Renfield (2023)
Classic goofy Nicholas Cage - watch and enjoy
This movie won't rank as a great depiction of Dracula. Renfield is classic goofy Nicholas Cage and should be seen as camp fun and nothing else. Nicholas Hoult reveals a great comedic touch and I hope he does more humorous parts in future as he's got an almost Cary Grant like approach to being funny. Anybody taking this film seriously can't have watched Cage's previous offerings. This is what he specialises in. Total goofball. Renfield is cinema in the tradition of Mel Brooks - cheeky, absurd, and corny jokes. In fairness, it's tightly scripted, strong characters, and is never boring. A refreshing return to the kind of movies that were more common in the 1970s and 1980s.
Paris Police 1905 (2022)
Great characters but plot collapses at the end
This was a slow burn in the first two episodes but then took off with deliciously horrible characters and the actors clearly enjoying getting their teeth into it.
Then in episode six, it just speeded to a very unsatisfactory conclusion. Very plot point was hastily addressed with no real tension or sense of reveal - and no final dramatic pinch point when all could be lost. Really deflating considering how much promise it has.
You were left wondering what happened to the chap who was found dead in the Bois de Boulogne in episode one? There was no sense of going back to that crime with a definitive answer. And why were we wasting time with the pathologist trying to invent a solution for traffic problems in Paris - how did that relate to the overall plot?
Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018)
No cliche left unturned in this unimaginative movie
Since the Maze Runner lost the actual maze, it's become a very standard action franchise. It's almost a parody of the genre. I have never felt less invested in a bunch of protagonists who lurch from one predictable line of dialogue or piece of action to the next. All attempts at suspense are futile because we, the audience, just don't care.
The Alienist (2018)
Huge potential but tighter plot needed
I found myself very invested in the characters and setting. Amazing attention to detail capturing 1890s New York. Casting also spot on - I know some people have been sniffy about Luke Evans but thought he increasingly dominated the screen. The penultimate episode was gripping with a very upsetting climax. But too many plot points left underdeveloped and the final denouement wasn't all that. It would be very short sighted to dump The Alienist - I think it's a strong concept in a compelling setting but the plot needs to be much more worked out with a greater element of surprise. I warmed to The Alienist but it just needs that extra bit of oomph in the plot structure.
