3 Body Problem (2024– )

Meh
8 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I was actually excited about this show, I don't mind it's been transplanted to the UK and don't mind cultural diversity AT ALL. On the contrary, since they did transplant it to the UK, diversity actually makes sense and it is welcomed.

What I do mind was that no scientist does any science in the show or actually looks like someone who does science. They go to parties, take drugs, sleep around and talk about their love lives - don't get me wrong, I come from a relevant milieu myself and do realize that us "nerds" also have lives, but this isn't Friends, this is supposed to be a sci-fi apocalyptic story.

This whole thing is aggravated by the fact that characters are not well fleshed to begin with - we only get a general idea of the "type" of person each one is playing, which leaves small room for actually caring for them, not to mention loving them. Which is further aggravated by all the mediocre to sub-par acting.

But then comes Ye Wenjie and the whole China plot. With the exception of the struggle session which is only referred to in the Chinese version, the latter has mysteriously managed to portray Wenjie's suffering during the cultural revolution (due to being the daughter of a disgraced father) in a much more harrowing way. In the Netflix version, there's no ice, no polar temperatures, no isolation, everything looks brighter and she even has an affair, sex included! No starvation, no freezing, no beatings. It almost felt as if it was the Netflix version that went through censorship! Even the person that steals her discovery concerning the aliens is a fellow scientist, and not the Party commissar as should have been. Was the idea not to anger too much the Chinese? Because if it was, they should have watched the Chinese version first.

As for Ye Wenjie herself, what I can say. She is such a complicated character and all we see in the Netflix show is anger. And bitterness. Nothing more. I am afraid the scriptwriter never understood Ye Wenjie as a character, and that was the final blow to a show that is mediocre in so many other ways (cgi-still laughing about the way they portrayed the stars flickering, the uninspired ost, the settings ...) but could have been good if they had at least treated its soul, Ye Wenjie, correctly.

Trailer
4 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
There is only one reason I am giving this 9 stars and not 10, and that is the trailer. Judging by the trailer, this is a dark comedy that the viewer suspects may turn into a psychological thriller in the process. But it isn't really. I mean, there are some (VERY dark) comedic touches and Martha is a tortured soul that soon turns VERY menacing. However, the show isn't about a failed comedian and his psychopath stalker - it is about a sexual abuse victim that carries his trauma deep down buried inside him, said stalker only aggravating his anxiety and pain. It was well written, extremely well acted - it just felt to me that a hint about the abuse (harrowing scene...) should be in the trailer, so that people with their own trauma would not risk to be triggered.

The premise is very interesting, the execution so so
5 August 2023
Ooku: The Inner Chambers has a very interesting premise: Edo devastated by a plague targeting only men, that inevitably brings about a reversal of roles for men and women. So the shogun is now a woman, and she is served by a 3000 men strong harem (Ooku being the name of the building where the male concubines live).

I thought that it was pretty interesting for those who are familiar with the history of Japan (Edo era), but one never really relates to the characters, so... However, just to put things right regarding a 1 star review posted some days ago, implying that having 800 concubines were never the case in East Asia: the real Ooku was home to 3000 concubines at its peak, and don't even get me started with China. The Ming Emperor, for instance, had at some point 9000 concubines (many of whom he never, ever saw).

Good, yes Enjoyabke, no.
29 July 2023
This is objectively a very good, very interesting show with a great lead but I am afraid I wasn't able to enjoy it due to how stressful it was! Honestly, there's no relaxing for the viewer, the show is 100% tension like all the time! And to think that guy (Eli Cohen) really existed and really spent years as an undercover agent in Damascus... On a different note, how is it possible for other people writing 2 sentences long reviews while I must do at least 600 characters? I do get that longer reviews (however not 600 characters guys!) guarantee that the person is not hate-reviewing, but still, there are plenty hate-reviewers for this show too, writing silly but particularly brief stuff to justify their 1 star rating, how did they do it?

Upcoming (2021)
8/10
Sweet but painful
8 January 2023
Upcoming summer is a very sweet coming of age film that was marketed as a teen romance film in China and thus let many moviegoers down. This is definitely not a romance (nor could it ever be one) but the story of two young adults trying to be braver and better. And by the end, they manage to do exactly that, even if they have to suffer to get there.

