The Virginian: The Good-Hearted Badman (1968)
Very Good Episode
This is a very good episode. Elizabeth finds outlaw Jim Dewey wounded, gets her uncle and they take him back to Shiloh where they nurse him back to health. John Larch is perfect in the roll of bounty hunter Ben Hicks who would rather kill his prey than take him back alive. Since Clay thwarts his efforts, he hires n'er do well drifters to help him. Handsome Pete Duel is wonderful as the outlaw Jim Dewey, who teenage Elizabeth falls for and believes all of his lies as well as everthing written about him in dime novels. After all, what teenage girl wouldn't fall for such a hansome, charming man? I know I did when I saw him in Alias Smith and Jones and his death was a tragedy. RIP Pete.
The Virginian: Sue Ann (1967)
Lackluster Episode
This was not Patty Duke's best performance. She plays Sue Ann, a poor farm girl who runs away from home, heading for San Francisco, only to end up working as a saloon girl in Medicine Bow. She had to have been the saddest saloon girl ever and never smiled everytime she was shown on camera in the saloon. I wish they would have picked someone besides Paul Carr to play Joe. He alway looks like he's been sucking on lemons. The majority of his rolls are similar to this one, the poor, sad, helpless guy that everyone picks on. He always seems to end up crying in every roll he takes. His character is in love with Patty Duke's character, but he never has the courage to ask her to marry him. The ending is too predictable and Patty Duke's character is no better off than she was at the beginning. .
Tales of Wells Fargo: Don't Wake a Tiger (1962)
Overdone Plot
Almost every western series has this exact same plot. Ex Confederate POWs or soldiers don't like the way they and/or a family member were treated in a prison camp, so they decide to take revenge on the commander of the POW camp years after the war has ended. It doesn't matter how many years it's been since the war ended or if the former commander is sick or lame, the bullies have to take their revenge. Of course nothing is ever said about the treatment Union POWs received at the hands of the Confederates. It's always ex Confederate POWs who thought they were mistreated. They always seem to forget that supplies were short on both sides of the war.
