embalming fluid, a swing set on a playground, and an overturned shopping cart seem more interesting than they really are. Rain is an element used fairly often in the film to usually signify when something has gone wrong or is about to. Whether the camera is placed up high to make it seem like you're looking down on the cast from the heavens or down low as if you're looking up at them from the depths of the earth, the rain sequences in the film are definitely some of the most memorable due to the camera work.

This is probably a pretty obvious statement, but the film is worth seeing for Anthony Hopkins alone. It's not that Colin O'Donoghue does poorly since he certainly has a strong screen presence and does a fantastic job carrying the film, but Hopkins just manages to trump that while stealing every scene he's in and rightfully so. Father Lucas Trevant is the strongest and creepiest role Hopkins has played since Hannibal Lecter and his best role overall in years. It's just amazing seeing a man in his seventies give a performance that's this physical and this absorbing. Speaking of distinguished actors, it was nice seeing Rutger Hauer as well even if it was just for a small role.

The dream sequences and hallucinations in the film may have been my hands down favorite. I've always been a fan of the surreal, the imaginative, the creative, and the things that don't seem to make sense at first but gain meaning as the film or story progresses. I never thought I'd find myself intrigued with the actions of a mule or that frogs could have an even deeper meaning than what you're probably expecting, but The Rite accomplishes this very well.

Thankfully, The Rite delivers an exorcism film that is actually worth seeing. It'll probably be forgotten about in a year filled with so many blockbuster film releases, but considering that January and February are usually filled with such monstrous duds at the box office The Rite manages to surpass expectations. While the film does seem rather reminiscent of The Last Exorcism and borrows the atmosphere from the Heath Ledger film The Order, The Rite is actually a better experience overall. With an engrossing performance by Anthony Hopkins along with a fairly strong cast all around, its fantastic cinematography, surreal dream sequences, and a satisfying conclusion that doesn't hint at a sequel, The Rite is actually a surprisingly decent film all around. Tangled (2010)
10/10
Disney's ultimate comeback !!
28 November 2010
I was very sketchy walking into this movie. I didn't know what to expect, it's Disney which is promising, but it's also Disney's first CGI Disney movie that got a PG rating, so it seemed different. It was pretty hard for me to choose between 'Tangled' or 'Burlesque' but I'm glad I made the decision to watch 'Tangled'.

This film has everything, for everyone, boys girls and tongue in cheek humor for adults. It's Disney's answer to Shrek, but in a classy way, that doesn't feed off of pop culture.

The story of the film is simple. Rapunzel is a princess that has hair that has power to heal and keep people young, but once it's cut, it loses all power. When Rapunzel was just an infant she was kidnapped by an old woman who locked her away in a tower to keep her hair all to herself. Rapunzel grows up thinking that her kidnapper is in fact her mother, and the reason she's locked away is because her 'mother' wants to keep her safe from the hardships of the world. I'd tell you more about the movie but I don't want to ruin it. Let's just say she runs away. Very simple, fairy tale plot.

I was kind of saddened that Disney has succumbed to making Princess movies using CGI, but watching this movie I realize that some scenes wouldn't have the power it had, if it were in 2D. The lantern lighting scene, for example, was amazing. It wouldn't have been the same in 2D. The music, was perfect. Enough musical number to keep Disney fans more than satisfied and not enough to where it's overkill. The songs were heartfelt and meaningful, they all served a purpose, it wasn't just a nameless song thrown into the movie. The voice acting, by Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi were amazing. I was a little sketchy about Mandy. I'm a long time fan, but I wasn't sure if she had the right voice to be a Disney Princess. She gave Rapunzel so much life, and innocence, I couldn't think of any other actress who could play her better. Zachary gave Flynn life, and humor, and made him a very likable character. However, the two characters that stole the show were Pascal, the chameleon, and Maximus, the horse. Although these supporting characters have no speaking lines, through actions and emotions, you know exactly what they want to say, and the message comes in loud and clear.

This movie has enough action and comedy to keep boys happy and enough emotion, romance and drama to keep the girls happy. There are a few scenes that made me tear a little, well maybe more than a little. Some scenes have so much emotion and depth that it tugs at your heartstrings, and gives you goosebumps, especially the lantern scenes. Disney is testing the waters of their film making with this one. There were many alcohol references and even references about being drunk. There's violence, people getting stabbed, and yes, even blood. Which you never see is Disney movies.

