Extraction (2020)
Best Action movie since Terminator 2
The entire plot is contained in the film's title. It's about the rescue of a kidnapped boy in Bangladesh and a team of Australian mercenaries is supposed to fix it.
+ The best action scenes since Terminator 2.
+ Excellent first feature from a director who previously worked as a stuntman
+ Chris Hemsworth fits perfectly as the lead
+ Few cuts, down to earth fights
+ The main and supporting actors often have to work as a team, Rambo style alone is not always enough
+ Everyone, including and especially Hemsworth, is shown as vulnerable
+ Despite plot armor, Hemsworth's character keeps making mistakes he has to correct....
+ ... and also shows emotions again and again
+ The story has exciting turning points....
- ... but of course it's still shallow and far-fetched
- At times the otherwise relatively down-to-earth film drifts unnecessarily into the absurd - whenever the protagonists get unnecessarily many disposable enemies in their faces, which they then effortlessly kill - far too many for my taste
- Hemsworth uses a lot of ammunition for someone with limited ammunition.
Conclusion: A mix of Rambo, Terminator 2 and Tears of the Sun, but still original and very well done by all rules of action art. A few cliché weaknesses and a not quite well thought-out plot are missing for the best rating.
Svidetel (2023)
Every lie we tell incurs a debt to the truth. And. sooner or later, the debt is paid.
That quote from HBOs Chernobyl series can be applied wonderfully at this movie. Full of made up lies, this movie is trying to give the unprovoked and senseless invasion of Ukraine by Russia a purpose by showing us a fictional "Ukrainian" village where a fictional "genocide" was supposed to have happened. None of this is true of course, but even besides that you can see that the movie was filmed in a way to bring it out as soon as possible with little to no care and craftmanship whatsoever. The actors are bad, the plot as I pointed out is completely fictional, the soundtrack is inappropriate. By the way, when the US invaded Iraq I dont remember Hollywood producing movies which spread lies about Saddam Husseins weapons of mass destruction. The fact that Russia is in need of such cheap propaganda movies should tell you everything about this unjustifiable war.
Anyway, 250.000 Russians already had to pay their debt to the truth, more to come. This movie wont change anything about that fact.
The Last of Us (2023)
Review from a gamer who didnt play any of the Last of Us games
TLOUs strengths are the two protagonists, portrayed very well by Pascal and Ramsey. None of them looks like their video game counterpart (I didnt play the games but I know how they look like) but their acting skills are top notch. I also liked most of the dialogs and the design of the Infected.
Unfortunately, TLOU has two massive weaknesses which ruin the experience. The first weakness is that it portrays a 4000 miles (6000 km) long journey through a postapocalyptic world in just 9 Episodes. Nope, its actually just 6 (!) Episodes as 3 Episodes are flashbacks showing something that happened before the journey. As a result, everything is extremely rushed, new characters and antagonists appear and disappear forever within just one single episode. Action scenes are shown for just a few seconds and then they are already over. Many crucial, difficult tasks are skipped altogether and we are only shown the results. The second weakness is that the Infected are shown not only a few times, they are also never pprtrayed as a threat. They seem like some kind of annoying background noise our protagonists have to deal with every 2nd or 3rd episode.
Other, smaller things I did not like was the transformation of Joel from a broken but strong and kind man into a blood thirsty psychopath who mass murders innocent people without hesitation. Also, especially in the later episodes, both protagonists, but especially Joel execute entire platoons of well armed and experienced soldiers armed with nothing more than a knife in the beignning and in one instance even just after they wake up from a week long coma and going immediately full Rambo. But in this regard, I understand that this is exactly what happens in the game probably, where you just dont notice it because you have to respawn multiple times before you accomplish it.
To sum up, this season should have had 20 episodes with 3 of them being flashbacks instead of 9 episodes with 3 of them being flashbacks. The way they did it, completely ruined the experience for me. It felt like a series of trailers for the game and worked quite well in that regard.
Im Westen nichts Neues (2022)
Best Movie ever, I have no more words. Just go and see it.
I knew a lot about the First World War before I watched this movie, but I still learned a lot. Especially in our times, after Russia has brought war back to Europe, this is an absolute must-see. The nature of war, the scenes of horror, the struggle for survival, just to push lines of control a few meters back and fourth while individual lives are being thrown away in an instant and without hesitation. Sure, movies like these have been done a lot before. But what you get here additionally is an almost ridiculously well shot and crafted movie which does allow you to focus on what it tries to tell you: That wars and battles belong into museums, movies, games and history books and not into Europe (and elsewhere) in 2022. Donated to Ukrainian Armed Forces straight away after seeing this movie.
Mr. Jones (2019)
This movie has only one weakness...
... it is way too short! Gareth Jones' short life is filled with historical moments, but neither his Interview with Hitler in persona, nor his presence in Nazi germany during the Nazis coup d'etat, not even his death in Manchuria during the Japanese invasion. Besides, this is an excellent movie about a lesser known event in history, compared to its death toll, the Holodomor famine which millions of Eastern European did not survive. Hopefully, we will get a lot more movies like these in the future.
Game of Thrones: The Iron Throne (2019)
Horrific end to a abysmal season
Nothing makes sense anymore - the two writers, Benioff and Weiss, have forever ruined this cinematic marvel with a last season and especially a final episode that makes no sense and throws out of the window everything the show has built upon.
Chernobyl (2019)
Authentic and scary masterpiece
This series is a timetravel experience right back to the moment when the first major nuclear accident happened. My parents experienced the aftermath of these events in the nearby city of Kiev and said that the show has a great authenticity when it comes to bring back Soviet World of 1980ies back. The atmosphere is reminding you that radioactivity is a deadly threat you cannot see until you start suffering - in some parts the series like a great horror movie. The only slighlty negative thing I noticed was the strong british accent of some actors. Nonetheless a Must See, definitely.
Game of Thrones: The Last of the Starks (2019)
I am so confused
This episode was atrocious. Again, the writers and the director think that the people watching Game of Thrones do not care about anything any more. So what happens in this episode? A lot of cringy pseudo-philosophical talking, a lot of teleportation and dumb cuts, a lot of pseudo-emotional stuff where you get even bored to roll your eyes at. These people who are in charge of Game of Thornes now, they have absolutely no clue how to finish this series in a manner that it is being remembered well. Instead, they destroyed in two episodes George R. R. Martins work of decades.
Game of Thrones: The Long Night (2019)
So many questions
Why is the cavalry thrown away for nothing?
Why are the catapults positioned in front of the infantry?
Why are the bowmen not on the walls but behind them?
Why cannot Arya sneak behind three walkers but sneak behind thousands of them and slay the Night King?
Why can the Zombie Dragon destroy a massive Wall but not a small Stone where Jon Snow is hiding behind?
Why does Sam and almost every other character survive unsurvivable situations during the battle?
Why did Melisandre die?
What did Bran intend to do with the Raven?
Why did the weak people fight in a cemetary against an opponent who can bring the dead back to life?
What did the Witch Generals do beaide nothing?
Why were the authors drunk when writing this script?
