Selling Tampa (2021)
Fails at everything it tries to be.
Tries to be aware about racial and gender issues, yet consistently objectivies everybody. Every time a house is visited there seems to be a need to talk about relationships. Vapid stupid nonsense. Some of the houses look really nice though they never spend time actually showing them. Really feels like a copycat of selling sunset, but somehow manages to have even less information about real eastate shown in it.
Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired (2008)
A fairly unbiased documentary
I know a lot of people call this pro polanski. But lets remember that even the accuser agreed with the narritive in the docu: mainly the judge was a complete idiot only trying to be in the spotlight. Do i think polanski should have been punished harsher? Yes. But with the way this judge tackled the case that was impossible.
Ojing-eo geim (2021)
I dont get the hype
This korean series is okay. It has pretty nice set designs and good cinematography. However the acting could definitely be stronger. The music is often pretty good, although some choices I personally found kinda odd. The story itself is nothing special and has been told in better and different ways.
Floor Is Lava (2020)
the set is to small, and there is no reason they go through it as a team.
I think having the same contestents throughout each episode could make it a lot more fun, with time being a more important factor.
Sex, Explained (2020)
Boring
Very little new information, with a very stale presentation. There was a lot more potential for this docu series but they chose to focus on the moet boring things with way to little debt. Other shows (like the dutch show spuiten en slikken) have done what this show attempted to do in a way more interesting way.
With regard to the presentation: very monotone voice delivery, boring way to tackle the subject and a real lack of interesting direction choices. Honestly felt like a collection of highschool presentations.
Selling Sunset (2019)
The drama sets this show far back
I wished they would just have capable people walking you through how these multi million dollar homes are build and sold. I would be very interested in it, if it would have shown more of the houses, and more of the work that goes into building these houses. Unfortunately it just wants to be a vessel for drama
Tenet (2020)
Great action and stunts, but overall dissapointing
Yesterday I saw Tenet, and after seeing it, I was fairly dissapointed. Nolan has build a reputation of making great movies, that revolve around a big scale of events, which Tenet delivers on. The action scenes and the special effects are amazing. I especially want to give a shoutout to the fight choreography, who invented the backwards fighting. This gave the movie a very unique feel.
Unfortuantely the soundmixing was not all that great. The fight sequences were extremely loud, while the audio was a normal volume. From other reviews I heard a lot of people had issues with this mixing, where some theaters played everything really loud, while some had unhearable dialogue. This mixing made me dread going into the next action sequence, knowing how loud every part of it would be.
The pacing of the movie also felt very rushed. Earlier on in development there were rumors that Tenet would be 3 hours long. It is possible that this was indeed the case and that the original 3 hour movie was paced a lot better. Unfortunately I can't judge that movie, only the one I have seen. Especially the first 30 minutes felt very rushed, where it felt we were hopping from country to country. Some more time to let us breath in the beginning, and to let us know our protaganist would have served the movie well.
In the movie we never really get to see our characters. They constantly do stuff, but the actions that happen have sometimes more then a week of time in between them. It would have been nice to have them interact in some way, or emote over what was going on. I really missed a bonding between characters. The most we get of that is the last scene of the movie, which is like getting appatiser after dinner. I also found the female lead to be quite annoying. Her only motivation was constantly talking about her son. Even hearing people say that the world was gonna end she awnsered by saying; "does that mean my son will die as well?"... This really isn't characterising her, but just using her son as a prop trying to convince us she is like us. Dont we all love our families?
These issues really lowered the quality of the movie for me, but the technical aspects are still verry good. The acting was solid and the music was pretty good. There were some minor plot holes/goofs, which didn't affect me from enjoying the movie. The cinematogrophy was pleasant to watch. Overall I would give tenet a solid 6. It's a good action movie, but the issues mentioned above hinder it for me from being anything more then that.
Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things (2015)
I guess you would be in a coma if you drink every time they talk about giving hugs
This documentary feels very cluttered. It has a message but, has no idea how to convey it. This makes it very drawn out, which in term makes it very boring to me. The message behind the documentary, to look at the things we have in our life, and evaluate if it has meaning is an important one. However, the documentary didn't apply this philosophy to itself. I am not here to learn about these guys being huggers, or to see them going around the country. I am here to find out about minimalism. The documentary talks about it, but it is filled with all this other stuff I don't need. Much like the message of the documentary itself, I turned it off for this reason.
History 101 (2020)
Bias fueled garbage
Sure the graphics are decent, but apart from that this show makes a point of going through subjects with an heavily biased outlook. I do not necessarily mind the fact that they clearly have an opinion on the subjects they talk about, the problem is that they do not cover the opinions of the opposite side, nor do they show the basis for their opinions. Some "facts" they name in this series, aren't facts at all and are blatently false and/or misleading. To be completely honest, you can probably find something better on youtube, if you want to go in dept on these issues.
House of Cards (2013)
Strong start but leaves you ultimately unsatisfied
The first two season of house of cards are absolutely great. Spacey gives a great performance as frank underwood, a politician willing to do anything to get more power. However after these first two seasons the qualities starts to slowly drop. Claire is a prime example of a character that seems to lose her sanity through the series. She becomes more and more impulsive. A logical plot seems harder to be found.
I would still absolutely recommend this shows first season. Even season 3-5 have still some interesting things to often. It is just not on the same level as season 1-2.
You vs. Wild (2019)
A weak atempt for an interactive show
I stopped after the second episode since I couldn't take it seriously anymore. It is all so obviously staged. In the beginning of the second episode you have to decide wether or not to use a rope based elevator across a canyon. He keeps talking about it being really old but all i can see is a brand new rope that has just been tied up there hanging there. That is just really lazy filmmaking.
Also the way in which the entire thing is shot is very offputting. Seeing things fall down only to be shot from down there makes it clear that there are people standing down there filming. It just takes you out of the moment because it once again shows how staged it is.
Then you have the edditing and god is it annoying. Shot never seem to last for very long and we constantly get to many angles. I would have like it a lot more would they have just filmed it only from that guys perspective.
