The Fall of the House of Usher (2023)
Mike Flanagan scores again.
Bloody hell this is a damn good show.
I won't put any spoilers here. I'm only writing a short blurb as a fan of all his work.
These actors are just so good. I actually love his reoccuring stars. This show might seem like it takes on a story that's been done many times before. But this is a twist, a blend of genres, with great style, great writing and as always great and memorable lines and scenes. I have to say during the first two episodes I was reminded of the kardashians aswell as the brutality of the world. Of the Hunger of people, the "never enough I need more" the shallowness, wants becoming need and getting lost in greed.
But these characters are not two dimensional, the story is not one of shallowness.
Mikes work always goes deep into exposing the vulnerabilities and complexities of interpersonal relationships, the rawness of human desire and insecurities.
It's not just plain old horror with jump scares.
There's meaning to his work. Or its just good entertainment to put it simply.
Great execution of all production sides, I love the distinct style he has for his characters. I can't help but love Rahul kholi in everything he does aswell as kate siegal. They both really nailed these roles. I can't help but feel like we all know or have seen some form of these characters, we've seen them online, content creators, actors or people that are famous for just being famous.
Really I think the ridiculousness of these characters make this painted against a back drop of tragedy, mystery and horror . And watching this I just felt like I hope he keeps making series, that he publishes books, makes films and just keeps creating. Made me want to watch hill house and bly manor. Don't get me wrong I don't think anything will be as good as those for me. Bly manor my favourite. But I hope we see more of these anthologies from him.
Overall a great watch for Netflix in amongst lot of the usual mediocre releases. Not just a typical horror.
Virgin River (2019)
This is a perfect comfort show
This is the kind of show you watch to feel comfort and a sense of community.
Many bad reviews about it being boring and predictable. It's a slow burn soap opera essentially. Nothing big happens, it's not fast paced high drama, high stakes or anything like that.
It's a small town story that's really about community, friendship, support and comforting relationships. It's not the kind of show you watch that blows you away and leaves you at the edge of your seat. It's the kind of show you watch that feels like a hug.
A nurse moves to a small town after having gone through alot of trauma in her life. Looking for a fresh start.
The show is about the characters and their lives and how they're all intertwined, about the community she finds there and the ups and downs along the way.
Like many say its like heart of dixie feel to it.
It's really the kind of show when you just want to cuddle up with a cup of tea and sit back with a low stress, good feel show.
It was exactly what I was looking for when going through a difficult time.
Would recommend to anyone who liked this is us, the fosters and shows that make you see a good side of humanity and pull on your heart strings at times. Obviously different story to the shows I mentioned but the same kind of feel. About relationships, friendships, the hard times in life and getting through it with people you care about.
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (2023)
YOU AND ME
This had me crying.
I can honestly say this may be just as good as the original.
Don't worry about any negative reviews, this love story, this story of friendship, loyalty and unconditional love is really wonderful.
The acting is very well done.
I prefer this history of the king and queen of England much more than our own here irl.
I love that we had both present and past elements.
I wish I could find a love like George found.
If only we had a queen such as queen Charlotte.
I know this a controversial opinion. And the show isn't at all meant to be anything to do with our monarchy now. But I do prefer it I'm sorry.
And I think our young actors of the show did brilliantly.
Whatever anyone wants to say negatively about the script, one thing it can't be compared to the original brigerton that's why it's a spin off, it's a story about about the Queen and her and George's love, and of the main ladies of the Ton when they were younger. We can really see now why they are the way they are.
This is a love story and a story of friendship and a love that knows no bounds. We rarely see a successful TV or film that's a love story that isn't cringey and is sincere. This TV show is that. Nothing is perfect, no one is perfect. People have problems, and secrets and pain. People endure, all people. And we can love one another in spite of and because of just the same.
You People (2023)
TERRIBLE FILM
I never review or rate stuff this low but this film enraged me and the commentary was bad. The premise could be good but it was literally Jews vs Black ppl and it did nothing to bring them together. Comparing the holocaust to slavery. Treating the other culture and history with disrespect on both sides and in general did nothing to push the points and underlying of the film and was a disaster. These actors are worth more than this. And the commentary between the two where not well done. The point and the sea of the film was hugely missed by cringe writing. I have fast forward through so many parts of it. I wanted this film to be good cause it has a great cast and I thought the film was going to say something and mean something but ultimately she finished where it began.
That '90s Show (2023)
I know ppl will hate on it but.....
Yeah it's corny but honestly, it's still pretty fun.
Ofc it's not going to be as good as the classic but it is still pretty decent. The OG characters make appearances. It's all round a fun, the new kids are likeable the grand parents are still funny as ever. Takes a little while to warm up to the new cast.
And it's going to be viewed as a miss by alot of people I already know because that 70s show can never be beaten. But as 90s kid this does ring true to me and it is an easy watch.
Not near as good as the original but I do hope people give it a chance.
