Sean Saves the World (2013)
It's Actually Not All About Sean
Sean Saves the World sometimes gets it right. Sean Hayes occasionally delivers the great one-liner in his portrayal of Sean, a single father left in charge of his daughter Ellie (Samantha Isler) when his ex-wife moved to New York. His character is not as off the wall as it was in Will and Grace. He's not as overly dramatic and excitable as he once was. Still has the same flare, just not as loud. I agree with another reviewer that the highlight of the show is Thomas Lennon who plays Sean's new boss, Max. Since seeing Lennon in Seventeen Again and tiny parts like Doug in I Love You, Man I've been amazed at his comedic ability. He's like Jane Lynch, a great character actor that can make any part his own, even if the script is a tad weak. With him on board I see potential in this show.
The Originals (2013)
The Originals- It will get better
Being a fan of The Vampire Diaries, I was expecting something new and exciting from The Originals. The premise of the show is that Klaus, (Joseph Morgan), a hybrid vampire of the Original Vampire family, has decided to leave Mystic Falls and return to New Orleans to confront a witch, Jane Ann Deveraux (Malaya Rivera Drew), whom is conspiring against him. New Orleans is a special place for Klaus because centuries ago he was the most powerful vampire in that area. Once he returns to New Orleans he discovers his old mentee, Marcel (Charles Michael Davis), has taken control of the city. Klaus' lust for power grows in their interactions, causing him to want to take the city back. In confronting the witches a former lover comes into play, Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin), whom Klaus finds out is carrying his child, and will only remain safe if he helps the witches to take down Marcel.
The pilot episode of The Originals was disappointing, because it was something that I had already seen. After the initial narration, I learned that the episode was merely a repeat of a previous Vampire Diaries episode (episode 20 of last season entitled "The Originals"). There is a slight twist at the end, a new clip that was added, which I guess qualifies the episode to be advertised as a "Director's Cut." The show overall would have benefited from a "previously on The Originals," with a few clips shown from The Vampire Diaries episode to refresh our memories, while the rest of the show could have been a continuation of those clips. I have faith in The Vampire Diaries writers that they can come up with story lines for these characters that are engaging and intense. My only concern is that these actors will not be able to carry an entire show. Joseph Morgan played well off The Vampire Diaries cast, but will he be able to have the same chemistry with new characters?