Overall, I highly recommend this movie, to everyone. Anyone could enjoy this movie. It's very hard not to like it. With theater prices so high, I suggest you don't spend 10 dollars to watch Cher and Christina, but watch 'Tangled' instead. They don't make movies like this anymore. It's much better than last year's 'Princess and the Frog'. Rapunzel is now in the line-up of classic Disney princess. I cannot stress how amazing this film is. Go out and see it.Evren Buyruk from USA

Predators (2010)
8/10
mind-twisting reboot
13 July 2010
It is important to note that despite it's perspicuous title, Nimrod Antal's "Predators" is no reboot of its establishing material. It's a honest-to-goodness sequel to the first two Predators films; a long awaited one at that after a couple of detours into the realm of crossovers into the "Alien" universe. It does however represent a stylistic update and intriguing expansion of the franchise's filmic mythology that also spans Dark Horse Comics' graphic novels and its video games.

However, if there ever were to be a more convincing statement of intent in relaunching this franchise, it would have been putting its marquee producer Robert Rodriguez to work in a film so suited to his aesthetics and stylistic idiosyncrasies. But Rodriquez's pick to helm this film almost proves to be reason enough to watch this given that Nimrod Antal is one of the most exciting directors around these days. Antal's direction has always coincided with his a strong sense of atmosphere and character development. With his fascinating debut, "Kontroll" and his cleverly constructed meta-slasher, "Vacancy" as well as with last year's taut action spectacle "Armored", Antal has shown himself to be an effective genre director in that he's both comfortable in affirming a particular genre as he is deconstructing it. And in "Predators", he infuses it with not just a showcase of tried and tested sci-fi ideals but also a discernible impression of a robust horror film.

Antal keeps things moving along at an exhilarating pace by introducing a rag-tag team of mercenaries and criminals getting air-dropped into a highly tropical and vegetative alien planet tailored by the ruthless and single-minded Predator race as a game reserve for the insufficiently armed humans and other prey. Its mise-en-scene immediately hearkens back to the jungle warfare of the first "Predator". As the movie gods demand, the herd gets thinned as the race of alien hunters reveal themselves to be superior in both their technology and understanding of game theory. Kept alive by de facto leader, the preternaturally perspicacious Royce (Adrien Brody), the band of humans begin to formulate their plan of survival against the truly fearsome Predators and their formidable weaponry.

Brody's presence seems almost folly at first – a gruff vocal inflection worthy of Christian Bale's in "The Dark Knight" underscores a predictably rote tough guy but to his credit, a good actor always manages to sell his act despite himself. Like his character, who sees no virtue in human connection but instead adopts a ranger-like approach to survival, Brody doesn't seem to create much chemistry with his cast mates in his relatively new role as action hero. The rest of its main supporting cast are split of into archetypes – Alice Braga is Isabelle, an Israeli soldier and its burgeoning conscience, Topher Grace plays Dr. Edwin, the geeky comic relief and notably, the talented Walter Goggins of TV's "The Shield" and "Justified" is the smarmy knife-wielding death-row convict, Stans. Also, rounding of the surviving humans is the reticent Yakuza gangster, Hanzo (Louis Ozawa Changchien) and the relatively noble Chechnyan soldier, Nikolai (Oleg Taktarov).

Antal manages this character list well enough. As the chase progresses, you get a distinct feel of each human before they start to fall victim to their raison d'être. Besides a late flurry of actual and conspicuous violence, "Predators" actually fares better in its early scenes where the humans explore their predicament and the film plays the suspense card remarkably well. There's an actual interest in finding out the psyches of these mysterious humans who are hunters and monsters on Earth but scurrying mice on the Predator's turf.

If anything else, the script provides little genuine surprises in it storytelling. Given its inherent similarities, the film bares a stunning amount of resemblance to last year's terrific "Pandorum" – where a space crew wakes up with no memory onboard a vessel designed as a Noah's Ark of sorts to vicious creatures hunting them. There's a scene with Laurence Fishburne as the planet's loony veteran survivor that cribs more than just mood but actual dialogue from the superior film.