Special congratulations to the two leads, they are both full of youth, full of wonder, a breath of fresh air; for 90 minutes they reminded me of how glorious it is to be that age and have your whole life in front of you. So watch this film but remember: no romance!

Unbalanced.
22 September 2022
Great premise, beautiful cinematography, terrific cast. Too bad the plot falls flat towards the end. And the last five minutes are just stupid. Too bad, because it started pretty strong. But then it just lost steam and eventually got ridiculous. To the point that I only gave it six stars and I am being extremely generous.

Now the big question is, why do we need to write six hundred characters to comment on imdb? I have read actual film reviews by real film critics that were shorter than that. I think three hundred words would have been just fine, without risking spoiling anything for people who reads it.

House of the Dragon (2022– )

Good enough
9 September 2022
Watching House of the Dragon is like eating your favourite food, only that it's from yesterday. It's not fresh, not original, but you still like it. So far it does not have the compelling characters of GoT had (I miss you, Lord Varys) with the possible exception of Daemon Targaryen, but overall the characters are good and the plot is intriguing enough. I just wish they had switched the casting for King Viserys ans Otto Hightower. And explained to the viewers who that Crabfeeder guy was and what he wanted! I am looking forward to watch how the plot will evolve, there is some nasty staff in the novel and incest is surprisingly not the worst of it. Let's see how they deal with it!

Really good so far
9 September 2022
I usually don't post my opinion on a show before it is completed, but Rings of Power seems to be getting a lot of unmerited hate for reasons unclear. Some claim it's because it diverges from JRR Tolkien's work (as did Peter Jackson's trilogies, to be fair), others because they are "not satisfied" with the plot (just 2 episodes in), and of course there are those who cannot stand watching a woman be a warrior without being sexualized or a Black elf. So, 2 episodes in, my take is that the show has done an excellent work so far in introducing us to its world, the characters are pretty interesting, the plot is intriguing (Galandriel's quest to unearth and defeat Sauron, his evil secretly expanding in the Middle Earth), the acting is overall satisfying and the visuals are pretty amazing. My review may of course change in the course of the season, but for now, if you are a fantasy lover, not a blinded purist and you can deal with strong female characters and the occasional PoC in the cast, go for it.

The Sandman (2022– )

A mediocre start, an amazing ending.
28 August 2022
I have not read the comic book series, so obviously I have no learned opinion on its adaptation, but watching the show made me suppose that on paper the Sandman has a lot of different adventures, with no real connection between them. As a result, the show was unequal. And the acting too. It starts ok, the acting is (overall) good, so one keeps watching. Then episode 6 comes, with a combination of two beautiful stories (Death and the man that didn't die), and I felt for the first time that yes, this is a show I like. But then we get 3 episodes of the vortex story which in itself is not bad, but the acting in it was excruciatingly bad, it was hard to watch. I almost dropped the show then and there. And then, the last episode dropped, and I was hooked again! If you are considering dropping the show out of despair on how the people acting as Rose Walker, Lyta or Desire play, hold on and you will be rewarded.

Mediocre.
17 August 2022
This started in an unexpectedly sympathetic way (despite the stereotypes and the awful singing) but halfway through it the female lead gets particularly selfish and egocentric, this ruined it for me.

Fleabag meets Bridgerton...
21 July 2022
...and it isn't that bad. I even thought Dakota Johnson was lovely, even if she was Elisabeth Bennet, not Anne Elliott. The film's major drawback is Captain Wentworth - not an ounce of charisma, not a trace of chemistry with Dakota Jonhson. Someone that hasn't read the novel would very understandably ship Anne with Mr. Elliott instead.

Dropped
7 June 2022
20 minutes in the first episode, it is clear that this is a show about the Middle Ages seen as scenery for (bad) historical romance fiction. The actors literally look like mediocre cosplayers and the script and dialogue do not have anything to do with 15th century England. I'm only giving this a second star just in case this gets any better later on - but I won't stick around to watch it.

Not an objective review

I watched Corazon Salvaje as a romantic teenager and absolutely loved it. I can't tell if I would still love it now, but at least its premise is certain to get to any romantic hearts out there.

There is something really wrong about this show
7 May 2022
And that is that there's apparently a second season. Which means lots of opportunities to f. It up. I hope the second season will be decent - and conclude the show. It is too good to be butchered in season 2, 3 etc.

