Beast of Burden (2018)
So bad it's good?
Beast of Burden can probably be classified as a 'so bad it's good' situation. If you stop thinking about how boring it is, it can be actually entertaining. But no, seriously, the film is pointless.
There is an easy to follow storyline, yet executed very poorly. The choice of storytelling through phone calls is irritating, I hate phone calls, and the phone calls here are neverending and very triggering for a phone call anxiety... Why on earth no one thought about tracking his calls, like there's a drone and helicopters, and these people couldn't afford to put a basic listening device somewhere.
Maybe the idea sounded good on paper, it's an experimental thing and I understand why it may seem interesting at a first glance. Maybe with better directing it could have been a special one actor film, where viewers are left in awe by the striking performance. It didn't quite happen though. The whole ending scene, which for a change takes place outside the plane, is executed on a kindergarten play level.
I don't regret watching this film, Daniel Radcliffe earnestly tried to bring out the vision of a desperate character stuck in a situation he doesn't want. He is a good actor, brilliant even. But not here. Too bad the film had low budget and the tactic for delivering tension flopped miserably. It's simply not something that can be saved by one actor.