"Predators" doesn't change the game too much but as far as delivering a solid and experience to its fanbase, it releases itself from the shackles of relying on crossovers and re-establishes the Predator as one of Hollywood's most fertile sources of sci-fi villains. Evren Buyruk

a stayaway movie!!!
5 July 2010
The only thing I can really say about The Last Airbender is this: Epic Fail. Just how epic? Paramount Pictures gave M. Night Shyamalan $150 million dollars to adapt the popular Nickolodeon cartoon for the big screen. What they got is an absolute mess of a movie, complete with poor acting, the most hackneyed script ever, and a last-minute conversion to 3-D that only serves to destroys what was possibly some lush cinematography.

The Last Airbender is perhaps the worst film of the summer, a feat I thought Jonah Hex had locked down. However, Airbender makes a determined effort. Let me put it this way, as good as Toy Story 3 was, Airbender is just as bad. It was hard to find anything wrong with Toy Story 3. It is nigh impossible to find anything right with Airbender.

The story is ridiculously complex. In a world where people can manipulate (bend) the four elements of air, earth, fire and water, depending on their tribal affiliation, there exists a being (the Avatar) who can manipulate all four. This person is also the sole being capable of communing the the "spirit world" which serves to keep things in balance. This being went missing 100 years ago, only to be found in a giant ice sphere by two children of the water tribe. In the 100 years the Avatar has been gone, the Fire tribe has begun conquering the others, though we're never really told why. The disgraced Prince Zuko(Dev Patel, the Slumdog Millionaire himself) of the Fire tribe wants to the Avatar so he can return to his family. The Water children need to save the Avatar to ensure the Fire people don't win. For this point on it becomes to silly to try and summarize.

Shyamalan succumbs to his own hubris, loading the film with long, boring exposition communicated through long, boring speeches that I'm sure were meant to be inspirational. Instead they are clichéd, burdensome mounds of words that only slow down an already languidly paced film. He heaps some unnecessary narration on top of the exposition, condescending to the audience as he does it. Perhaps the narration was put in to help the film's target audience, the prepubescent b0ys and girls who watch the cartoon, understand where this convoluted story is going. Sadly, it doesn't. The dialogue is so corny, it left me squirming a little. Also bothersome is the ham-fisted way Shyamalan expounded his themes, which seem to be responsibility, responsibility, and the horror of industry destroying nature (lifted with little change from the Lord of the Rings). Seriously, the Fire people sail their world's oceans in giant steel yachts that feature gigantic smokestacks over visible flame. These stacks spew out a never ending cloud of dark, ashy smoke. The metaphor could not be more clear had it just been printed as a subtitle across the screen.

The acting is bad across the board. The child cast as Aan, the Avatar, Noah Ringer, a wooden child actor if there ever was one. He speaks his lines as if reciting them of a cue card just off screen. The two Water tribe children, Katara (Nicola Peltz) and Sokka (Jackson Rathbone) are no better. A colleague of mine I saw the film with noted that Rathbone seemed downright anxious every time he was on screen, delivering his lines tersely, with little emotion. The older actors just phone it in. The usually reliable Cliff Curtis looks bored stiff as the leader of the Fire people, while the main antagonist, a Fire general played by Aasif Mandvi, is neither menacing nor scary. He comes off as a schoolyard bully, all bluster and no balls. The only actor I found brought any sort of depth to his role was Shaun Toub (Yinsen from Iron Man). Playing Prince Zuko's Uncle Iroh, he's conflicted between his duty to the prince and his beliefs in the spirit world, something the Fire people have come to consider children's superstition.

Perhaps the most egregious error of the movie is the 3-D conversion. 3-D tends to suck all the light out of the images it portends to display, leaving viewers with a murky picture where shadow and light blend together. There are no crisp lines in the film, no real detail. Which is a shame, as the film's setting should've been its biggest strength. The movie travels from an arctic campsite, where the whites should have popped against the bluish hues of the ice and water around it. When it travels to warmer climates, the greens and browns should have been awe-inspiring. It's not. It all looks faded. Much as with Clash of the Titans, the 3-D is barely noticeable throughout the film, and contributes nothing. I fear that Hollywood has cynically latched onto this fad for the high ticket price it commands rather than for any real artistic merit. My only relief was the movie was short, so I didn't get the usual headache 3-D movies tend to give me.

