The Sympathizer (2024)
Oh damn
I was expecting a spy thriller, something interesting with a vaguely historical background but definitely not this.
The first episode is an exception, but for the rest it is mainly a long series in which we look at the life of our protagonist (Vietnamese spy in the USA) whose mission is to report to the Vietnamese communists about the situation in America .
I move very quickly to the revisionist side of history, we would like to believe that the USA helped South Vietnam to fight the evil communists of the North. The documented reality is that America invaded South Vietnam and was fighting primarily against the South Vietnamese resistance. The best example is that the famous 'Vietcong' that we hear in all the movies means South Vietnamese resistance fighters, there were relatively few North Vietnamese fighters.
But after all it's Hollywood, we're not close to an approximation in terms of history. Especially when it concerns American patriotism.
Where this poses a problem, in my opinion, is that the series is actually intended to be a discovery of America by our protagonist, leading him to comical and eccentric situations. The meeting with the oriental language teacher, the dinner where we learn that he likes to compare himself to eggs, his secretary of Japanese origin, etc...
We feel that in the mind of the creator, all these situations are supposed to be comical but unfortunately it is a failure. It's the type of humor you find in films made in Hollywood, personally it's not my style at all.
When you remove the historical aspect, the spy thriller, and even the humorous aspect is missed, there isn't much left. It's good for sleeping, yes.
I give 3 stars because it will allow me to go to bed early 😂
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
A turnip
It is difficult to understand how this film can be described as a "masterpiece".
As a reminder, when the film was released, we had already been entitled to Romero's "the night of the living dead", which is at least as much scary.
I suppose that its name "chain saw massacre" (when it is actually very little used), its ban in several countries and the resulting buzz have been enough for some to make it a cult film.
The story is extremely predictable, the acting is very average, especially the killer in some scenes who becomes ridiculous. On the other hand, I noticed a rather good soundtrack.
The first part where tension is raised with the disturbed auto stopper and the "half inbred, half retarded" atmosphere of Texas is the most successful.
The other two third are below average.
Cannibal Holocaust (1980)
Low budget movie, but a powerful one
I looked at it without having heard of polemics about animal torture and others. But I must say that it was, with "requiem for a massacre", one of the films that gave me the most emotions.
So no, it's not necessarily an ultra-deep reflection on the human condition and pseudo-civilization which is on certain aspects wilder than the savages but it is not necessary.
It's an ultra simple story: 4 Americans who go film primitive tribes in the Amazon engage in more than unhealthy acts in order to produce increasingly sensational images. They are killed by the Amazons. End.
But the way in which the film 'camera on the shoulder' is made, the silent rushes incorporated into the film, the scene of the 'diaphragm' on the plane, etc. Contribute to integrating the spectator into the story and makes it awesome.
I learned to hate them and enjoyed seeing them getting killed/rapped. What more to ask from a movie ?
To watch with family preferably :)
Le corbeau (1943)
The proof that big money doesn't mean great movie
This is a movie made in 1943, in France and produced by a German company. Goebels required that French made more movies and is literally the reason why they were able to make this film !
If only he knew that it wasn't going to be some braindead movie like he requested, but instead have a very clear message. It's an huge blow at people sending anonymous letters to government to get jews, resistants and any people they didn't like arrested or killed.
Obviously he couldn't make it so obvious, so instead they tell a story that happened way before the second word war in a small town, but the result is exactly the same. The viewer hates people sending these anonymous letters.
And the scene about "there is no evil/bad, only some shade of evil/bad" told by someone that we would later discover was in fact the culprit.
Thanks god, the people at nazi and vichy government weren't smart enough to understand that. But this baffle me they were able to produce it during occupation, with German money :)
Later, Clouzot the director, would get in trouble with Goebels, the vichy government AND the French resistance !
This movie needed big balls to make, it's a shame he got banned from making movie after the liberation. Although it was short, he should have get a medal for that.