My hope is younger generation watch this and like it then get introduced to the 70s show.
It makes me miss the old gang.
I appreciate this sequel/spinoff.
The Watcher (2022)
WHAT A WASTE
Great potential all the way through. Near otstanding performances from the cast.
I don't know how it went so wrong in the end. If they where trying to end it with the same tune as the real life story I don't know.
It was equally unsatisfying and there was no need to end it the way it did. Not with how many leads it set up and twists and turns truly dissapointing.
One of those shows that keeps you guessing and right when you think you know it throws you a different way.
Only this show ended up throwing us no way at all.
Why waste such good material and good actors with such a poor ending.
I very rarely give bad feedback over a show or film or even write any reviews but tho one just had to be said.
It was a total waste of time a waste of a good cast and a waste of what could of been a great story.
The Imperfects (2022)
MARVEL AND DCS FANS WILL LOVE
The bad reviews are ridiculous tbh,
After the first episode this show really takes off.
It is great casting considering and representation of inclusion in a way we haven't seen before for the LGBTQIA* community. Aswell as BIPOC inclusivity.
The show feels like it is based off of a comic it is that good. The progression in the main three characters with their powers are interesting. There are multiple antagonists in the show too.
Trust me when I say the entire show is much better than the first episode. From episode 2 everything gets better and better each episode. I like that this show isn't white washed with all white protags honouring the heritages of the so called "monsters"
The underlying themes are also great and surprisingly wholesome layered underneath dark themes.
This is if marvels "new mutants" was done right.
Give this show ago if you are a marvel and DC fan.
"No monster left behind" 💛
Daybreak (2019)
Shoulda been renewed
Honestly gutted this wasn't renewed aye. Pretty fun take on the zombie apocalypse. Kinda like Znation but hunger games a bit. Quite funny aswell. Never knew why they didn't renew it.
La casa de papel (2017)
It's a family tradition
What can I say about this show other than it's the best show to ever come out of Netflix. The heist of all heist the master plans of all plans. Amazing writing acting directing just everything. Just when you think you know what's going on , what will happen the professor will 180 snd have you constantly at the edge of your seats. The misfits finding family and overcoming the greatest of all grears. This show is one that will have us all believing anything is possible.
Bruised (2020)
Very well done film
This is a very well crafted film, the steady cam, harsh cuts and long sequences with minimal lines at times which are very moving. The way Halle berry brought to life this character you can tell took months of prep and crafting and she really threw herself entirely into this film. If you are a movie buff. Who appreciates film festival styled cinematography, and intense dramas you will enjoy this. Astounding acting and very executed. Not sure about the bad reviews but I think the style is not to everyone's taste as it may feel slow to some. But feels very real. Definitely worth a watch. Good standards for a Netflix original film. Update - love to see black queer representation.
The Morning Show (2019)
Some of the BEST work from Jennifer and Reese
Such a highly tense show, some of the best work I've seen from Jennifer and Reese. I love the dynamic the drama and the story line of news anchors going head to head on popular, relevant topics of our time. Incredibly moving and important show. Will have u on the edge of ur seat.
A must watch you will not be dissapointed.
The Great (2020)
A must watch
Excellent performances by Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. Such a stunner cast, many think it too vulgar and derogatory but it is wildly amusing and entertaining, similar to bridgerton but with the political focused core to the story. Those who are displeased because it's inaccurate, the show never claims at any point to be an accurate story of Catherine the great. But I somehow feel she would of loved this story. Very clever script, heart felt, funny and addictive to watch. Hope it is renewed for season three.
Gentefied (2020)
Love this show
Love this show for real. Hope there's a third season. If u liked the Netflix special on my block and Spanish comedy you'll like this, also nice to see some queer representation for poc women.
It's heart felt aswell. Easy to binge in a day. Love seeing gay and trans characters good to see people like me on screen finally. Truly a good show.
Yellowjackets (2021)
GREAT
Can't wait for more eps, ep 1 was so good. Can't wait to see how it all happened. Ignore bad reviews definitely watch this, lord the flies but twisted and ruthless. Interesting and great casting.
The King of Staten Island (2020)
Pete Davidson's everything
This movie is really really good and has me respecting and loving Pete Davidson. Funny but serious, coming of age true story. He did a great job creating this and pulling the role off.
Fairfax (2021)
Ignore low reviews, it's cool.
Not sure why other reviews are hating this so much. Ive seen many diff adult animations, we all have our own tastes I guess but this is very chill, easy to view and is ironic. Literally takes mainstream and clout to the extreme, it had me chuckling in some parts for sure. Visually this is great, Chernobyl festival ep is the best by far. Very ironic and over dramatic. Good VAs. Isn't super intense. If u like bobs burgers and that kinda vibe you'll like this so give it a go and don't write it off completely due to low reviews. This isn't the kinda show to be compared to Rick and Morty. It's over dramatic, ironic yet has an enjoyable nativity to it held by the main characters outlook and character.