Special kudos to all the actors, my favourites being John Turturro (obviously) , Britt Lower (first time I have watched her and she's a queen) and of course Adam Scott. Just his "transition" scenes in the elevator should get him all the awards there are.

Surprisingly good.
23 April 2022
If you don't mind the nationalistic vibe, Reset is a pretty good show that manages to keep the viewer intrigued for all its 15 episodes, even on that plot (time loop, basically). Acting was great by all cast, particularly the bus passengers. Some of their stories were really moving and maybe give the western viewer a glimpse on life + mentality in modern China.

The show has its flaws, but in general it is highly entertaining and the leading couple is adorable. I got to give it to the Koreans, they surely master the zombie genre.

Good watch
23 April 2022
This is a good show, particularly interesting for non-American viewers, who don't really know much about the Mayflower colony. I think it would have been better if it was a little bit longer or if it chose its pov more decisively. This could be primarily William Bradford's story, or Squanto's story, or Stephen Hopkins 's story or -why not indeed- Mrs Hopkins' story, its running time was too short to be everyone's (and noone's) story.

Good enough
26 February 2022
This is a good enough film bases on a good novel. Could have been better. For instance, who's idea was to cast that actor for the role of Hitler? No disrespect for the guy, but he doesn't look AT ALL like Hitler, and is also a little bit too old for a 48 year old guy (Hitler's age at Munich). However both leads (meaning the 2 young men) are really good.

Pretty mediocre
25 December 2021
I liked how the lead actor is not your typical romantic film lead and that we get to see that he's a pretty decent guy and that that is what matters. So, nice idea, mediocre execution.

Also, I don't really get how they managed to cast a Japanese actor to play the father of a Chinese one. I really liked the dad but it still feels kind of weird to anyone that can tell the difference. I don't get how a film about Asian Americans, starring Asian Americans adopts the 'they all look the same to me" approach.

This is really worth it
2 October 2021
If you are wondering if this show is worth of all the hype, it is.

Just a few flaws for me: the cop sub plot feels silly; and as usually in korean dramas, when they need white characters (the VIPs here - by the way, could you imagine a US show were all the villains would be POC?) they cast the same bunch of untalented dudes. Their acting is so bad that i really wonder if they are truly actors or if there are just white dudes livng in Korea.

Solid watch
2 October 2021
A bunch of people here are dissing the film because the Danish original was apparently better. Well, this is a film that involves a plot twist. A plot twist can never work a second time. So, those of you who have watched the original, what did you expect? For those who have not watched the Danish original, The Guilty is a good watch.

Would have been a complete flop without its male lead
23 April 2021
This show is rather poorly written, only adequately directed and quite badly acted by a bunch of young people mostly casted because of their looks. The female lead is also insipid - maybe it's the part or the director, because I've seen IU in other shows and she was good. Quite honestly, the show's only redeeming quality is its male lead, who really manages to mesmerize the audience to the point that some of them even graded the show with 10/10. Otherwise, a show full of plot holes where the colourless female lead only pays attention to the male lead in the last episodes after spending almost the whole show pining over his self righteous brother would have never been classified as "epic romance". So, congratulations to Mr. Lee JunKi, I guess.

Fun
18 April 2021
So it seems that the show kind of let down the manga fans who complain about the adaptation. Well, who cares.

This was a fun, bingeworthy show with an excellent ensemble cast and more character development than in 30 episodes series. You just need a manga lens to get used to the silliness of some of the monsters, but as the show progresses we get less of that and more of human interactions.

Still, a potential viewer must be warned that there's no explanation why that plague has befallen Seoul (and probably the world), there's no clear ending and probably no season 2. Just so you know.

Had it's issues, but I enjoyed it.
18 April 2021
I am amazed at how many people give a 10/10 grade after watching just 1-2 episodes (please don't do that) or a 1 or 2/10 complaining about cringeworthy acting and bad dialogues when they've watched subbed versions (noone's expected to understand japanese, but can you not read subtitles??) In truth, at least for someone who hasn't read the manga, it is an interesting show with an exciting premise that falls kind if flat after our leads get to that beach. It does have a few characters that scream "manga" like the annoying Cheshire cat guy or, worse, the tattooed freak, but even with those the show remains entertaining and watchable to the end, even if it loses its grip plot-wise. Season 2 will be a challenge for the scriptwriters, but personally I will give it a go.