Paths of Glory (1957)
I don't get why it's rated so great
The movie is about relations in the army between high ranking officers and soldiers. How one can sacrifice other lives, only to get promotion or fame.
And I get it, it's a very interesting subject and I think it needed courage to make a movie about it in 1957.
But the way the trial and the execution is shown just kills the movie :
First, how is a French martial court supposed to behave like a freaking usa court ? There is no "objection" in French system. The prosecutor and 'defense' don't behave at all like that. The court president can't do half of what is shown in the move, ...
I would be fine it was about Korean War, or any conflict that involved USA but here it's France.
And it's not like some trials between 14 and 18 didn't result in the same manner, there was execution for the exemple.
Why couldn't the producer stick a little bit to history if he decided to go for French history ?
The execution although I don't know how it happens in the USA, is certainly not how it happened in France during First World War.
The whole movie feel British, or American but certainly not about French army. I understand why it got banned, not because of the movie subject, but because of the travesty of the French army officers in some kind of British style nobility, with a fake American trial and a god knows what execution.
Jagten (2012)
what harm can a little lie do ?
This movie is about stupidity and incompetence.
An angry mob, fueled with false accusations and lies from both kids and adults, makes a nightmare of someone else life.
That's all there is to say story wise...
but the greatness of this movie is in the accuracy it describes such situation and the passion felt all along.
The Guilty (2021)
Copy paste but worst
2013 Dannish film is awesome, mostly thanks to its incredible story telling.
This movie, I can't even call it a remake, it's literally word for word, scene for scene a copy paste. The only few scenes added just make it worst.
A Quiet Place Part II (2020)
Boring
In my opinion a movie HAS to be entertaining. It can brings other thing, but first it must be entertaining.
For those who already watched A quiet place first movie, you will probably get annoyed by some incoherence between the two part. Especially when at the end of part 1, the woman is attracting as much alien as she can because she is a "badass" and found a way to kill them (no spoiler), but beginning part 2 it seem like this wasn't as effective and she isn't a badass at all.
Part 1 had a clear storyline, tension and you wondered how things would go.
Part 2 is a mix of scenes that taken alone looks good, but mixed together it doesn't make a story and is quite boring.
My review may be biased, I fell asleep around the half of it and only briefly woke up every 5 to 10 minutes to get bored over and over.
Blood Red Sky (2021)
Great adrenalin movie
The story is quite interesting at first, especially when we learn about the background of the main character.
The second half of the movie may not be that interesting on a story/scenario part, it still manage to remain entertaining because of the very fast action scene.
Usually in these movies, we get a broken scenario and only actions scenes. Here it's much better on the scenario and as good on action, so I believe it deserve a 7,5/10.
Some bad things :
The English voice are not really good.
The kid that can become annoying during some scene.
The darkness of the movie, I mean literary : the movie is very dark, it is difficult at times to follow the action because I couldn't see anything.
Overall a good experience.
The Serpent (2021)
Way over the top
Please stop making Jenna Coleman speak french. She has horrible accent. I am french and can't even understand what she says half the time.
It feels like the producer decided to make her speak french because it's sexy. She sure has very beautifull voice but it's not french.
The way the tv show feels exactly like this issue, i felt like they needed to make it way more impressive and glamor than it really was. I understand it's the way mainstream tv show must do to get a lot of viewer, but the story is lost with that.
It's like the sex scene in games of thrones, most are useles to the story and only here to keep the viewer hooked.
While on GOT it is just a quick event, on this show it is always there. I couldn't force myself to watch beyond episode 3.
Not everything in the show is bad however, the music, the photography and the job done on clothes and car is very good.
The Outsider: Must/Can't (2020)
Last episode was not interesting
I loved the serie from episode 1 to episode 9 but the last one is very slow and boring once "EL CUCO" is dead.
Honestly i kept going forward again and again until something happens, sadly it didn't.
And the last scene with holy being maybe "infected" is not on the level of the serie, it should have stop when they finally killed the monster. I believe they had to make a 50 min episode but without content.