I didn't expect much going into The Last Airbender. However, I didn't expect it to be quite so bad. It's like watching a train wreck unfold over 94 minutes. The problem is, that 94 minutes feels like an eternity. The end of the film hints at a sequel. I hope some divine being takes mercy on us all and never lets that happen. Evren Buyruk

genre: slapstick, sappy comedy which takes you nowhere but boredom
9 June 2010
Firstly, I love Russell Brand. Secondly, I have seen but pretty much hated My Favorite Year. I thought this was going to be the same thing. It is and then it isn't. It's not as much of a comedy to be honest. And they totally sell it as a comedy, which they do with all Apatow movies and I don't know why. Forgetting Sarah Marshall to me was barely a comedy because it's about a guy who is depressed the whole time. This isn't really that different. Just in this case it's a drug addict rock star who is pretty much headed on the road that many people have taken in recent years and ended up as a breaking news obit at the top of this website. It's another bromance as well, which is fine by me. All these movies are more sentimental than they'd have you believe in the trailers. I personally think that's detrimental to the movie because it makes people expect one thing and get another and then write on the internet how disappointed they are. Problem is, it's not a bad movie. It's actually a good movie about the record industry and people and how they treat each other in such a ridiculous lifestyle with some funny bits thrown in.

I love Russell Brand and Jonah Hill together. I think they have the best chemistry. Their scenes together, pretty much the whole film, were more personal than funny. The more comedic parts usually happen when other people enter the mix. P. Diddy, for example, had a much larger role than I expected and he was okay in it. I probably would have cast an actor with more comedy experience, as well as choosing a different rock star cameo for Jackie Q's other love interest. But apart from that I really have no complaints. Perhaps I would have used more of Aldous' songs throughout the film, but that's because I quite like Brand's voice. I don't know that it was necessary for the plot.

Other stuff. It's an R for a reason. There's sex humor and drug stuff going on. There are some breasts but not much else in the nudity dept. that I can recall. I guess I'd recommend it for people like me who like English rock stars and comedies with warm fuzzies.Evren Buyruk

Not bad but is not as good as the first two predecessors
27 May 2010
It's not really cool to like Dreamworks Animation anymore. Sure, they're not Pixar. Sure, they're too hung up on star power and pop culture references. But I've still enjoyed the majority their films more than I have a lot of what's out there. And I love the first two "Shrek" movies. Their funny, entertaining, terrifically animated, and, too me, some of the best animated love stories that have been made. Most fairy tale romances perpetuate the idea that love is for beautiful people (even the masterpiece "Beauty and the Beast" has it's cake and eats it too on this point), and Princes and Princesses are better than common people. "Shrek"'s idea of finding happiness in who you are was much more palatable to me. i found the first film a delight, and the second even better.

But the third was only okay. The humor wasn't nearly as clever or funny, and the heart just wasn't there like it used to be. "Shrek Forever After" isn't as good as those first two. But it's a big step back in the right direction.

The story begins with Shrek getting used to being a father. He loves Fiona and the kids, but he misses his old life as a menacing ogre. He's seen more as a lovable tourist attraction now, and he doesn't like it. So, he makes a deal with the mysterious Rumpletiltskin (surprisingly NOT voiced by a name actor) to get one day back in his old life. In exchange, he gives up one day from his past. A day from his childhood that he doesn't even remember.

Unfortuntaely, that day turns out to be the day he was born, and this leads to an "It's a Wonderful Life" scenario where Shrek doesn't know Fiona, Donkey, Puss-in-Boots, or any of his friends, and Rumplestiltskin rules the Kingdom with a tiny iron fist. The resulting story is a great deal of fun, with Fiona now a warrior leading an ogre rebellion, the Gingerbread Man fighting as a gladiator against Animal Crackers, and so forth. The humor isn't back to it's highest heights, but there are a good number of genuine laughs. And the heart is back bigtime. I found "Shrek Forever After" surprisingly touching..

Okay, it's not as good as "Toy Story 3" is likely to be, nor is it as good as "How to train your Dragon". but I had a blast with "Shrek Forver After" Evren Buyruk
