Deep Water (2022)
The film was supposed to be called DEEP BOTTOM
I have always been not indifferent to the films of Adrian Lyne. I am very interested in how the director works with the actors and the script. I love to watch all his films (with the exception of LOLITA). Lyne always very skillfully and competently showed human weaknesses and vices. That's basically what I like about his films. It was as if he explored the nature of human vices... If we talk about the moral and ethical side of films, then Adrian Lyne often crossed this line, but at the same time he skillfully explained how and why the characters of his films do this. Or at least his films made the audience think seriously and ask questions myself...
Regarding DEEP WATERS... As soon as I learned that mr. Lyne returned after a 20-year directorial break with a new film, I, like a child, was lit up with the desire to see what such a provocative and interesting thing he would give us.
My expectations were in vain. I will explain why this is so.
First of all, after watching film, there were even more questions than at the beginning of the film. Ok, well, why live with a person who humiliates you in front of everyone, including in front of your own child? But this was not enough for the director, and he went even further and showed how the nymphomaniac wife brings her boyfriends in full view of everyone, and in the presence a CHILD !! THIS IS normal?! Hardly... And not a normal husband is one who tolerates such an attitude towards himself. His deviantness just revealed itself in the fact that he, like a maniac, killed her lovers. He could just divorce this slutt, thereby saving himself and their child from mental suffering. I understand that in the modern world, where morality has long begun to decompose and stink, many will not see anything wrong with the actions of both characters. Back in 1989, director Brian Yuzna wittily noticed this moment in his film SOCIETY (1989), where he ridiculed high society in a comic and absurd form (I also did review this film).
If I start to begin to discuss in detail and analyze the actions of the heroes, I will not have enough time or energy. Let me just say briefly - the actions are illogical and stupid. In real life, such couples need the help of a psychiatrist, since both clearly have mental problems. There is nothing to think about here ... A specialist should deal with this. The ending of the film is, to put it mildly, fake and unrealistic.
If you take the director's previous films, then one way or another he managed to try to figure out or hint why the characters in his film act so disgustingly, and also show that such actions have very bad consequences and punishment for their deeds. In the same film, there is not a single positive character and one who could sympathize with. All are sucks. No one repented or realized their mistakes. Their actions are just wild trash. And behind this dubious couple, a psychiatric hospital has been 'crying' for a long time. If it is even easier to formulate the plot: a story about a prostitute and a sucker who, for some vague reason, decided that they kind of "love" each other and decided to tie the knot.
On the positive side, we can note the quality work of the director of photography, editing and excellent original music by Marco Beltrami. The composer really managed to create a good score with deep and sensual themes, which is quite surprising for me, since before his scores meant nothing to me at all and rather annoyed me.
Only to respect the legacy of Adrian Lyne and to the advantages listed above, I will put 5/10.
Can't recommend this film...
Society (1989)
Best Brian Yuzna Film
I came across this film quite by accident: I had heard about RE-ANIMATOR for a long time and so I decided to watch it one evening. On the whole, I liked the movie. I'm interested in film adaptations of Lovecraft's works. Since Yuzna's name appeared in both films, I decided to watch his filmography and saw SOCIETY. After reading the short synopsis, I became quite curious, because I like films where there is various conspiracies and mistery.
From the first minutes I liked the film: a sense of uncertainty, duality and paranoia. Along with that, I liked how the film ''flies'' around with elements of an 80s teen comedy-drama. The director portrayed Billy's emotional state in an attractive way. There is enough humor in the film, but it is appropriate and funny. I think the actors are well chosen and they portray their characters well. Also very cool camera work, especially work with light. Very well-to-do Beverly Hills is depicted in bright and colorful colors. The script is just cool - many of the characters' phrases are very sunk. Practical and visual effects are also on top. Japanese special effects artist Screaming Mad George deserves special praise. Last but not least, the electronic score by Mark Ryder and Phil Davies: the music precisely and correctly emphasizes the right moments and sets the right dark and tense tone for the plot. In more relaxed family and love scenes, pleasant and lyrical grooves sound. Too bad the score hasn't been officially released yet. By the way, on the part of the director it was quite a smart and appropriate move to use the famous song "ETON BOAT SONG", but with a new arranged and lyrics.
I would like to say that I really like this film, literally in all aspects. I like the overall atmosphere and tone of the film. I like that the director put social satire into the film and satirized it in a rather surreal and original. I will not be very "philosophizing" here about the meaning in the film. I will only say that despite the fact that technically the film is a bit outdated, its ideas, topics raised and issues were relevant both then, in the 80s, and now . By genre, it is difficult to define this film in one or two words. Most of the film is a tense, psychological and convoluted thriller with comedy elements, while the other 20-30 minutes of the film is a crazy boddy horror.
By the way, I do not have any nostalgia for the 80s, which could somehow "connect" the film. I was born when the film had already been shot for three years. I watched it this year, 2023, when the current society is already living with new (more precisely, with added) problems and relevant topics. And when I use the word "society" here, I mean it more in the context of this film;). The film can scare not so visual so some kind of warning and message. Believe me, I heard various strange, and even shocking stories about the rich from real people.
Considering that this is an independent film, with a small budget (a little over 2 million $), I am pleasantly surprised how everything in the film is done with high quality and there is attention to the smallest details. Of course, the film is not for a wide audience, but it is worthy of attention and praise. It really hooked me and I will watch it more than once. The film has a few nasty moments by all body horror standards, but for good reason, unlike Cronenberg's sickening f**ck-up. Where he himself admitted that his films do not carry any meaning or ideas.
I would have looked with great interest at a sequel that unfortunately never happened. Maybe I'm biased towards this movie, but my rating is 9, 5/10.
P. S. Sorry for bad English:)
